USMNT continues to struggle under Gregg Berhlater and it's time to move on from the American coach so we don't fail to capitalize on our golden generation of talent and the opportunity that presents itself for the World Cup in 2026 in North America. I brought on Alexi Lalas to discuss the state of the USMNT.

Agree... and having ALL OF YOUR players playing in Europe is NOT NECESSARILY a good think ! Especially if they are just keeping seats warm. Blaming GGG is the EASY out. The players have to be held accountable. We are not a Global Contender. Believing that we are is NAIVE ! We continue to improve and are doing it RIGHT, but culture and passion development is still in progress.

@@ivanzlatar2445Understandable but the record shows that the coaching and tactical formations from GGG are completely lackluster when facing any opponent that will punish your mistakes. The away record for Concacaf teams was only 3 Wins in his entire tenure. Granada, Honduras, and Cuba. We are wayyy too predictable - passing around the back, finding the wings, and swinging a cross to the box and good opponents know how to stop that and force a turnover high up the pitch. With the Interim coach BJ Callahan the style of play was different, much more direct and faster paced and you could see that the team was working much better with that system. Our record with GGG against the top 20 world roster is only 7%. That’s just not gonna cut it especially when we are hosting the most important tournament of the world with WC 26. The federation needs to sack him.

Awesome Interview. I appreciate how you didn't let up on your overall point (no matter how many times Alexi mischaractarized your argument). We hired a loser as coach. He's done some good things as far as recruitment but he can't properly push this talented pool. 1 cycle was more than he deserved. "Vinnie is coming to town"... yea and he is going to press Robinson in to an error, then he is going riddle our goalkeeper with accuracy so I hope the COACH has a plan... 😂

Gregg has a striker whose talent is running in behind defenders more centrally or from the wings. Balo isn’t good at holding up the ball and he isn’t very tall. Yeah, Gregg’s only strategy seems to be to go out wide and send an across and hope that somebody gets on the end of it when it’s never going to happen with that profile of player

@@MLSMoves I think that's putting it lightly. European export bolstering is a real trigger for him(ironically) while he gets quite passionate about anyone who isn't holding the players entirely accountable. I have never played or seen a team where the coach/manager was so untouchable and held unaccountable than this USMNT era. HE IS RIGHT about blaming the players, but ENTIRELY WRONG about not zeroing in on the source, which is the supposed leader, Gregg. At this point, he is undeniably the unchanged variable that holds great influence, like a manager/coach should. #BerhalterOut Also, I'm new to your channel, love it so far. When I think of a "golden generation", I think of a group of players that are excelling at club level for big teams. That's not the USMNT currently. You could go position-by-position and find only a few players that are nailed on starters for their club teams. There's actually more USMNT players that aren't starting for their club teams or are at best squad players. I think our team is a train wreck from a fitness and form perspective. Why do we keep repeating this golden generation nonsense when they have done nothing to earn this moniker?
@structuredcmlandclearingex3843
@structuredcmlandclearingex3843 3 месяца назад
Where to start with this. First, Alexi can’t be that obtuse. Really? You’re really going to argue or at a minimum imply that managers are basically irrelevant, and Jogi Loew is not really any different than Greg Berhalter? Really? Second, sure, absolutely the players are at fault for the mistakes, stupid passes etc. But who is responsible for the stupid rigid tactics, that have never worked for Berhalter on any level consistently? The only thing his teams have been consistent at is struggling to score goals. Berhalter is equally at fault because he refuses tactical flexibility based on the strengths of his player pool. This isn’t a club team where you can buy players that fit your system, you need flexibility and a simpler system that matches the players in your pool. So until we have a competent manager that can set the team up correctly, we can’t really make any judgements about whether, or how much, this generation is either over or under rated or anything in between. Additionally, the best they’ve looked was the stretch without Berhalter.
@ricker024
@ricker024 3 месяца назад
Perfectly stated. That’s when BJ Callahan was the Interim Coach and we played well. Heck I would have just promoted him to coach! The performance and the style of play was so much more flexible and fluid. There was vibrancy in the way we played. Dare I say we started having some cohesion! and chemistry being developed between the players!

