Thanks to patreon Soti C. for calling out the file path difference between Mac and Windows in 09:30! The themes I used in this video were Sanctum (light mode) at 0:53 and Things (dark mode) at 14:10. :)
I had this plugin installed for months and months but never really understood what was its value and usage. Your video made it clear and now I am using QuickAdd "capture" for my daily log. Thanks! Your videos are very clear and just about right (speed, technical details, usage patterns...).
I have watched many people sharing their knowledge and views regarding the PKM strategy, particularly around the Obsidian. But Nicole always stands out of them all. She creates very high-quality content and also shares it selflessly. I always follow her advice and have often found it helpful in some way. I can't appreciate her contributions enough. Thanks a lot, Nicole (alias NVDH 😊)!
I only just watched this video now. Oh my hat, this has changed my workflows! Thank you for creating this video. The Template option alone saves me so much time with my most common notes.
Nicole, you have saved 100s of hours with these vids. i am grateful. really appreciate your thoroughness and dedication! You should release a comprehensive course packaged for Obsidian beginners from step 0.
How is it like, every week, I go... "Man I wonder if there is a way I could do *this*" followed by a new Nicole video EXPLAINING THAT VERY THING? From the bottom of my GM heart, thank you.
I've just remapped cmd+n to add new note with template. I do see the value of adding a note with a formatted name. Adding notes directly within a folder is cool, however auto note mover takes care of this function too). Capture is cool!
Hi Nicole, I just watched the video and saw that you blurred out the "on deck" at 13:05 but at 13:36 is not blurred out :) Keep on posting these videos. I learn a lot from them and I am really grateful for it. Cheers
Hey, thanks for noticing! I had initially blurred it out because I mentioned a video with a developer (Zsolt) but hadn't actually asked him yet, at that point. Well, I've asked him now, so I wanted to remove the blur and accidentally left one in! Oops! Thanks for pointing it out though, that would have been useful in another situation! :) I appreciate it!
Happy you like it, and that it's gotten you excited about what you could do with it! It's definitely one of those plugins that are best when adapted to your specific use case.
I think I've found a use for the MULTI option. With this option you can create a folder for other quick-add commands so you can group them. For example, if you have many TEMPLATE commands and some are for a specific group of templates, you can create a folder for that group and drag these template commands into that folder. Then, you only have to select the lightning symbol of the folder and that gives you quicker access to specifically the template commands in the folder.
It now as AI integration, which makes this rare find even more amazing. Thanks for your great work introducing us noobies to the incredibly addictive world that is Obsidian. Withour you I wouldn't have gotten my head around it. Seriously! Your videos are an oasis in the desert (which is weird considering the user base!)
This has been great I can see how this would be useful for my daily notes. The only issue I have is that I write my log in list format with the time as a point with the log in bullet points indented after it. I can't seem to get the capture box to accept the indentation format. If anyone had any suggestions to help that would be great
Thanks a lot for all your videos. They are so we'll done ! I've watched a lot of other RU-vidrs but none have explained this plugging so far. Quick question, how do you add a checkbox that fast? Do you have a hotkey for that as well? Thanks again. I've subscribed!
Wow, thank you! I'm happy you like the videos. As for making a checkbox - go to Settings > Hotkeys and look for "Toggle checkbox status". Mine is set to CMD + ENTER, so I hit that to get a checkbox. :)
Hello and thank you for this excellent tutorial! Small question when I create a capture I want it to add this at the end of my list but I don't know why sometimes it will add it after the second line and sometimes at the end depending on my type of creation. Thnak :)
Hi @Nicolevanderhoeven question I have, in my notes template I have the date followed by the name of the note. For quick capture to my note how do I add a syntax so the quickadd capture knows to look in the date plus the name of the note? I tired this but it does not work daily/notes{{DATE}} {{VALUE}}
Great video! I love QuickAdd and have recently started using it more and more. I have two quick questions if you don't mind answering them: 1. How did you get the new contact note to automatically apply the contact template just by adding it in the contact folder? 2. Do you think it's okay to rely on community plugins? I use dataview a lot for note organization and I'm a little worried about losing the future-proof benefit of Obsidian by using too many plugins. Please continue making content it's very helpful!
