TBH I lost all confidence in Berhalter after the 3-0 thumping by Japan in the run-up to the World Cup. In the press conference after that match the look of shock and confusion on his face was telling. He had no idea why his team and tactics had been beaten so comprehensively. I didn't like him as manager before that game, and since then I've been counting down the days until he's removed.

That Japan Team was a Force. But yeah that loss bothered me because The First half was a spanking. And after the Halftime USMNT came in and looked worse. Berhalter did not provide any Tactical changes and Japan looked like they could have scored 3 more goals.

I still believe in Wiley especially now he's going to Strasbourg. However, I'm hoping he does well enough the club wants to keep him permanently. I don't want him thrown around in that loan army. He's still only 19, and he is showing desire to get a lot better imo.
@AMERICANULTRASTALK
@AMERICANULTRASTALK 24 дня назад
Funnily enough, my biggest problem with this (not that there’s many) is Celentano. He’s horrible, we can do so much better. I’ll also say that Esmir will probably switch to Bosnia, I don’t rate Wiley as a winger, and Downs is a little overrated just because he scored in the Bundesliga. Other than that, bring on the youth!

Excellent video. No revisionist history around the sequence of decisions and what mattered in the moment versus being critique-able but didn’t impact the final result. The shake up is needed. Great point about how three federations already axed their coaches (OK, one resigned … who knew a failed manager could do that?? 😉). Matt Crocker also MUST GO. We’re in a challenging spot with only two years to help correct this fiasco. We have to get the manager right, select the right players, and behind the scenes we need to schedule the right friendlies and maximize what few chances we have to get the new team to jell. Great stuff, guys.
@AMERICANULTRASTALK
@AMERICANULTRASTALK 24 дня назад
The problem with the friendlies is that the rest of the world is busy for basically the entire cycle leading up to the World Cup, so there’s not many opportunities to challenge ourselves (if any at all). At least if we bring in a new manager he’ll be able to implement his ideas into the team, that’s about all we can do.
@edgarcastilloarsenal
@edgarcastilloarsenal 24 дня назад
I don’t think saying the team is overrated is correct because on paper, They should have def done better than what they did. Obviously, the game is not played on paper, but it definitely all comes down to guidance and mentality.
@AMERICANULTRASTALK
@AMERICANULTRASTALK 24 дня назад
The main point we were trying to make in that aspect is that the players are too overprotected by the fanbase. Gregg is a horrible manager and contributes heavily to the play on the field, but he’s also not the one who misses big chances, turns the ball over, or plays lazy defense. Hopefully we can bring in a proven manager so we can determine what level this group of players truly is at.

