2 Great Tips For The Perfect Fretting hand Technique: bit.ly/2fObecJ
Check out my full technique course here: bit.ly/2vFGJeq
Last week I released a lesson showing you one of my favourite ever exercises to get your solo lines really up to speed.
It was the exact exercise I used when changing my entire technique many years ago to facilitate more up tempo style playing. Before hand, I really struggled to get my faster solo type lines to sound clean and controlled, but that exercise helped me focus in on exactly what I needed to change to get my bass playing to the next level.
Since the release of that lesson I've had a flurry of emails all asking the same question... "Scott, what happens if the lines aren't linear? What happens if it's more like an arpeggio type run?"
Well, the good news is that you can apply the exact same exercise to non-linear lines too!
In this lesson I'm going to show you how you can apply these "speed-bursts" to arpeggios and more angular type lines and runs.
As always, see you in the shed...
Scott :)

I know this is a few years late, but one teacher taught me a really great way of practicing complex and tricky parts is to actually start at the end of the phrase and add stuff to the beginning. It's been great for my playing, but the idea is that in performance, you always start at the beginning of the phrase, which means that it always gets good at the beginning, but as you get closer to the end it gets weaker. So the idea is let the beginning be weaker when you're practicing because when you get to a point where you can play the whole phrase end to end, you'll be starting at the beginning anyway and it'll naturally get stronger every time you play it. Anyway, just food for thought.

Not a new exercise, but shown in a very good and understandable way. Usually the guy is just like "Practice and eventually go faster", and here we got a great theory piece on why fails happen.

Great exercise, Scott, as usual! And thanks especially for pointing out the moving thumb technique. This was holding back my articulation in the right hand, and not just on fast parts. Moving my thumb as you describe is giving me that extra 15% accuracy and solidity that can make the difference in locking in hard. It's part of my normal scales practice these days, too.

Thanks from Los Angeles, Scott! I'm going to start bringing the "moving thumb" technique you mentioned into my playing. You're the best!

Connect your speed bursts. For me it's the plucking string shift. A long sequence incorporates some shifts I can do fast and some I can do slower. But I understand this valuable speed lessons. I could practice note 4-5-6 if I don't have a technique for that. Again a job for cortex. I use it quite a lot now since you brought it up a while back, developing a bass brain. Bass love? That's a new concept to me, I can't even imagine what it means. I gave it a thumb though, a bass like. I listen to The Voice UK band. No flaws during the series. Why are you not in it? Would be cool if you showed some of the songs. How about Four Tops, I'll be there and see what the bass guy is actually doing.

Between this lesson and the previous one with the scales, I'm really getting a better idea of how to diagnose the problems with my plucking and fretting. I'm not sure once I find the specific issues how to treat the symptoms, though. I guess that's a problem for down the road, though.

Hi Scott, Can you tell me why you play the 9th 11th 13th instead of repeating the arpeggio again. Would you do this with a minor arpeggio as well? Are you just playing the missing notes of a major or minor scale? Being a major arpeggio is the 1st 3rd 5th 7th. So after you play in higher register the 2nd (9th) 4th (11th) and 6th (13th) I have never seen anyone teaching on u tube do this before when talking about playing arpeggios

@yogran1
@yogran1 9 лет назад
Hey Scott, I seem to be playing pretty fine with my thumb anchored on the top string as it serves as a pivot otherwise my hand tends to fly around but I can play at faster tempos doing this, would I still need to change my technique? Will there be other problems that would surface later if I continued this way?

When I try to practise this exercise, I have always some slowness to hammer on my ring finger on fretboard unless I remove my other fingers from the fretboard. My fingers are a little shorter than Scott's. What should I do?

hey scott, which one is better ? two or three finger plucking?
@numberneinlarge9965
@numberneinlarge9965 7 лет назад
Candra Vertius Depends on your style of playing, I guess. I personally use 2 fingers for most things, and I'll use 3 if I want to do a Les Claypool style groove(I'll do a slide leading into the note, while using 2 fingers for the slide, and the 3rd for the actual note).
@Not_Lewis
@Not_Lewis 7 лет назад
I use 3 fingers personally. I could argue for both techniques though. If I'm playing around on multiple strings, I like that extra finger to be handy if I want to snag a note on a different ascending string in quick succession, but I've noticed that shifting from high to low is easier with two fingers, for example if i'm playing a descending major scale in 3rds, its easier to play with 2 fingers as the action from descending to the next string below is somewhat easier.

I totally don't understand... You say that you play arpeggio of Cmaj, but just first four notes are from there... What are there doing those D, F# and A notes??? F# is not even in Cmaj scale... Don't you play Cmaj arpeggio and then D arpeggio?
