Served with the Marine Detachment 88-90. I haven't been back to the ship since I walked down the brow in June 1990 as a 20 year old corporal. At the time I had no idea how memorable an experience this would be. Thank you for sharing this.
I saw the USS Missouri in Norfolk, Virginia (naval base) in November of 1953. I was only 5-years-old. My grandfather and I were there to pick up my uncle who was on the USS Lake Champlain (carrier) just back from Korea, as was the Big Mo. (I remember sailors n board throwing Chesterfield cigarettes to folks on the pier.) Anyway, I was very impressed with the Big Mo and her huge guns, and my grandfather bought me a model of the USS Missouri.
Such a legendary ship where alot of great Americans walked my uncle served on the midway in the gulf War then my great grandpa fought on D day I have alot of respect and appreciation for all our veterans thank u all for ur service God bless 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
My favorite command, of the five that I was stationed at. 1990-1992 (Decommissioning Crew). Served as the Turret 3 Electrician, Switchboard Operator, At Sea Fire Fighting Team (Flying Squad), Repair Parts Petty Officer and small boat electrician (life boats and Captain's Gig). BEST ship that I was ever on.
It would be awesome especially knowing what had happened there in 1941. Thank you for your service from an Army veteran, 1990-1991, honorably discharged.
@@Rhaumar Capt. Chernesky was a character! I remember a rumor that as we were pulling into San Fran, Greenpeace was shadowing us and probably trying to throw paint or something. Rumor had it, Capt. had one of the turrets swung over to point at them, at which point they bailed off their vessel! Can NOT confirm, I was in #4 Engineroom and barely saw daylight. But if even remotely true, sure was funny.
My grandfather served on this boat and he had TONS of stories. One of the most common was fire missions that involved support ships, that when they were all firing simultaneously felt as if his bones were creaking and continued to feel the effects even as the guns rested. He used to tell me that his buddies and him would listen to outgoing and got so good they could calculate distance, similar to lightning strikes. They would bet money, cigs and rations for entertainment! He would never tell me any of the bad stuff, ever! Although, you could tell, even at my then age of 12y/o, he saw horrible things during the war! He had the eyes of a hawk and sometimes felt as though he was looking right through me at times and others as if the man could heal the world. Their generation went through hell and came out of it as extraordinary men. I can't imagine the fear they felt and I wish when I was younger that I had listened and asked more questions! Mi vuoi bene e mi manchi nonno, con tutto il rispetto del mondo!
I got to see that beautiful old girl last week when I was on vacation in Hawaii. I had not see that ship since it was underway during Desert Storm. My ship was its air support during the shooting of the big guns. Was good seeing the parts of the ship that we were able to see but I wish there were more areas open to the public for an open tour. The engineering spaces and Broadway need to be open to walk through also.
My dad served Admiral Nimitz post war (only 7 of them were chosen). He also played cards with Admiral Halsey! My dad always talked about his experience when I was a child and I never understood his honor, until I became an adult. He told stories of personal conversations with Admiral Nimitz and his wife. Wow…
Ah wow that was amazing. I can’t believe you walked above the clouds. My Debbie would absolutely love to be there it is her perfect getaway. She actually has a bucket list, and it has one thing in it. Scotland lol. I don’t think I would be able to manage the trek up to the top with my dodgy hips. It was so lovely to see Hank remembered g where he was. A digital detox is something I think everyone should try and do. Just last Sunday Deb and I took a drive out in the car to just see the fields and landscapes. We ended up in Hastings sea front to grab a table and enjoy some good old fish and chips, it struck me then as I looked across the restaurant a family of four, two kids both head down in their phones along with mum and poor old dad just sitting there silent. I just though it was terrible to see that. Going back to the title of the film I thought for a moment you were off on your summer travels. I was hoping to whisk you three away to the Isle of Wight for a day to go explore an anchorage. Just a little treat from Debbie and I. Keep up the great stuff you three. You all work so hard it’s amazing.
I have a picture of the Missouri in my living room with the sun setting behind her it looked so awesome . I took that picture in the Persian gulf when we were both in Port together and all these years I always told people it was the Wisconsin. What a time !!
I Remember when I was a 10 year old Boy seeing the USS Missouri in Sydney,, Australia in the Early 80's, Good God She was Magnificent, I hope to see Her again at Pearl Harbour, Hawaii Some Lovely Day 👍😃
I have very rare experience I was Beruit 83-84 saw the USS NEW JERSEY fire and the Bob Hope USO show on her .When stationed out in Camp Pendleton a friend got stationed aboard th USS MiSSOURi he gave my wife and I a tour on the ship from the. surrender was signed to the tomahawk deck
When the USS Missouri was anchored at Suisun Bay Mothball fleet , I was able to fly over her in while in a P 51 Red Dog Xll We entered San Pablo Bay from Mt Diablo and flew over her twice before retuning to Livermore Talk about a “ bucket list “ item one that I will never forget
I was on that ship in 1990. My step dad was on that ship in long Beach, California. We went out to sea and they shot the guns off. I been to the bottom of the ship as well, it was pretty awesome
After touring her in Pearl , I REALLY don't think it be very hard to make her battle ready . Everything inside hasn't been butchered up . I'm surprised they don't fire the boilers once in awhile . Very impressive !
I had someone ask me why they didn't put the USS Missouri in Missouri and they were shocked when I told them that to do so would require it being cut into pieces and reassembled. The Mississippi River averages about 12 feet and the Missouri had a draft of more than three times that.
Very impressive visit. Please repeat this with a better camera (higher resolution), more clouds in the sky (because of the reflections) and a steadier hand. Then it would be perfect - more "thumbs up" for you in advance.... I feel a little sorry for the Japanese visitors: Everywhere the evidence of their defeat - also in their language. But it's ok like that. I know from my own experience that their English skills are not that good. I hope my school English is understandable? I really enjoyed your documentary and look forward to seeing more. Thank you for your contribution, Axel from Germany
Oh my goodness, the ship is convoluted. You should definitely take hearing protection with you and have a harness made. If the Missouri fires you will be thrown out of bed. Hence the belt. You should use hearing protection when you want to sleep and when the guns fire
My personal and somewhat embarrassed advice if you are a senior and you take the below decks special tour, there are NO bathrooms and it's very, very hot. But, it's worth it!
1991 contract install new deaerators tanks $400k for Missouri which at time stationed in Long Beach. seemed like waste money since a year later the ship was retired from active duty.
Great question! I’ve been trying to figure this out to, I can only assume the reason is because Pearl Harbor is a military base? All I know is that when we boarded the shuttle, the staff told us we were not allowed to film on the shuttle.
We didn’t see anything that looked like it shouldn’t’t be filmed. However I just found an article which says you need a permit to film but even if you do security will question on what your intentions are to film.