Love the video, but Lalas seems to miss the massive 5 year cycle of Berhalter. His tactics are atrocious and it was on full display against Columbia. I am fine with man-management, but he and his counterpart in England play marginal football, they play favorites, and the results speak for themselves. My bigger issue is USSF needs more change on the USMNT side, team selection, tactics, and seemingly stunted communication ability seems to mean more than getting everyone to like you. Our guys got outplayed, but so much of this seems to play into preparation, and coaching. There was a shot during the match that I want framed, Callahan is showing the press to Gregg on a tablet, and Gregg rolled his eyes. Columbia didn’t do anything tactically special, America played poor tactics and that reflects on the manager. The players have to have some sort of reality check, but so does the coaching staff.

I tend to agree more with Alexi. There are 11 players on the pitch - not 12. They are the ones who have to apply their skills as a team to win the match. The coach has a job to motivate, to blend the players, to create tactics that will make best use of the players' abilities, but when the whistle blows, it's the players on the pitch who have to get it done. With very few exceptions, none of the US squad played up to their expected abilities against Colombia. The reasons vary from back to front. Berhalter wants to play from the back, but his starting back line does not have the skill to do that. (You have to ask this question: really? The better teams in the world have their strengths but they are able to go to a plan B or plan C when plan A doesn't work. The US team didn't have a plan B and did not have the basic skills to execute plan A). There's no easy answer. The US team needs to improve their skills in certain facets of the game, play to their strengths, but have the skills to execute their plans A, B, and C. And Berhalter has to actually see the same game we're all seeing and give the team something to work with. Replacing him might send a jolt through the team, but that might or might not translate into a long term improvement.

We don't play with an explosive style. It feels like we are always playing to secure points, rather than going for the win. And as a USMNT fan, I'd like to see more fluid play styles very much. As Alexi seemed to be say. Not to put words in his mouth. We need a team that has the "kill mode" that can put it all on the line and do what no other team has done before. We have the talent to make a run. We don't have the mentality many Europeans have when it comes to soccer. And that will create wayyyyy too much complacency.

I think they have been unlucky due to injuries. Gio Reyna has always delivered when he played for Dortmund, but his injuries affected his spot after being gone for so many months. Dest has poor defensive tactics, but there was a time when he was beginning to improve at Barca. Even Xavi admitted it. Then he got injured, lost momentum, and when he healed, he stayed on the bench. Adams has had many injuries too. McKennie has also had injuries, but he had a slump that was more related to his weight than to injuries. Then we also had Pulisic, who played a huge role in winning the Champions League for Chelsea but also had his share of injuries and struggled to gain the trust of the coach. Once he left for Milan, he had an amazing season. In my opinion, Musah, Weah, and Jedi are role players and are good enough to play for mid-table European clubs or be bench players for top clubs, but they’re definitely better than the players the US has had in the past. I also think our strikers are no different from Jozy Altidore; what affected Jozy was his injuries. I still think it is too early to judge De La Torre and Cardozo. I feel the only player that might be overrated is Brendan Aaronson. But imagine we had a better Us coach that can bring the best out of these players. That can even influence them in getting into better clubs simply on the fact of how they can play in the pitch. Sometimes players don’t get that opportunity in training were they have to compete against other players but when they’re in a international game European club coaches can see the talent in a game. But we aren’t going to be able to see this with Berhalter

This one time I agree with Alexi. I don’t think Greg is without fault. I get he is not the guy to get us there. However the blow out was the team did not do their job. The quality was not present and the players need to own that. Everyone keeps saying that this team should do better. Why??? Because they play on big club teams…really. I would argue that they are where they are because of $ and the American market drives club teams to sign players that are not going to hurt the team but offer an opening to the lucrative American soccer market. Soccer development in this country is broken and as long as we promote players because of who they know rather than talent in a pay to play culture we should lower our expectations.

