Using the Speedy Stitcher to Sew Webbing & Canvas

The Speedy Stitcher Sewing Awl can be used when a sewing machine is not available or practical. Here we will sew up some webbing on a sailboat's tack corner to make a "dog ear". Then we will show how to use the speedy stitcher sewing awl to sew canvas using a lighter sewing machine thread rather than the heavier wax twine that comes with the Speedy Stitcher.

I can't recall how many decades I've used the speedy stitcher. I just have to have one. A few things about using one: I heat seal the ends with whatever lighter I have, then press the still melted thread with the metal at the tip of the lighter to flatten the melted thread end. Usually this means I leave a bit longer tail on the thread ends coming out of the knot. I also try to have the end knot positioned between/within the stitched fabric, if possible. In the vid he mentions keeping the knot in the middle. He means pulling both sides of the stitch below the inner and outer surface of the fabric. But you can pull too tight and stress the fabric to bunch up.(usually not desired) You can arrange the "knot" so one side(loop) is pulled completely through the fabric. This allows for one side to have a thread that is straight through all the loops. Therefore you have a stitch that can be released by pulling out the straight side thread. (obviously for only special purposes, like make a long basting stitch for temporary alignment.) Re-spooling the bobbin. I use an electric drill. The "axle" nubs on the bobbin are just long enough to chuck one of them to a drill. Getting some extra bobbins pre-spooled can be handy for big jobs or thread switching. Just like normal sewing machines. Find, make, or buy a tool to act as a stitching pony. Big paper clamps, vise grip pliers, whatever (or even a stitching pony). Clamp the fabric so your stitches can perfectly track along the clamp edge, and allow for stitching without needing a hard surface to push into. I haven't checked availability but a "ball-point" needle would be an excellent option. All sharp point needles can and will cut fabric. I use "ball-point" needles frequently on sewing machines; and other hand sewing tasks. I usually leave my speedy stitcher locked and loaded (needled and threaded). I push the needle into a small piece of plastic foam or a short piece of webbing to cover the point while in storage. As in the vid, I avoid putting the "next stitch" through any previous stitch. I prefer to not cut fabric or threads, no matter how slight the risk.

I find that attatching a no.4 or no. 2/0 saddler's needle to the tag end helps with getting it through the loop on the back side much easier when using the smaller threads.

Great demo. When finishing with the square knot, I didn't have a hot knife. I leave the tails longer than the demonstrator did, hold them together in close proximity and light them up with a bic lighter. When it burns down almost to the knot, I use the metal cover on the lighter to mash the burning ends down into the knot. Doesn't look too pretty but not one has failed for me.

I really thought I would break those needles, but as good as new despite my abuse. Btw, I am enjoying the very educational videos Sailrite makes. If only the postage was not so bloody expensive. First thing to do when you get a speedy stitcher is remove the thread it comes with as a bundle, then cut that bundle in three places severing the thread into thousands of little pieces, then throwing it into your garden bed - in fact it may even be safer to bury it for the wildlife to avoid even though you cut it before disposal. It comes soggy, melty, and gross, and will ruin any project you're working on. I prefer kevlar monofilament or kevlar twine for webbing stitching. Been using the same method for decades and boy it holds!

i really liked your tutorial on using the speedy stitcher to make a lock stitch zigzag stitch. i am thinking the technique of making a lock stitch can be used with a regular needle and thread as well? You just would not have the groove for the thread to ride inside of when going through the material? and you would not have the convenience of the handle of the tool to make it easier to make the stitches?

When I look at the close up video of the needle, It seems to me, that leather point needles are used for the Speedy Stitcher. I do not like that use on woven fabrics, because the point will cut the fibers and weaken fabric or webbing. I have used a similar sewing awl, and then I grinded the point of the needle before use, so the sharp edges got smooth. Are you able to supply needles with regular point for the Speedy Stitcher?

Perhaps the biggest thing that stuck in my mind was, very early in the book, Emiliano Marino was very firm that, apart from a few very rare exceptions...he does NOT use knots. If you have to repair a windsurfer pocket you will typically need to rip the stitches that hold the sleeve to the sail in the area of the repair so you can get to both sides and lay it flat or in the case of the speedy stitcher get to both sides then effect the repair and resew the pocket back in place.

Thanks for the video. It helped me decide what to buy. So, an awl that needs you to work on both sides of the fabric, passing a full length of thread *and* manualy doing a knot for every stich? Exactly ZERO advantages over heavy-duty needles - which are faster? And cheaper. Pass.
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 5 лет назад
Hand needles are an option, but for every stitch you are left with a blank stitch between each stitch. So if not using the Speedy Stitcher, but rather a simple hand needle you would need to stitch in one direction to the end and then when you reach that end, you would have to stitch back again through the same holes to the start point to fill the blank spaces or voids between each stitch length. So... in a matter of speaking the Speedy Stitcher saves more than half the time of sewing with a hand needle because it creates a stitch with no voids in one simple pass.
