Here, Professor Puppet explains how to use your senses to help you feel better when you're anxious, sad, or upset.
Here's what he has to say!
When you’re worried or upset, you might need help to calm down. One thing that can help is listening to your senses. You find five things you see, four things you hear, three things you touch, two things you smell, and one thing you taste. Let’s try it!
Okay, five things we see. I see a wall, my hand, a picture, a window, and my glasses. (point to each) How about you? (pause)
Let’s try four things we hear. I hear a ceiling fan, the air conditioning, my breathing, and birds chirping outside. What do you hear? (pause)
Now let’s list three things we touch. I’m touching my shirt, and my pants, and my feet are touching the floor. What can you touch? (pause)
Let’s try another - two things you smell. I smell [sniff] something cooking and [sniff] air freshener. What do you smell? (pause)
Okay, last one! What is one thing that you can taste? I have the taste of mint in my mouth! How about you? What are you tasting? (pause)
Great job! You did it! If you’re still upset, you can keep doing this over and over until you calm down. Just remember - list five things you see, four things you hear, three things you touch, two things you smell, and one thing you taste!
