Every player regardless of their background sheds blood, sweat and tears to be on the national team headed for the Olympics. If they deserve those positions, it doesn’t matter what color they are. It would be very upsetting if they got those positions because they’re black. Good luck to the USWNT 👏

But for the fact that they aren't White, no one would even suggest their ethnicity was a factor in earning a spot on a highly competitive team. So yeah, it DOES matter that people of color are being represented on the national team. Presumably the day will come when all the 'firsts' have been done and no longer notable but we ain't there yet!

Their success has nothing to do with their race. It's just inspiring to see black women excelling in a sport that is traditionally dominated by other races because of lack of diversity and provisions in lower income and black communities. This conversation is about representation and this is great for women's sport that so many diverse groups are excelling. It means that parents across America are supporting their girls and black families especially are supporting their girls and making the necessary sacrifices to excel in a sport that they are not traditionally expected to excel because of the history of the sport and the lack of infrastructure in the black communities. So it's a very good day for women and USA. It is a proud day for people of color and black women.

The average Black family in the USA has 10X less wealth than the average US White family. That doesn't mean that all Black families or people are poorer than White ones but that does mean that sports that have a high financial barrier to entry i.e. travel youth soccer, baseball, hockey, etc. are more likely to be an obstacle for young Black American athletes. Hence this is one of the reasons you saw so few Black athletes at high levels of US soccer in the past and why their current representation on the U.S. Women's roster should be celebrated.

My favourite current US player is Midge Purce and she did not get to be considered, since she is injured. She is so clever too. Since the team was picked by Emma Hayes, who like me is English, I reckon there is no doubt that this was on merit. See Heroes Among Us video about the Battle of Bamber Bridge. When in WW2 the US army insisted English pubs had segregation, I am proud to say they displayed signs saying "Black US troops only".

Hayes was also the same coach who started putting her at left back when Dunn was coached under her at Chelsea, so I find it funny that she has put her back in the frontline after years at left back for the US. Also, this might even be Crystal's last major tournament with the national team.

As a hardcore track & field fan I am used to meritocracy over skin color. If the USA women's soccer team does not do well at the Paris Olympics all this racial emphasis will have been a failure. Team USA is about representing your COUNTRY more than representing your RACE or your GENDER. Scoreboard is the bottom line in competitive sports, NOT political correctness.

Why don't the women get paid for the quality / level of their skill? Why does USA Soccer pay those that win more money? Hmm, Since the USWNT's team can't beat under 15 year old boy teams, shouldn't the women demand fair equal pay. Shouldn't the best get paid the most. 1) USA Men team is the best in the USA. 2) Any top 25 under 15 year old boys team is above the USWNT team. 3) USWNT team should be paid less that those boys. It's only fair.

Alex Morgan should have retired after the last World Cup and maybe before because she didn't contribute much to the team. She was mostly dead weight up front, and the few times she had a chance to do something, she would end up on the ground. There are very few highlights of her in the last 4+ years on the national team.

@@JustMyOpinion_1 For generations upon generations, women of color were nowhere to be seen on the USWNT, on occasion there were one or two women of color. It was the accepted norm for the USWNT to be completely white, and everyone but a few thought this was the way the team should be, regardless of the diversity of this country. So, fast forward a great number of years and things have changed, the team now looks like the USA, and now people are upset that people who have been excluded for years have taken notice of the change. Forget you. Carry on ladies, times they are a changing.

My point is that the racial makeup of a team is not more important than how they earned their spot. 64% of WNBA players are Black. 53% of NFL players are Black. 70% of NBA players are Black. Black women represent 15% of the elite gymnasts. Who is celebrating these athletes? I pray for the day when being an American is good enough, with no labels.