Hey! 1. I use Templater! I have a video about it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5j9fAvJCaig.html 2. It's a personal decision, but I have decided I'm ok with Dataview because it uses text within a note. I know that if something happened to Obsidian and I were left with a bunch of Markdown files, I could still write a script to recreate a Dataview query if I really wanted to. I wouldn't lose any of the underlying data-- I would just lose a specific view of that data.
Thanks for the reply! 1. Oh okay! If I use Templater should I turn off the default Templates plugin or keep it on? 2. I'm not capable of coding my own replacements but I think I'm okay using plugins even for organization like dataview because I still heavily rely on links which are more univerally supported.
Hey Chase, sorry for the late reply. I'm just getting caught up with comments! 1. I turned off the default Templates myself - I haven't found anything it does that Templater doesn't do! 2. Sounds reasonable! Yeah, it's hard to see wikilinks not being supported. But if you want to be extra futureproof, you could also switch to Markdown links in the settings -- that is part of the Markdown standard and will surely be supported by all Markdown editors.
Hi there, your video was very informative and helped me out a lot in my workflow, thanks so much! I just encountered one problem: My capture-macros do not seem to be available on mobile. Is that the case for anybody else too?
thanks for your video. very helpful! I want to add the file name format as the current date minus 1, so yesterday. How can I do that? {{DATE:YYYY-MM-DD-1}} doesnt work
Thanks! Finally a QuickAdd guide I understand!! I do have a question: I want to do a log capture to my daily notes but they sit in a folder by year and month (ie /daily notes/YYYY/MM). How can I tell quickadd to use the correct folder?
Happy I could help! I showed the date formats a bit in the video, but in your case, you could use /daily/notes/{{DATE:YYYY}}/{{DATE:MM}} . Good luck :)
Great video..i have a question, if we move our file from one column of kanban board to the next column so is there a way that obsidian can apply one more template to it automatically. Can we build such automation somehow which triggers when we change the file column inside the kanban board.
I was using this the other day and it kept saying the name was blank. I had managed to add a template, but it was blank. It took forever to figure out what was going on! If you see two trash can icons but only one name, that's a clue you have nothing in the template field.
Hi Nicole! Thanks a lot for this amazing tutorial. I don't know if you've ever encountered this issue but when I try to use the Capture function I created, I get the error: "Please provide a capture path for (filename)". I've specified a folder and note, I've even tried keeping it blank or writing to the active file and nothing worked. :( Do you have any insights on this? It would really help me out!
Hi! Try enabling the "Create file if it doesn't exist" option in Settings. If that doesn't work, I would recommend you to reach out to the developer of the plugin-- they might be able to troubleshoot back and forth with you!
You might have said - if so I missed - but does this work only within one vault... or does one instance of the plug-in work across one complete machine's installed vaults? And again excellent detail... and nice ways of letting those interruptions pass through with the least resistance to the main task at hand. Many thanks.
Hi Tim! Obsidian plugins only work within the vault they were installed in, because the plugin folder is installed inside the vault folder as well. If you'd like to duplicate a macro in another vault, you'd need to either copy that plugin folder or do it again in the other vault. :) Really glad you liked the video!
Such a great Addon. Immediately installed and started using for all my templates. I also like the 'logging' to daily note. Having an issue with it though. I'm doing it in section (as you have), and it works, but doesn't insert a line (even with that option selected), so eventually it writes at the beginning of the line with the next heading. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
I noteed in this video a note you had labled "My Core Principles" Can you share with us (or just me) the propmpts you used (note format) to create the content for this note (not the actual content). Good idea for quarterly/yearly "periodic note" review. Thanks...
Soooo wish I could get this to work. I have used Obsidian for two years and have a good understanding of how to use it and a wide variety of plug-ins. I have followed your steps to the “t” plus experimented with a wide variety of ways of specifying the file path, but every time I try to run Quick Add to generate a note from a template, I get an error saying that I need to provide the template path or that maybe the template path is invalid. I see in the forums that this was an issue a year ago when Templater changes broke the connection with Quick Add. Does anyone know what the fix might be? I should add that I am using my Mac Mini and the Minimal theme.