Why is that messaging not imprinted on these players. All American Soccer fans know that these games are important with no Qualifiers. It is head coach's job to make sure the players know. The players had no spirit and Berhalter is at fault for that first and foremost. Then the players who take the mantle of representing the country should have that spiritedness. Which major tournament this summer have Americans bought the most tickets for? That's right! The Euros. Not only have Americans bought more tix for the Euros than Copa, they bought more tix for the Euros *than anyone in Europe!* Why do you suppose that is? Because Americans love winners, meh losers, and *hate being embarrassed.* Does Christian Pulisic sell more #11 Milan shirts or #10 USMNT shirts? Duh. How many Americans spend boatloads of money to watch the top 5 European leagues compared to MLS? Duh. Why? Because Americans who are already engaged are knowledgeable and sophisticated fans and want to watch great footie. That desire is worth a boatload of money. And footie is the fastest growing sport in the US. *That* is worth *many* boatloads of money. So what does all this mean? It means that the USSF is throwing away hundreds of millions of dollars every year through their toxic insistence on propping up Berhalter as coach. Seriously, they could give, say Pep, double what he asks and make that back by a factor of 10 just in the bump that news would generate. @MLSMoves I just think Low makes the most sense, he's experienced, tactically astute, and he is good with younger players (25 and under), which you guys have a lot of, the other name that came to mind was Louis Van Gaal, again he's experienced, good tactically and good with younger guys, but given his age and previous health issues (he managed at the last world cup with prostate cancer) I cant see him taking a job abroad again, Low just strikes me as an ideal candidate going into 2026

Alexi is being disingenuous here. We don’t think Aiden Morris is going to be better simply for existing at Middlesbrough. Just like we don’t think that by being in any European league makes you better than an MLS player. It all comes down to performance and the level of competition. That’s level one thinking. It’s undeniable though that our players performing over in Europe look objectively worse when they play for the national team even against lesser competition. Arob is a great case study. Just had his best season in the prem and his left wing partner isn’t nearly as talented as Pulisic. He comes to the national team and looks like he’d struggle to make a USL roster. Nobody is saying our players are perfect or even close to top team’s level but they’re better than what we’ve shown under Gregg. Additionally we’ve tried different player combos under Gregg and performance has been largely the same. The one thing we haven’t tried for an extended period of time is a new coach

I say we keep Berhalter until next year and shoot for Pep or any other better coach that is willing to take on the job for 2026. The problem is that the USSF doesn't make coaching availability easy, which lowers the quality of coaching in the country. It all starts from there and reduces the overall quality of the sport.

I agree with Lex--these players are just AS accountable for these performances. However, his lads clearly cannot consistently play a cohesive, compact match with any shape. I also agree with his assessment of previous v current generations---we have had better strikers and midfielders than these guys who could finish and defend. I thought our backline was better but dear God it's looking worse than WC '90!?

At the 7:45 - 50 mark where Lalas is talking about GGG hampering the team and players play the way they want to being BS is in itself BS. Gregg is so rigid and controlling that I could easily see him blackballing players for not following the script/tactics that he's laid out for them. Go back and watch these same players under different managers and you see them taking chances and/or varying the tactics based on what the opposition was giving them. It's only with the US National Team they they become sooo predictable that any competent coach can easily plan and execute a game plan to defeat them.

I'm sorry to have to say, but as the years go by, I can't help but believe that these older generation players/commentators are too cozy with MLS-USMNT power brokers and are afraid to rock the boat lest they lose access. It's pretty simple: - If the team's tactics are obviously flawed, then it's the coach's fault because he planned them and refused to adjust. - If the players refuse to adjust for whatever reason, IT'S STILL THE COACH'S FAULT!!!! He players obviously have no faith in him Either way, BERHALTER IS THE PROBLEM

Lalas had no solid arguments. “Blame the player too” that’s all he says. We are blaming the players but we see the talent. The players are more skilled than the players that we have in the past. US players in the past were not good dribbler they had grit but that’s all they have. If I go back in time I would only take Onyewu and Bocanegra for center backs. Heathy Jozy Altidore or McBride for the striker position, Howard as goalie, Claudio Reyna as the number 10 but I don’t see anyone else good enough to compete against these players. We have Dempsey and Donovan the best players we have ever had but given the fact that we have Pulisic I don’t think they in their prime would take his spot unless you take out Mckennie, Musah or Weah for them. What’s funny about what I just said is that Claudio Reyna never played with Jozy Altidore and played few times with Dempsey so the few talents we had in the past were in different eras playing. We are fortunate to have all these players playing around the same time and we decided to choose Berhalter to coach them?
@VladkoBruce

