Unfortunately (due to poor coaching), it's too late for this group of US players to find success in Copa America or the World Cup. Honestly? I doubt YOU even care.
"Lowered the standard"? The standard should never have been raised! This is exactly how it's always been for us, and yet people expect anything different? This is a mediocre team, with mediocre players. Sure the coaching is piss-poor, but it's not like we could improve much unless we had someone like Klopp. The reality of the situation is that the USMNT is in no position to challenge the elites of world football. Not now, not ever.
To follow up: the 1-1 against Brazil was just the second time they failed to beat us ever. Yes, we won in '98, but 1. It was during the Gold Cup and Brazil sent their B team just like we do for Gold Cups now. 2. If you thought Turner had an amazing game, well that game was that on steroids. Kasey Keller made several mind-blowing saves and when it was all said and done the Brazilian players, coaches, and media said that it was the greatest goalkeeping performance they had ever seen. So basically, we went up against Brazil's first team and got a draw. That's never happened before.
