We visit the USS Hornet and learn about the important but forgotten Apollo AS-202 mission, its recovered capsule, as well as recovery operations for Apollo 11 including a peek at the mobile quarantine facility.
Corrections:
Since I posted the video, astute viewers corrected a few errors in the video (thank you all)
- the photo of the Saturn IB AS-202 booster being hoisted is not at Stennis for a test, but on launch pad 34 at Cape Kennedy for final stacking.
- the staging footage is the second stage S-IVB separating from the S-IB booster, not from the S-IVB / CSM staging.
- the astronauts were in the MQF for only 65 hours, not two weeks. The MQF was flown back to Houston were the astronauts transferred to special isolation quarters to spend the rest of their quarantine in much more comfort.

I'm pretty sure the quarantine thing was transported elsewhere and they lived in some sort of house for most of the time. This thing certainly beats 2 weeks in a Gemini capsule but still not great.

Yes I got corrected, it got flown to Houston, and they were transferred to a special isolation facility in Houston. So they really stayed in the this facility only for 4 days I was told.

It's funny, that you got invited because you made a R2D2 replica, and not because of the enormous amount of work you spent on restoring apollo hardware. Great video as always!

Thanks for this, Marc! A friend of mine served on the Hornet during Apollo 11 and had some stories to tell. His duty during the recovery was escorting photographers/journalists around as Vietnam was still raging and there were many things on board civilians were not to see/touch/etc. He had some great pictures. He said at the time, most of the crew considered this all a bit of a PITA as they had several shore leaves cancelled/postponed as the schedules shifted around to support the recovery training and then eventual recovery mission. It was only later they all realized what a great honor it all was.

One degree of separation do I have. I met a sailor who served on the Hornet during the recovery. I taught one of his children. He affirmed that everyone seemed to be aware of how special that event was.

"Exhibited in Canada" is CuriousMarc way of saying at Expo67 world fair in the US pavillion, the BuckminsterFuller geodesic dome. That dome still stands today as well as some of its exhibit platform, likely including the one shown in this picture. Looks like it's on the top floor. That floor is pretty much in the middle of the sphere, which puts it at about 10 stories high. During the fair, the entire globe was protected by plastics panels making the pavilion a greenhouse.

In the early 70s Apollo 9 was on display at the space museum on the campus of Jackson Community College at JacksonMichigan. It was temporarily displayed in McDivitt Hall while the museum was constructed. Shortly after the delivery of the capsule, I was able to get inside and dream for a while. All the electronics had been removed and painted wood replicas were installed. Very little of the original hardware was still in place. Several years later I worked at the company that made all the circuit breakers for all of the NASA capsules. I also worked on some testing of the circuit breakers for the Shuttle program. Jackson Michigan was home to some astronauts. James McDivitt being one of them.

I was fortunate to see the Apollo 11 module and display when it came through St. Louis. It's a bit frightening to think about being in that little container as it re-enters the atmosphere! I've seen the Apollo 9 in San Diego, and the Apollo 15 at the Museum of the USAF in Dayton. Nobody had ever been to the moon and back before, so they didn't know if there might be anything contagious on it. There are organisms on earth that can survive extreme temperatures and lack of oxygen, so it's unlikely but possible there might have been lunar germs that could have endangered people. “Better safe than sorry” seemed like a good motto here!

In the case of AS-202 the AGC was apparently removed after the flight with parts of it being sold as scrap in the 1970s. So it's anyone's guess if any of the three command modules at the Smithsonian Institution still have the electronics, including the AGC. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_command_and_service_module#CSMs_produced Also there is the unflown LM-2, which appears to be the only unflown LEM listed as not having its AGC. Though LTA-8A self evidently doesn't either, since this is the one previously restored. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_Lunar_Module#Lunar_modules_produced Another unflown vehicle there is the Skylab backup. Likely at one point fitted with a customised TC-1 computer in addition to the LVDC.

@@allangibson8494 In terms of flown vehicles there are 3 block 1 command modules; 14 block 2 command modules and 9 LEMs. A total of 26. Thus 30 would appear to be about right including the unflown vehicles. However if onl;y 15 ever flew then at least some of them must have been on several flights.

@CuriousMarc
@CuriousMarc 2 года назад
I had not noticed that! It looks like you are right on, there is a tented corridor between the MQF and the module. You can see it a bit better in the overall photo with Nixon a few seconds before. I do not know why. Maybe the medical folks that were with the astronauts in the MQF were doing some bio sampling or decontamination of the module?
@JoeDurnavich
@JoeDurnavich 2 года назад
I read somewhere that it was so that either the crew or others in the trailer with them could get access to the command module. Maybe it was to get documents or papers for briefings and/or retrieve and hand over film and lunar samples through an airlock so that NASA could get started on processing them.
@nomenclature9373
@nomenclature9373 2 года назад
As it was explained to me during splashdown 40 by recovery personnel in charge of quarantine, there is an airlock on the MQF to pass food, medical samples etc. The common quarantine zone "tent" for the airlock was used to off load some materials from the capsule. Items leaving the "tent" were sprayed down with a decontaminate solution.

Nice video on a little known part of Apollo history. At 3:38 correction. You surmise the Saturn Ib is at Stennis for a test firing. However, the photo shown is at Launch Complex 34 at Cape Canaveral in Florida. In the distance (under the "States" of United States painted on the booster), you can see the launch tower for Complex 37 and on the left edge of the picture is the top of the LC-34 flame deflector. Harvey Renshaw told many interesting stories of his job as spacecraft technician configuring the AS-202 Command Module switches for launch at that pad and on those rockets. He worked up through the space shuttle program.
@CuriousMarc
@CuriousMarc 2 года назад
You are absolutely right. I read more about it, and AS-202 was indeed assembled on pad 34, with the first stage hoisted first (which got me, because it makes it looks like a booster test), and then the second stage added later on top of it. Not put together in the VAB then rolled out to pad 39 like I thought. The pad 39 / VAB / crawler must not have been ready yet.
