Thanks for your input on this battery charger Matt. This is a great new feature for the Oly. I’m a wild life photographer. I received my OM 1 on the 6th June while I’m in one of South Africa’s 🇿🇦 famous wildlife reserves the Kruger National Park. I use a ROMOS 30+ power bank. It talks about an input and output of 5V whatever that means. While on safari I plugged my camera in and within 2hours 25mins it was fully charged even though I was also shooting wildlife and BIFs. This is magic! I’ve used Olympus for 50 years!! Best thing ever!

Seems the OM-1 is a bit more flexible with the power inputs. With the E-M1X you would really need the 3A at 9V to power the camera. One should watch out for that power rating, if you want to be able to power the E-M1X too.

One word of caution. Do not remove the card from the camera while it is connected to an external source. I just did that on my E-M1 iii and lost a bunch of pictures. Matt, you may want o test that for us on the OM-1. I was trying to multi-task - you know getting back from a shoot and wanting to re-charge the camera and download the files. I had the camera powered off, but charging through the USB c port and then I removed the card to download the files - many files were corrupted and the card showed “no files” when re-inserted. I’ll test this further when I get back from the photo trip, but this has happened twice during this trip.

@@MattSuessPhoto So not a real technical reply, but after using the cord from the Iniu to charge in camera with the Iniu charger, it charged very quickly, didn't feel like I needed to use the OM-1 cable. However, charging with the larger Iphone charger, using the Iniu cable connected to the OM-1 dual charger, it took an hour to get only a 10% charge. Question is, is it the cable, the plug or both? My guess is a high speed cable and decent charger, less expensive than one would pay for if they got an OM-1 dedicated, would do just as well. Hopefully that helps a little, I just want to get away from charging through my camera. Again, thanks for the vids.
@MattSuessPhoto
@MattSuessPhoto 2 года назад
@@AGag47 guess this depends on what power output that iphone charger has - might not have as much as the other ways you have been testing. A 10% after one hour is of course way too slow.

Matt - you mentioned you have to use the Oly cable for firmware updates, but my PC has only a standard USB port. Can I use a cable such as tether tool that is USB 3.0 to USB C for firmware updates?
@MattSuessPhoto
@MattSuessPhoto 2 года назад
That's a great question but unfortunately I can't give you an answer because I haven't used Windows in quite a while. I would definitely check with OM System support before you try - last thing you want to have happen is to have a bad cable mess up your camera during a firmware update.
@lorenilewis
@lorenilewis 2 года назад
Good video! You answered some of my questions re the power bank. But I'm a little confused about the cable that comes with the OM-1. It has 2 cylinders on it and I want to at times use my own cables which are longer but don't have the 2 cylinders. Is it really ok to charge and shoot with just plain generic cables? Also the plastic cord holder that came with the camera: if we use that every time we charge, I think the rubber cover (that makes the inputs weatherproof) on the camera will eventually break off. What do you think?
@MattSuessPhoto
@MattSuessPhoto 2 года назад
AFAIK the cable that comes with it is shielded on both ends, which you are going to need when doing firmware updates and probably if shooting tethered. But for charging you can use other cables without those shields.
@Bytesmiths
@Bytesmiths 2 года назад
@@MattSuessPhoto Aren't "PD" cables somewhat different, in that they have heavier wire gauge for the current-carrying conductors? I see cables advertised (for example) as "60 watt cables," etc. I assumed that they meant they wouldn't melt down when running 5 amps at 12 volts. Or is it just marketing?

I have an Anker 737 25600 mAh power bank that says it will put out 60W via the USB-C port, but I have not charged the camera yet as I just got it. USB-A claims 18W from the website. This power bank did not come with a bag like yours, so I cheat and use an old crown royal bag, which was formerly a lens bag. Lol, I like the idea of hanging it from the tripod while charging. Do you know if you can run 2 batteries? 1 in the body & 1 in the battery grip and still charge both from a bank? Overkill I know just wondering. Thanks great video.
@MattSuessPhoto
@MattSuessPhoto 2 года назад
I haven't been able to use the grip yet but have one on order. At a minimum when the grip is attached the power bank will charge the battery in the grip. I don't know yet if it will also charge the battery in the camera when grip is attached.

Does anyone know if the SmallRig HDMI & Type-C Adapter for BMPCC 4K & 6K Camera Cage 2960 is compatible with the SmallRig OM-1 cage? If so, then the battery could also be mounted on the cage with a separate attachment for video work. Benefits would be greater protection of the USB-C port from rough handling, as well as having the battery firmly attached to the camera for portable work. Also, a Ninja V or equivalent monitor/recorder could also be attached to the cage.

The new battery has better performance and life compared to the older ones. Regarding the charger - doesn't bother me one way or the other. People would complain of a higher price if charger was included, and complain now with charger not included and a lower price for the camera. If you adjust for inflation and compare the price to when the E-M1 mkii came out, the price of that camera equals price of OM-1 with spending extra for the charger. What I am really happy about is the new charger does 2 batteries at once, which I've already ordered.

Your argument doesn't make sense either, "I do wildlife and birds in places where I don’t want the powerbank dangling at the end of the camera" - if it did come with a charger, would you be bringing that out into the field with you? No of course not - you are buying extra batteries just like me and charge batteries in the car or hotel or home. If you want to charge 2 at once you buy the charger.