@@Freshnewz10 Naivee fans keep like yourself eat and breath "We have the most talented players in U.S. history". Yes, it's true but that doesn't mean much when we compared them with top Nations. How many of our skilled players can actually make it to the top 10 Nations? Maybe 1 if we are lucky. The argument about the most talented players is because the bar is so low. Besides Pulisic and for half season McKennie, every single player struggled to get meaningful minutes. Specially Gio Reyna. I like Reyna but the excuses he gets is ridiculous. " Poor kid, his agent, his coach, his club, GGG, etc. He is a very talented player that made terrible decisions. I am not defending GGG but no matter what Berhalter does in your eyes he can't do anything good. You guys demand Top notch coaches but when it comes to show up in games...... nowhere to be found. Let's start pretending we are Europeans, their leagues have Fans, History, tradition and plenty of time being around. Our MLS league is in diapers but the Euro Snoobs look down on our own league. Pathetic
@Freshnewz10
@Freshnewz10 3 месяца назад
@@VladkoBruce You can all it excuses but unless you’re Mbappe, Neymar or Haaland the fact that these players can get injured for months can affect their spots in the squads. Which brings me back to another case. None of are saying that this is a World Cup contender team what we are saying is that we should expect more from them and a good coach can do that. You can’t buy new players but you certainly can get better coaches. Teams in the past with less talent have beaten better opponents. Countries at home in the past in their home soil World Cups have done better. We definitely have more talented squads than we have in the past, we know the World Cup is at home, we know in the last US teams with less talent have beaten World Cup contenders. So why is it too much too ask for them to perform better? We are not expecting to win the copa America or World Cup we are expecting to put up a better fight and perhaps upset a few teams. There are times where players are better scouted when they’re in the field than they are in club training. Has Berhalter help any of these players with that? Berhalter kept Gio in the bench most of the World Cup. Do you remember how Klose, K Navas and James Rodriguez actually got more club opportunities whenever they played for their national teams and outperforming. This is sometimes the only opportunity players can get than training in a top European club. Gio Reyna and many other players have been unlucky with injuries and that can affect your momentum and trust. This is what happened to Pulisic with Chelsea. We know that he played a role when they won the champions league all of a sudden he gets injured and looses his spot and looses the trust of the coach. You have to be a really good player for the club to hold the spot for you when you get back. There’s also sponsorships, don’t be deceive some world class players even if they get injured and perform bad in training they can still be trusted to be in the squad once they’re fit. This is what happened with many Real Madrid players of the Ronaldo Nazario and Zidane era. But again when you have a clueless coach like Berhalter not helping then there’s no way we can see more of Reyna, Weah, or Jedi on a top club. Gio Reyna does play a dying role which in todays football he’s required to play some defensive to recuperate balls but he has been improving on that. With all that being said you can’t be so dogmatic you need to look at all the nuances. Berhalter also seems to rely on a system where some players don’t have the strengths to fulfill those duties. Unless we can buy good talent overseas there’s no reason for him to continue playing that system on these players.

They’re young, majority of our players have played at top clubs at the same time, the World Cup is at home. We should maximize this talent. A lot of our players have suffered injuries which has affected their spots but these players are way better that majority of the players we had in the past. If we look back at the squads in the 2000-2019 era I would say that only Donovan, Dempsey, Bocanegra, Onyweu, Jozy Altidore, McBride, and Claudio Reyna are good enough to compete against these players. Maybe Berhalter, Mastreoni, J Jones, Cherundulo, and Beasley can challenge these players. But notice that Dempsey, Onyweu and Altidore didn’t had the privilege of playing enough time with McBride, C Reyna, and Berhalter. The difference with the current players is that these players are all playing and are around the same age. This is why this is a waste of generation.
