Using Sequence when Composing Music - Music Composition

How to use sequence as a compositional tool to expand a musical idea. This music composition begins with a simple four note idea. It then shows you how to build these four notes into a 16 bar piece using melodic and harmonic sequence. The video also shows how to decorate the essential sequential idea, when to break from the sequence, and when to reinstate it. Useful for those wanting to understand how sequences work, and to composers wanting to use sequences in their writing.

So I'm watching this again after 7 months. I've been playing piano for two years and discovered your channel early on. I was never intimidated even though I had no idea what you were talking about. But you opened up the world of music theory and that has helped me tremendously. I don't watch Rick Beato yet for his music theory classes, since he cannot teach simple ideas. As soon as I have my post-Doctorat degree, I'll try him out again. Until then, I'll stick with your channel. I'm still frustrated that my keyboard technique hasn't caught up to my theoretical skill level, but it is inspiring. I'm always interested in reading your comments section, since it is one of the most polite and informative groups on the Tubes. That is thanks to the work that Alex and you have done. Many heavy metal band members watch and learn from your channel. That is a testament to the power of music. Merci beaucoup.

Enjoyed this - I know it was not your intention but as you developed the musical idea I started subconsciously inventing little phrases in my head that might or might not have worked but more importantly, I had a very strong longing/feeling for the final resolution, not only that but I could hear the final Am chord long before you got there, for me a watershed moment. Thank you. Steve

Merci Gareth. Was this a falling fifth sequence? I just watched a college professor who just to happened to talk about sequences and he discussed this idea. The funny thing was he showed several examples including one by Bach. And he talked about Roman Numeral analysis of Bach and said there were some things that he couldn't describe with Roman Numerals and left it at that. I'm always impressed by your knowledge of the Rule of the Octave since I think you can't analyze Bach without an understanding of this concept. Could have done. I was trying to demonstrate it in one style.

Hi Gareth , I sequence everything- even short cadential formula ( modal) to give a road map of direction for a piece beforehand. I do however think in terms of pitch collections, where anything is possible, before moving on to the next group etc . The magic happens when making meaningful phrases - all obvious underlying sequential form is hidden but yet coherence and direction is maintained. Interesting topic ….. was Bach a serialist ? Thanks Gareth

Glad it’s helpful. Bach wasn’t a serialist but he certainly used motifs and sequences.

A greek song of the great composer Mikys Theodorakis start in the same way. The song called "Νύχτα Μαγικια" ( magic night). Is in different key but is the same way that the chords connect at the first two measures.

The basic principles are fine. However, in what we're labeling a sequence, we're moving from F to Bdim, which isn't ideal seeing as it's just a diminished fifth. Doing that already breaks the sequence of moving by descending perfect fifths. F -> Bdim is pretty ugly. But I guess using neapolitan would have been too advanced for the target audience. The other thing is that, this melody happens to fit into a sequence of descending perfect fifths. Others might not. So "just lower each scale degree by 1" might not work every time. It just works for this.

The great thing is that you have so many options.

In the 6th measure, I would have introduced an F# in the bass which would have led to G# in the 7th measure. This would have helped you break the sequence in order to arrive at the dominant E major in a more refreshing manner.

That’s certainly another possibility
