In terms of true history it was RUSSIAN team (from Russian regions of Malorossia and Novorossia which were included into Ukranian socialist republic as a gift in 1922 when Soviet Union was established) Soviet Union (1922-1991) had been a reprint of Russia before 1917. So called "Ukranian football" was based on Malorossia and Novorossia ( Russian regions from Odessa to Kiev, Kharkov, Dnepropetrovsk, Donetsk and Lugansk) and created by Soviet state and system.All prominent Soviet players like Zavarov, Belanov, Blokhin, Protasov etc. were truly of Russian origin even though they played for Dynamo Kiev (originally Russian city too until Bolsheviks created Ukranian repulic on traditionally Russian territories). There were few exceptions though. Famous players like Sabo of the late 60s and Rats of the 80s were soviet Hungarians born in USSR. So term "Ukranian football" is somewhat of a figment of the imagination or creation of nationalistically minded people trying to forget the Soviet or Russian history.
I would like to know who the supporters of the USSR team were. This tournament was held in West Germany. The team was really good and quite popular in Germany but could soviet football fans simply travel to a country like West Germany? I mean who would stop them from defecting and staying there?

But the last Soviet president did not care about the people, so he wanted to modernize the country and to Westernize it, but it failed, that is, the Soviet Union collapsed.

Yugoslav team was composed according so called "republican key" what meant that there had to be balanced composition between players from Croatia and Serbia partially also from Bosnia and for this reason there were always some excellent players left home and some undeserved call ups were maid. Just to have the right quota. Consquence was jalousy, dis-harmony in team and bad results. Strange however that there we no Georgians. Dinamo Tbilisi always had good team in SSSR times.
