This video covers the basics which my students need to learn in order to use tape as a resist on their raku pots- or other glazes on non-raku which they made in my Ceramics classes. This video, although specific to my classroom, does have aspects which extend beyond my classroom. The glazes used in the video are Coyote White, Cobalt, and Violet

I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 29 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/s...
I started my RU-vid channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!
Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!

Thank you for another great video. Question: if i use electrical tape as a stencil for underglazes, will the adhesive be an issue later when I remove the tape and apply clear glaze over the entire piece? Thanks again, Karan!

I have not noticed the adhesive being an issue, however I would recommend with underglazes perhaps bisque firing them prior to clear glazing to prevent smearing!

@@KaransPotsAndGlass One more question, please: since I’ve already bisque fired my wares, I’ll need to do another bisque firing after the underglazing, correct? So, what firing schedule would you recommend? I’m thinking it can be a short bisque schedule this time since I’ve applied the underglazes to bisque. My clay body is cone 6 (I have never double-bisque fired anything). By the way, the electric tape worked wonderfully...nice, crisp lines. Thank you.

Yes, I would just do a short bisque for underglaze! :)

If you use tape on top of glaze, do you find that it pulls the glaze off when you remove the tape?

I don’t have issues with that happening- I’m not sure if that is more a characteristic of a particular glaze or not. I have a couple of glazes that are more delicate to be touched that I wouldn’t bother trying that technique with as I’d be concerned it may pull it up. Oh, and DO make sure the first glaze is dry before trying it!
