USMLE - Everything is CHANGING | Step 1 PASS/FAIL, New Step 2, Step 3 & The Match

In a nutshell, they made the life of AMGs easier and the IMGs' lives harder.

I am a 4th year MBBS student in Pakistan who is considering USMLE. The thing is,I study in an insane way where I go through the book and verbally repeat the important points or points to remember 100 times. It takes super long like 6 literal hours for a chapter,but it works like magic where I can retain 80-90% of the information forever. At the end of 4th year,I would've covered all the material related to step 1,I can just lightly and quickly review all the material and it would be as if I am fresh on. Do I have much to worry about . I am shocked to hear that for step 1,people choose pathoma for pathology when I am out here memorising Basis by heart for Pathology. In my own batch,I got 3rd place in 3rd year and I am also able to retain microbiology very well. I am scared of the step 1 exam because of the different style of studying that people choose to be able to pass the exam. Can you please guide me on this? Like retaining the information is zero issue for me. Pathoma looks horrendous to me for the literal lack of information it has. If I choose to do step 1,I would most probably do it mid of 5th year,so I would have around a year and a half to prepare. Also,how important are connections? How hard would it for me to get used to step 1 questions and basically excel at this considering that I've learned anatomy,pathology, etc. At a deeper level than what is found in First Aid.

It would be more helpful if someone actually posts their success experience of the new Step1 pass/fail exam 2022 Great work!!

Thank You , dr.Madaan , for such an informative and useful video . Agreed with content, except that step 2ck s 60% is step 1 content. Maybe it was that way years ago, nowadays and with step 1 pass/fail , it’s totally different beast by itself. It’s so much and devil in details.Step 1 , with meticulous and precise information, seems easier to prepare compare to step 2ck exam.Step 2ck retain maybe 20-30% of step 1 information, but it does not make step 1 less important. Agreed that step 1 pass/fail made everything ( study for step 2ck, matching, extras) much more complicated.:(

This is all about to get much harder especially with the introduction of NEXT exam coming very soon...

I think this is beneficial because step 1 pass/fail encourages students to give step 1 in 3rd year mbbs. Once they have pass report. They can do US electives directly by extending internship (as electives are given for undergraduates only) and then seriously prepare for Step 2 as if they are giving step 1 first and step 2 continuously as before the change. And then have good step 2 scores and then continue their internship in India.

I can tell you step 2 is also changing, since step 1 is pass and fail for now,when i was doing my step 2 CK in October 2022,i kinda saw some similar questions with step 1 and also new long questions that consumes Time

i think pass/fail is great decision .....cause you cant tell a student you dont get to do want you want it gives time for a student to go through all four years withs peace of mind to decide what he wants and then he wiill ready to be evaluated by step exams

I agree. This is so ridiculous to make medicine become preschoolish and hand out pats on everyone's backs. Look there should be more emphasis on mental health, counselors and even more time to study for the step 1. BUT, you can't just make it so it's a plus grade for everyone and then expect the physician pool to be strong. The expectation of even the best candidates academically has fallen and so even they slack off. I worry about the patients now.

US medical students dont take their step 1 during 4 year, almost all take it right after their 2nd year

This video is extremely useful. Could you please share a video explaining if the gap of 1 to 5 years after completing MBBS will impact the chance of getting interview/ spot in residency for IMGs? Is the graduation year also one among the other filter criteria?

Brother I am giving neet ug this year.u are my role model.i passed 12 in 2020.in my first drop,I scored 453.when I started studying really hard,I started to get above 650 in every mock tests of allen.but 3 months b4 exam this year,my mother was diagnosed with cancer. If Step 1 scoring was adding so much pressure to students.... then why not just keep it scored and just not give it so much weight while selecting candidates for good residencies? Why not just select more Step 1 240s for plastic surgery? That would lower pressure yet still give students an extra opportunity to show a good score to help their application.

Hello i have posted this before on your another video but i really need help. So I hope you can see it and reply. I need some information. I'm a 2nd year med student in bangladesh. I want to go to the USA after completing my MBBS here. But including everything, just the total cost of USMLE will cost me around 30-32 lakh/3-3.2 million BDT (30k-32k USD). And not to mention the cost of living in america. I need to be prepared with at least 40-45 lakh/4-4.2 million BDT (40k-42k USD). My parents will never let me go abroad. Firstly, they don't have that much financial ability to send me. And I myself hate it if i need to depend on my parents money. I already get to hear so many taunting for getting into a private medical college with their money. I don't want to be the loser in my parents eye anymore. Secondly, my parents are extremely restricting and toxic when it comes to every single step of my life. I've been going through so much depression for so many years due to them and society. I really need to get out of here. And it has always been my dream to study abroad. But it's not possible for me to earn 40-45 lakhs even if i try to earn money for 4 years through some part time jobs while studying and start working as a doctor after my study is complete. If I can't get out of here on my own, i will be forcefully married off by my parents. My life, my wish don't matter to them. They only care about what they want me to do and what achievement will make them more proud in society. My dream and whole life will be crushed. I really need to earn money or a scholarship for it. But is there any scholarship for medical students for studying abroad? Or is there any scholarship to bear the cost of the exam only at least? If there isn't any such option, what can i do? How can i earn? Or is there no way other than just leaving my life and dream and accepting the fate my parents will choose?

A lot of the hate on step1 pass/fail move sounds like it’s stemming from the old generation being butt hurt that all their insanely hard work and mental suffering they endured during their step 1 studies is know meaningless and the new doctors won’t have to bear the heavy burden of memorizing huge amounts of almost totally useless empty jargon. Step 2 teaches you what you actually need to know and going to use as a doctor and you can ask any practicing physician at any point of time whether they used Kerbs cycle or most of the other nonsense they were unwisely forced to imprint on their souls. I so much hate step 1 and forever happy that it wont torment the young no longer. The application process will be a bit harder for a while especially for imgs but in the long run people will see the blessing of the non heavily mentally scarred and better clinically competent doctors thanks to step 2

Another reason why this is a terrible decision is because it's going to distract medical students from their studies. Now, as a way to stand-out, students realize they'd have to partake in things that are extra-curricular. Juggling those activities along with medical school is incredibly tough and stressful. This is going to lead to more mental fatigue. Student's won't be able to focus just on studies, which is going to have a negative impact.
