In the summer of 2007, the US Marine Corps and British Royal Navy made history by accomplishing something that had never been done before: a wing of USMC Harrier jump jets operated for several days aboard the British aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious. Military reporter Michael Jordan of Cosmos Mariner Productions accompanied the Marines on their history-making embark and filed this report as part of a longer film on US-British military cooperation. www.cosmosavannah.com

Almost outmatched by the argentine Air Force, what the hell are you on about we had less planes but didn’t loose a single one in air to air combat

That claim somewhat surprises me. Granted on paper some of the Argentine planes would seem to be capable of outperforming the Harriers. The Harriers being a bit slow for their era due to the SVTOL. But the Brits had far better sensors and avionics. Far better fighter direction. Far better training and coordination. And much better air to air Missiles.

Everyone freaking out about the language barrier comment. But honestly as an Australian with many American and British friends there is an evident barrier, we all use different words to describe the same thing. Amplify that by having an environment where Military terminology is used (in particular naval and Marine terms), it's going to get interesting, and probably identify a lot of different terms meaning the same thing in SOP's and Policies used by the different countries. Guaranteed if it was a British guy getting interviewed no one would make a comment, but because it's an American it seems to instantly draw the stereotypes and unwarranted hate or sarcasm. TLDR/Broken down 1) Different countries that speak the same language can and do use different words for the same thing 2) Military terminology can be a mind fuck, and add onto that when different countries are at play 3) And multiply that by the Navy and Marine terms, and really any naval force you will get a lot of varied complex terms that ultimately mean the same thing 4) It's probably more scary as a pilot on a foreign ship because you have to know what each word means as it ties into a guide and policy adhered by all crew on that ship, one wrong word could lead to disaster 5) Play nice we all live on the same planet, we just seem to speak differently... P.S Marines are very on the ball with attention to detail and policy, so they probably wanted to ensure that they were getting it right the first time, and respecting the traditions and SOP's of the British Navy.

I’ve never understood why they got rid of all three carriers? Especially after the lessons of the Falklands. Britain needs the ability to project power. Both to protect its widespread interests, aid its allies, and keep the sea lanes safe for trade that is so critical for an island nation. It’s great to see the Brits finally getting back in the game with the QUeen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales. They seem amazing ships. And we American friends are thrilled to have been asked and able to help get them into service by aiding in training the ships crews on F-35B operations using our Marine Squadrons, while your British flight Crews train up on and take delivery of their own F-35b’s. And in a strange example of how one good deed can spread. That US Marine F-35B training squadron that has been working with the Queen Elizabeth. They did one tour on the QE to help get the ships crew ready for how to handle the plains, off the Virginia coast. From there that Marine training Squadron slid over to start doing shake down and work ups on the new USS America. The US’s new Light Carrier/assault ship class. As it commissioned they got sent back to QE for some final training exercises as she gets her own plains and fliers. After which she will be commissioned and operational. Next they goto the USS America’s sister the USS Tripoli. After that they either go back to England to help with the Prince of Wales, or to Japan to help convert the JSNDF Izumi and Kaga to F-35B Strike Carriers. With a possible next stop off in Australia to investigate doing the same to HMAS Canberra ad her sister. There sure seem to be a lot of “Harrier Carriers” suddenly popping up. (And a helluva lot of business for Lockheed.

@quasar_33b
@quasar_33b 6 лет назад
Christofer Riche the royal navy is also getting the f35b and our carriers have ski jumps, but i think we are using a combination of angling the nozzles and the jump. From what I can find the range of the f35b is calculated from runway takeoffs not carrier takeoffs so the range for USMC f35bs will be shorter due to the flat decks unlike the ski jump which should extend the range, but it might be down to doctrine and funding becuase you have cat and trap carriers which can launch f35c which leaves the f35b to ground attack and the f35c to CAP and heavy combat roles, whereas the royal navy has to make do and make the f35b do both due to funding.
