I'm always fascinated by videos of life onboard a large ship. It's amazing to me how such vast spaces (tremendous mess halls, kitchens, etc.) can float and how much money it takes to keep such a thing going...

10 years active service, multiple carrier deployments; I can count on ONE hand the number of "bad meals" I had. The Mess Specialist ( Now Culinary Specialist ) are tops in my book. Good food served with a smile and always fresh. I was in awe of these guys and their skills. To all the CS's...thanks for the chow and the hard work. Always made sure I thanked them after a meal!

Served on the USS Independence (CV62) for almost 4 yrs. We ate very well and I got to see a lot of countries. This was from March '70 to Nov. '73.

I served on the USS MIDWAY in the early 70s, Famous Carrier. Our Navy is the WORLD'S BEST!! Food was always good except when it ran low out at sea and we had to have powdered eggs, etc. Nevertheless a Great Experience! The Midway operated in the Seven Fleet and was stationed in Yokosuka Japan, now a Museum in San Diego California. Seeing this brought back memories.

My Uncle Chief Maldanado was the best in the Pacific,Atlanic,Med Fleet etc..As the best Navy Galley Supervisor back in the 70s and 80s on aircraft carriers and the fleet.Sailors loved his chow.When he was at Coronado Amphibious Base the SEALS and trainees gobbled up his chow like crazy!He loved those guys.At Pearl Harbor Hawaii Sailors and Marines loved him too.Go Navy!As a kid back then I wished the Army had better people like my uncle Chief Maldanado.

Joined the Navy in 2002 out of Wall, SD. I couldn't wait to see the world and get out of there.

In 1954 and 55 I served 19 months on a US Navy vessel, actually two, AGCs USS Estes and USS El Dorado. I was a Marine, not a sailor and guarded an Admiral. There were about 475 men on the ship as I recall. There wasn't any nonsense of choices. The mess men simply shoveled the food on an aluminum tray. You could refuse something, but there wasn't any choice in the main dishes. We were all so hungry most of the time that we ate everything offered and few complained. I thought it was good considering it was a ship in operations and I think most of us thought the food was pretty fair. We respected the mess men and cooks. Frankly, I liked it! but then I enjoyed shipboard life and the many ports of call we made. However, I also ate C rats when back in the first div and unlike the commentator, we accepted it as the best way to feed men in the field and ate whatever was in our box for the day. There were NO overweight Marines and very few sailors were heavy in the 50s. Sailors these days have no idea what the old Navy was all about.

I cannot think of a job more important than proper food storage, preparation, and procurement aboard a US naval vessel. Can you imagine the crew of a destroyer, handicapped by a food borne illness during sensitive missions? Hats off to the food service workers!

Maybe one day I will watch this again. !

I was on a Destroyer Escort U.S.S Mcginty DE 365 ,and U.S.S Hollister DD 788 --1956-1960--I was a Fire Control Technician 2nd Class when I got out .

I never, ever had a bad meal in the Navy. I was stationed at the NCS on Guam for 15 months after Radio "A" School, and we ALL ate WELL . Civiliam run/operated Mess Hall, primarilly staffed by Chamarran and Filipino cooks. Real good stuff. Nobody ever walked out there hungry. It had the standard Navy warning at the begining of the Mess: "Take all you want but eat all you take." I was fortunate enough -- after Guam -- to be stationed on a new LKA out of San Diego. for 2 years. The food was equally as good aboard that ship. I used to LOVE "Mid Rats." They do wonders with that they had to work with.

Proud of these sailors. My father served aboard the USS Stormes, a destroyer in WWII surviving a kamikaze attack which nearly blew the ship in half.

I had good and bad chow in the Navy. Depends on the ship and crew.

I miss chow period back in the day man !!!! Biscuit n Gravy dang it my favorite with white n chocolate milk mix two of those lunch n dinner can’t tell you , but P.T. LOL

One of the hardest jobs I ever had in the Navy (other than painting the waterline) was as a mess deck Master At Arms on USS Forrestal in 78-79....I do miss being haze grey and underway. Also on my second ship (Gompers - rest in pieces) we got beer at sea after being out 45 continuous days. 97 days off the coast of Oman during Desert Shield.

Big "E" 66 & 67 and I must say the chow was great for the times, but not like the Reagan of today!!! Yes mid rats was very good as they put it together as you ordered it. I was with VA-113 The Stingers as a jet mech. and loved what I did and wish I had made a career of it!!!

I actually miss the navy. Great experiences and travel.

That is what I expected when I tried to join the Navy, but ended up in the Air Force. Military life is tough at times, but good at others, and overall I enjoyed my time served. I got to see what it is like when serving and working on the aircraft we maintained in each command I was assigned to. Navy food was great at Andrews AFB, and I enjoyed it and would love to go back there to see what it is like now. The worst food I had was the Marine chow, especially the MRE's and C Rations before that. The Air Force spoiled their personnel when it came to their mess halls and the food served in there. The best one was at McChord AFB, Washington, and so many people would stand in line to eat lunch there, and the line ran outside the mess hall and down the sidewalks.