Okay, I think I figured out the problem: the folder I use to store my templates is nested within a folder or two in my vault. That causes no problems when using Templater, but if I want to use Quick Add, it appears the Templates folder has to not be contained within any other folder (apart, of course, from the folder on my computer that houses the vault). Took me ONLY two hours to figure this out.
Hi thanks for this video. So helpful.. I'm trying to add CAPTURE quick add to my daily notes as you have in the demo. I can not figure out how to insert the capture below '# Log". I've followed you direction to the tee but still the capture is inserting at the very bottom. Not sure what is causing it, looking for plugin clashes but am lost and loosing my mind! :) Anyone else experience this??
Ohhhhh I GOT IT! Right after posting this message I figured it out! Hurray! For some reason it wasn't working with my '# Log" direction. I changed it to something else AND restarted obsidian and it worked a treat... I guess restarting is always helpful!?
Thanks for this video. When you're doing the template function and have a {{date}} in your template, how do you get it to actually insert the date? I can only get the {{date}} function to work by inserting a template into an already created document, rather than trying to use Quick Add to create the note and {{date}} at the same time.
@Ghost I found that you need to use the QuickAdd variables format instead of the obsidian templates format. So for the date, that would (for example) be: {{DATE:YYYY-MM-DD}}
Hi! I'm not sure what you mean - QuickAdd also works by creating a note, then inserting the template (just without manual intervention). Do you by any chance have Templater installed? You could try disabling Templates and using the Templater date template instead.
Do you know if there's a way to set up a find and replace macro? I currently use BibNotes formatter + an advanced find/replace plugin with RegEx, and would like to automate the latter. If you know of any way to do this I'd really appreciate it!!
Sorry, I just use VSCode, my IDE, to open my vault and do a search and replace. It's always open anyway, so I haven't needed to find other ways to do it!
@@nicolevdh Excellent video. I share the need for a find & replace across multiple Obsidian files. Would you please consider doing a video on how VSCode could do that on Obsidian files? TIA
Every time I try her file path, in all her videos, my file is created outside the oath I direct and I can't seem to figure out why. It always creates in the Obsidian Vault folder instead of the one I direct it to. I am using windows so I avoid that slash at the beginning but it still doesn't help
Hey Nicole, first of all, thank you so much for all your content on Obsidian! You have an amazing way of teaching! a thing i've noticed, and not sure why, but when i try to use the Collect mode in Quick Add, the value i'm adding to the note is actually generating a file with that name, which is not something i configured it to do. do you know if this is a known error or is there something i can to to stop this behaviour?
Hi, not sure what you mean by "Collect mode". Do you mean capture? In the Capture settings, you can set what filename you want the text to be capture in. If you choose the right note there, (NOT {{VALUE}}), then it will always add to that note.
@@nicolevdh Thank you so much! it was Capture! i got it wrong, haha. Somehow i used {{VALUE}}, then removed it and it kept the same behaviour. i had to delete the Capture i created, and then create a new one for it to have the effect i wanted! Keep up the great material! i have a few friends here in Brazil that are loving your content!
@@nicolevdh Hey Nicole! i just figured out another thing related to this. when you Add command for Quick Add Settings (Activate the little lightning to it) somehow it caches how you made it, and for updates to be done, you need to deactivate it, do the changes you want, and then activate it again )
you can do right click on the metting folder ( or use command palattes) then click "create new note from template" , so i really don't understand the benefit of this plugin
Hey Seghir, if you don't do anything more complicated than that, and you're happy with the way you're doing it, you don't need to use it! If you want to do something more complex, keep watching the video until the macro part.
Wtf are you doing! You go so detail and don’t even know what you are trying to do! It isn’t even clear, it is so frustrating. What are you doing? QuickAdd, collisions, templates, what’s anything you are doing? All that work for three titles for a new note? Doesn’t make any sense.
