USS Gerald R. Ford CVN-78 is an aircraft carrier for the United States Navy and the lead ship of her class. USS Gerald R. Ford CVN-78 is named after the 38th President of the United States, Gerald Ford, who served in the World War II navy including combat duty aboard the light aircraft carrier Monterey in the Pacific Theater.
Construction of USS Gerald R. Ford CVN-78 began on August 11, 2005, when Northrop Grumman held a steel cutting ceremony for a 15-ton plate that was part of the carrier's side shell unit. USS Gerald R. Ford CVN-78 entered the fleet replacing the decommissioned USS Enterprise CVN-65, which ended its 51 years of active service in December 2012. USS Gerald R. Ford CVN-78 was delivered to the Navy on May 31, 2017 and officially commissioned by President Donald Trump on July 22, 2017. Her first deployment departed October 4, 2022. As of 2024, USS Gerald R. Ford CVN-78 is the world's largest aircraft carrier.