@jonathonedwardmiller

One thing I want to see is an emphasis on getting player profiles like Brazil or France. Ik Brazil's not great rn but getting those pacey and technical players is going to seriously propel us. We've got players to play on the counterattack. I want to see a system around that. We also need better CBs and GKs. Imagine if Brazil had a great coach who could hold their players accountable. They'd be one of the scariest teams just based on that. I think if we can get soccer popular in this country to where kids who could be 5 tool outfielders or middle infielders, track athletes, football skill position players or even for basketball uber athletic point guards or power forwards got interested in the sport at a young age, and we can figure out a system to get THOSE types of kids playing soccer and not pricing them out, that's seriously going to help. Imagine if a kid like Corbin Carroll or Bobby Witt or Gunnar Henderson or Xavier Worthy or Amen Thompson got into soccer at a young age learning how to be technical. The good news is we're STARTING to see that little by little. An example: Kevin Paredes chose soccer over baseball, and was definitely athletic enough to be a problem on basepaths. But he decided to play soccer at a young age. But, we've still got a ways to go. I was talking with USMNTProspects and he seems to think we can build that player pool for like the 2034 World Cup.
@AMERICANULTRASTALK
@AMERICANULTRASTALK 24 дня назад
First thing I want to say quickly is that Dorival is not a bad manager, he’s not the reason why Brazil are in a slump. Recruiting fast athletic kids from a young age is cool, but they have to actually have natural talent or it’s kind of meaningless. We already have a player in the pool with lots of athleticism and no talent, his name is Cade Cowell. That’s what Jordan Morris was as well. Soccer is the most popular youth sport in this country and I expect it to keep growing, it will just take time. I talk with USMNTProspects quite a bit and I agree that we can assemble a great player pool by 2034, some of the up and coming age groups are really special.
@jonathonedwardmiller
@jonathonedwardmiller 24 дня назад
@@AMERICANULTRASTALK I agree with that. I want to make it clear that I do NOT mean Jordan Morris or Cade Cowell type players. It's not enough in this sport to be fast. You have to have technical ability. Having both insane speed and technical ability is a good part of being a world class player. There's more involved obviously, but that's a major part of it. Who is a list of guys you think can be apart of a special player pool?
@JK-923usa
@JK-923usa 24 дня назад
Good video. Areas of agreement: - GGG has got to go. 'Nuff said. - The fanbase has greatly overrated the player pool. GGG is hardly the only problem. - Weah shouldn't be a starter. He's hardworking player and seems like a good guy, but he is not a winger and hasn't played there at the club level for years. His one offensive skill is dribbling to the end line for a cross. Just doesn't create enough danger. Lack of production from his position is one of the reasons the team scores so few goals. I'd much prefer Aaronson (who at least creates turnovers) or Wright (who has a good goal-scoring run in a decent league). - Mckennie needs to be benched and I don't care who replaces him. A horrid performance demands accountability. If he loses almost all his duels and almost nothing going forward, what is he in there for? - Agree we need to try new faces. More competition for places, no more inked in starters. Form and performances need to matter. - Agree it's time for a young starter at the keeper position. Turner's distribution hasn't improved and his shotstopping hasn't been great. Time to move on, especially now that he isn't a club starter. Areas of disagreement: - Besides being injury prone throughout his entire career, Adams is too mistake prone to be the regular 6. The margins are so slim in international football that one mistake can completely change the outcome of a tournament. Adams made critical mistakes both against Neth. and Panama that completely changed the team's chances the the last two major tournaments. He does one thing very well, but is not a well-rounded player. - Johnny may not have been great in his limited time, but he looked fabulous in La Liga this year. While he doesn't offer a whole lot going forward, neither does Adams. Johnny has great positional understanding, wins his duels and makes the right pass. My 6 for the future. Look at those these little European teams that manage to grind out results against more talented opposition. Athleticism isn't everything. - I thought Ream was okay. He reads the game so well. But he is not the answer for 2026. As you noted, this is a huge area of concern going forward.
@AMERICANULTRASTALK
@AMERICANULTRASTALK 24 дня назад
Thanks for the well-thought out comment! I see the point for Adams, I still think he should be on the roster perhaps as a specialist, but it’s probably time to hand the reigns over to Johnny or Tessmann for 2026. I think the main problem for Johnny so far has maybe been a lack of chemistry with the team, he hasn’t gotten enough chances as a starter and like you mentioned he’s been great for Betis. If only we could give Ream’s IQ to Richards, that would be a formidable CB for the next decade. It’s a shame that Ream’s career renaissance happened so late.

NZ Friendly starters: 3-5-2 Gaga, Scally(cb), Maloney(cb), Richards(cb), Musah(rwb), Robinson(Lwb), Adam’s, Reyna, Luna, Puli, Balo. Rest of roster: Turner or Horvath (club starter), Lund, Neal, Ream (leader), Tillman, koleosho or Paredes. Keeping about half starters in place for some continuity. The funny thing is, the system that is set up is very defensive and passive in nature and I believe contributes heavily to our lack of goals. If you look at the quality in each area of the pitch on paper, the attack/midfield is better than the defense (particularly the CBs and GK).
