Hi all, it’s been one year since I repotted some seedings into semi hydro - and one full year since I’ve started adopting this grow system. In today’s video I’ll share how these orchids are doing and discuss and show you how the repot went a year ago and some pros and cons to using a semi hydroponic system to grow your orchids.
IG @nicoledeannaorchids
Growing Conditions & Climate:
Almost all orchids grown indoors
Eastern Exposures (4-5 hours direct early morning sun) & LED Grow Lights
- Most orchids grow under the lights
- Only cool growers & orchids in bloom grow under my Eastern facing windows
- Grow space doesn’t get any additional sunlight other than the LED’s
Zone 7a - Humid Subtropical
Products I use are linked below. Disclaimer I may earn a small commission on any of the Amazon Links that you use. Thanks for your support!

I love update videos where we see video footage of the before, and of the after. And if you have a pic of your plant in bloom, it helps to put a pic beside (if it has bloomed before). This is probably maximum work but you asked what kind of videos we like!

So I am not the only one who "ignores" newbies sometimes??? Minimum care until I can address.....I too have learned my lesson and take care of them right away. Pretty good progress ... even the den that is not growing roots that quickly. I think it will pick up once you get the spider mites under control on that baby...

I hope so! She's so frustrating, and with a name of lemon pink x Hollywood, the blooms should be stunning. Let's see what happens! Thanks for watching ❤️

I had a chance to look at George King, and i loved it. So when I found it available at my supplier, I jumped on it. One is of course mine. 👍 it is still seedlings though… nice updates! I should do this kind more often but always loose track which ones are which… 😅

I end up having up my videos to a hard drive so I could do these updates and do before and after over time. I personally enjoyed seeing progress videos, so I tried to save the old footage. I'd love to see yours! Will be catching up on videos this weekend ☺️

I have the first dendrobium cross that you showed, haven't had mine real long and it's a bit smaller , but I can't wait to see the flowers whenever it does bloom, it sounds like it will be really different 🌞💚

I think it'll be a nice one too! Hopefully it blooms in the next year. I'm amazed at the speed in which it's growing 💗 I enjoyed the mystery crosses from the Amazon vendor angels orchids, they've sent nice ones.

That would be amazing! If the Dendrobium could do it I'd be over the moon! The cattleya will need several more years, but we shall see ☺️ thanks so much for watching!

Hi Nicole, what I see are plants that have progressed surprisingly well considering the short time you have had them. Seeing your success I am thinking about trying s/h for one or two orchids. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

Thanks so much for watching Andre! I find S/H can work well. It's a bit more work with the transition, but you don't have to repot as much and don't need to water as frequently either. If you take the plunge let me know ☺️

Hi Nicole! Do you have any videos regarding how to water the LECA setup with these self watering pots versus the moss/bark setup? I keep killing my Miltonia/Miltoniopsis orchids because I can't keep up with watering. I'm thinking about switching to self-watering system but am confused if you always keep the reservoir full with those. Thanks!!
@NicoleDeanna
@NicoleDeanna 2 года назад
I have a general how I water my orchids video, but it's not specific to the self watering pots. I'll say it's an "always moist" system, so you do need to keep water in the reservoir. Weekly I add water so that the reservoir doesn't empty out. Miltonias and miltoniopsis are especially thirsty so I'd be sure to monitor to make sure that reservoir doesn't get empty. I hope this helps :)

The George King x Waianae Starburst, curious what size that needs to be to bloom. George King is a pretty large unifoliate, Waianae is a bit smaller. Having grown on a George King from that size, it took 4 years to develop the first sheath, which was blind. I am hoping the sheath produced this year will bloom. (I have the big, blooming size one but I thought it would be interesting to grow one on from seedling)
@NicoleDeanna

Thanks for sharing your experience on that one! I look forward to getting it to bloom one day. I expected at minimum 2 more years, but 3-4 wouldn't surprise me either. I find growing from seedling so rewarding. From that vendor on Amazon (angels orchids) 2 seedlings from the plug have bloomed already the Miltonia Kismet Kind Kai and the Sharry Baby Red Fantasy. It's amazing how quickly oncidium hybrids grow compared to some of the others.

Great video- thanks. Do you keep less water in reservoir during their winter period? Am keen to pot my dends in similar set up. Thanks
@NicoleDeanna
@NicoleDeanna Год назад
I keep the water reservoir about the same because the roots adapt in semi hydro thanks for watching!

Cattleya in leca- roots stay moist. Everything says they have to dry between watering. Newbie confused.
@NicoleDeanna
@NicoleDeanna 7 дней назад
The roots need to adapt to it, so the old ones die off and the new ones adapt to the always moist system. With that said, the roots adapt, but I've learned that this system isn't the best in my environment and I've moved away from it :)