That's alot of groceries. Good food, and it's worth it. I think our service men and women should have the best food and medicine money can buy. It's a small price to pay compared to the great things they do for America everyday.

Sept. 17, 2018----Thanks for the video. Anyone notice a lot of the crew seemed to eat in groups of color? I'm not talking about skin color, but the color of the shirts they wear. As to Navy food, did 10 in the Air Force and only twice during my time did the Air Force food give the Navy a run for the money food quality wise. One was at Goodfellow AFB, Texas for 30 days learning to run a computer, the other was 90 tdy days at Shemya AFS, Alaska. At both places, steak was served EVERY day and as much as you wanted. Got stationed at Sunnyvale AFS, Calif. with Moffett NAS having to provide us support such as food, quarters, etc. Their food was outstanding. The Air Force was good, but there's a difference between good and outstanding.

Culinary specialist, when did this happen? Anyone in a squadron knows that almost all of the CS and older MS rates just hooked themselves up with the best food while the crew, enlisted galley, got the food that was only ok at best. For the record, mid-rats was barely cooked at all.

There is one freezer unit on every carrier it is for the skipper you only know it by seeing the armorer locks on the hatch leading to it

At 11:46 Creole Macaroni is the Army Chili Mac. One of my favorites in the field, combat, MREs, and garrison. I make Chili Mac using canned Chili with no beans or with beans and boiled macaroni till this day and it brings back memories..

I loved the Navy and loved being at sea. I am truly sorry I did not reenlist and its too late now. At sea during night and not on watch I loved to sit on fantail

It is pretty well known that men who eat well will/can work well. Ample, nutritious food is the key, of course, but it has to taste well also. If you're hungry enough, you'll eat whatever they have in remote and far-off places and be grateful! (AND, they give the cooks names like chef or "culinary specialist" so they will feel important and care about what they're fixing for the soldiers! Doesn't hurt to feed the mind and spirit as well as the stomach! And you usually do not see obese soldiers, but they also work pretty hard too!

Us Air Force Airmen, circa 1980's at Minot AFB, ND . . . we had the mission, and CHOW. After chow, we treked back to the barracks, grabbed our spot, from the 3rd floor dayroom, turned channel to WTBS, Ted Turners Superstation . . . for our nightly M.A.S.H. . . . at 1900 hours (that's 7 p.m., Lol). We couldn't survive, without our regular comic/rational/motivational input, from M.A.S.H. 🇺🇸

No! There are MREs stored in those carriers for big time emergencies on board especially if there are Marine infantrymen put on those ships if they have to deployed from there for embassy rescue or deployed for any combat mission. Daily food is freshly cooked and served. Thank god for the CS's, they are one of the Navy's best. If you Sailors think they are bad. Think about us in an Army Infantry battalion in the field. You guys eat better along with the Air Force. I know. I grew up Navy for 5 years as a Navy Brat living with my Uncle Pat CPO as a CS in the US Navy.

Just saw this piece .. thanks for posting. As a career sailor, I served in USS Constellation, CV-64 years ago .... but watching these kids on these next-gen carriers, I gotta think, "man, they're doing stuff I don't think I EVER could have done!" - So proud of these professional men and women. And I'm proud to somehow be a part of the legacy platforms that made their expertise possible! :)

On a Naval Base, a Naval Camp or aboard a Carrier; Navy chow was the best because the Navy's Cooks are the best people and the best trained. I loved mid-rats the best since the flavors had more time to blend.

At 7:07, the speed line is serving up hambugers (yes, that's how they spelled it) on Mondays! I wonder how many noses they had to clear to feed a crew of 6,000?

When you were in, it probably was all in cans. With that being said, the majority of the vegetables, sauces, etc are in cans. It's easier to store, lasts longer and easier to control the trash; smashing the cans for recycling.

And while we/re at it: I used to LOVE the S.O.S. abroard the ship. Not the red sauce, but the white sauce. To this day I prepare it at home at least once a week! I don;t know why S.O.S. ever got a bad rap. It's REALLY good and hearty.

I would like to know what year men and women started serving together onboard ships? I was in from 1987-1991 and that was unheard of back then! The only place I remember Men and Women serving together in the Navy was on shore duty because I was in an aviation squadron so we had the best of both worlds...land and sea duty

i lived on C RATS......in Nam.........12 hr or more day in the sticks. one C Rat you had to make the most of it, it was food you could get out of a garbage truck

Am I wrong that if you want to stay safe in the military, you should join the Navy? I am not talking about Navy Seals, just working on a sub, ship or aircraft carrier.

Hardest course in the navy is the cooking course, no one has passed it yet!

My first choice was the Navy but I didn't know how to swim. If I knew how to swim I would have went into the Navy. I worked in Munitions in the Air Force and it is the basically what these sailors do.
