Check out the description for a few awesome timecode generators. I use the Ultrasync one but there’s so many flavors of timecode you really can’t go wrong.
THIS. IS. BY. FAR. THE. BEST. INFORMATIONAL. VIDEO. THAT. YOU. WILL. NEED. FOR. SYNCING. AUDIO. Justin and I are homies. Both named Justin. Similar logos. BUT I have never found a greater video that shows why timecode matters SO MUCH. As a film maker who has created multiple multi cam interview projects, had trouble syncing, and switched to timecode with my latest THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW. Nothing pisses me off more than audio not syncing (maybe when Adobe randomly crashes equals my pissed off level). Time is money. Your time is valuable. Quicker workflow = Ability to create more = More Money.
Yo! I can literally see the steam coming from your ears haha. I would get sooooo mad when it didn’t sync by waveform and I had to spend hours scrubbing through audio tracks lol. Never again. 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Thanks for ALWAYS getting questions answered. You’re Awesome. Quick PSA ( Not necessarily for you because I’m sure you already know… Lol) but for others with a Zoom F6. i’m always worried about the DJ or anyone else accidentally stopping the recording during a ceremony, reception etc. and I finally figured out where the button lock function is on the Zoom F6. if you press in and hold the headphone volume knob, that will lock all buttons and knobs!!!!! FYI everyone!😃 BTW… CONGRATS on hitting 8k subs!!!
YOOO I had no idea that a button lock was a thing! Thanks so much for this haha I swear I need to do this just in case. Thanks so much! I can't believe we hit 8k!!!
Funny fact, someone posted one of your videos on one of my country photographer's facebook groups saying that you look so professional. I took a look to se what is this all about and now I've already watched a few hours of your videos, also turned on the time code for my camera and made some test to see if the sync works fine. Can't wait the next wedding to test the sync, I was rly upset about the fact that not all the clips were synced by waveform. Looks like I found a new preferred mentor. Thanks for all the information.
not going to lie man --- you may have energized me for another year. I have been filming weddings full time since 2017. I am burnt out and ready for a change. There are a million people who can film beauty shots and put them together. But this is a game changer. I filmed a wedding tonight and although I don't have all this gear I used my rode wireless pro and put it on the groom and just filmed for like 25 mins. I filmed him helping his guys get ready, him interacting with the kids in the area. Then I did the same with the bride. We will see how it comes out. But this could be the thing that really gets me out of a rut. Brides hire me because they want the beauty shots and the slow music and everytime I try to step out and do something creative they ask me for edits. maybe I need to start a entirely different company and shoot and edit this way and keep my other for the beauty shot slow mo stuff.
This is so inspiring, i have been struggling with 12 Tascam DR10l with 3 non stop talk show with multiple people, mannnn I almost gave up it was so draning . Im putting myself into timecode this year because of you brother. Much love from France
Your videos are so inspiring to me! I think you've really revolutionised the way a wedding should be shot and you should be hugely hugely proud of that. You've inspired me to finally make a long wanted change away from corporate advertising filming into the wedding space. I've booked my first wedding for July 16th and I'm super excited to put to use some of the stuff you've been talking about.
Sold!! I literally just ordered a complete timecode system that I’m going to start incorporating. Got the Tentacle Syncs and the Track E’s. I’m thinking about switching over from Premiere as well. We will see how this year goes.
Oh yea the syncs and track e’s are amazing. Especially since the sync e’s have 32bit float recording. It’s amazing. Also, davinci is KINNNGGGG lol. Definitely say switch sooner than later haha. Thanks so much for watching ❤️
Hi Justin, with all these channels of audio, and with you wearing headphones that communicate with your other crews, who is monitoring the sound. What if a radio mic goes dead, you won't know about it until the end of the day will you? And are the radio mics recording internally or is it all going to the Xoom? Thanks man. Loving the BTS.
Hey Justin! Hope all is good my man. Just got my Zoom F6. Two questions: #1 Are u using the Mono/Stereo format (as apposed to Poly) and #2 which timecode format do u prefer; RTC, Free Run etc. As Always, YOU DA BEST!!!
Yo. Thanks so much for watching. I use mono recording in 32 bit float on the zoom F6. I also use the Free Run Timecode on everything. I jam sync the zoom f6 with the Ultrasync one but you could technically use the zoom F6 as a timecode generator for your camera/other devices.
Justin do you know if you can use just a tentacle track e to record audio and send time code audio to a mirrorless camera? Or do you have to use both a tentacle track e for audio and a tentacle sync for timecode or will the track e alone do both? I can’t find that answer anywhere.
Big Fan buddy - my big question is what do you PERSONALLY do about frame rates. You shoot at 30 - but if you want that slow mo 60 or 120 that creates problems for the timecode, right? Do you never change frame rates? Or have a non synced camera for those shots!?
I thought I answered this. So sorry for the delay. So I’ve actually tested filming at 60fps. What I’ve learned is as long as the timecode frame rate can be divided equally into the slow no frame work it will be fine. For example, if filming at 60fps, your timecode needs to be set to 30fps. (59.94 is 29.97). If filming at 120fps you can set it to 24fps or 30fps. Keep in mind that in post, the software will drop frames to play it back at 24fps which means if there is dialogue involved, there may be a slight drift occurrence. In my experience, I only film slow mo when there isn’t any dialogue. Like ceremony exits, grand entrance etc. Hope this helps.
Hi, I saw you have a lot on mic, I have DJI Mic and Zoom F2, it's very good to use, but they don't have timecode... how to use timecode with that? I have 6 Deity TC-1 for my 3 cameras, one gopro and one for the zoom F6... If I use DJI MIC plugged in F6, I think I'll have timecode... but how to have timecode with F2?
Hey. Thanks so much for watching. So the Zoom F2 Bluetooth model supports timecode using the Ultrasync Blue. Unfortunately that’s the only way to use an F2 with timecode. The Zokm F6 supports timecode with the timecode port. It can be jammed and then unplugged since it has a timecode clock
With the pocket 6k it doesn’t actually record the sound as metadata. The pockets recognize timecode and update it to the files metadata. So it takes the 3.5mm input yes, but I just set my audio to camera mono or xlr1 if I have a shotgun mic attached.
@@JustinPorterMedia oh that's right. I'm also on the 6K Pro's but have never messed with TC on them. I have the new Deity TC-1 on order. Also, I'm pretty close to getting a mentor session in. 50 minutes of camera talk. 10 minutes of gym talk. 😅
@@evanthecameraman ohhh yea. I haven’t tested the deity timecode boxes but the price is definitely worth it and they have a really accurate timecode clock. Haha let’s do it! Definitely love talking about cameras and workouts 😂💪🏾
In short, it doesn’t work. All devices have to be set to the same frame rate. To shoot in a slow motion frame rate your camera has to be set to slow and quick or High frame rate off speed recording options for cinema cameras.
Haha you sold me!! Do you know if time code works well with mixed frame rates? Are you staying in 30fps all day or do you shoot in 60/24? I’ve got a pair of tentacle sync’s and will probably be getting a deity trx next!
Awesome question. I’ll go more in depth in a video but short answer is no. Each device recording timecode must be in the same frame rate. When I film in 60fps or 90fps I am off speed recording on the pocket. Sony and most mirrorless cameras call this “S&Q” for slow and quick settings. Does the same thing and keeps the sync. My recorders, deity bp-trx, and all cameras are synced at 30fps.
you’ll need one for each camera. Most cameras even cinema cameras won’t keep the sync after a battery change so each time you start it up, it’s always accurate with the current timecode.
