USS Yorktown was the 3rd ship of the United States Navy to bear the name of the decisive battle of the Revolutionary War. She vaulted to legend status in the early days of the Pacific War after holding the line against the Imperial Japanese Navy during the battles of the Coral Sea and Midway. She would prove to be a durable and stubborn warship to sink. Yorktown would earn 3 battle stars for her service before being lost at Midway, where her aviators played a pivotal role in the victory achieved by US forces.
Yorktown served her nation well in the short time she was afloat, helping 1st to stem the tide, then to turn the tide of the Pacific War. She was an innovative, durable design that shaped and guided U S carrier operations and naval aviation in the direction to supremacy of the seas.

My grandfather was a chief petty officer stationed to Yorktown just before Midway. He served as a director of anti-aircraft fire, positioned in the sponsons just forward of Yorktown's island superstructure. He was ordered into the water 3 times that day. Twice by Yorktown's skipper. After being ordered to abandon ship for the second time, he was recovered by the destroyer USS Hammann. Hammann then stationed alongside Yorktown. Gramps was part of a Yorktown crew recovered by Hammann that was providing water and power to those still aboard Yorktown, trying to put her fires out and save her. A Japanese submarine found them and fired four torpedoes. One missed. Two slammed into Yorktown, dooming her. The fourth hit Hammann amidships and broke her in two. She sank in four minutes. In fact she sank so fast that no one that was below deck aboard Hammann survived. To make matters worse, Hammanns depth charges were not returned to "safe" and as the ship quickly settled, they began exploding, blowing swimming sailors everywhere. Gramps survived that day. He refused to talk about Yorktown. He was quickly transferred to CV6 Enterprise after Yorktown's loss and spent the rest of 1942, and the first part of 1943 aboard her, in all of the major engagements. The stories were epic. The man was...and still is my hero.

That’s right! We defeated tyrants (Nazis and imperial Japan) and won with tyrants (big federal government and later on global government pushes)! Glad we were saved.

The Yorktown moored in SC is CV10, an Essex class carrier that was built later in the war and named in honor of Yorktown CV5.

Thank God for the skill, ability and bravery of all those great servicemen. My Uncle Mr. Oral Thuma served on this carrier. He survived and was rescued from the waters by the U.S.S. Fulton.

My grandfather was a Chief Electricians Mate aboard the Yorktown. He was attempting to repair the ship following the bombing during Midway when it was struck by the torpedoes. He was extremely proud of his time on "his lady".
