It's such a crime that she's essentially unknown in U.S. aside from being attached to the Kingdom Hearts franchise. Some people are online thinking she's a new K-Pop girl which is insulting given her tenure in the industry but flattering considering her age lol Her media presence in the U.S is very niched only real gamers and anime folk are aware of her but real fans that know her catalogue knew AUTOMATIC. I would have really freaked if she performed something from her DISTANCE album.
@@vintagexparadise "Some people online are thinking she's a new K-Pop artist which is insulting given her tenure in the industry " hikaru utada is Japanese :3 the dude mentioned that others think shes Korean
She’s a living legend for us Asians. She was and still is revolutionary in the music industry. Not only that, she so damn smart she got into Columbia University but dropped out to focus on her music. She has so many hits - not to mention she write and produce her own music. My favorites are ‘Colors’, ‘Sakura Drops’, ‘Prisoner of Love’ and ‘Goodbye Happiness’.
I'm not Asian but I used to carry her albums and music vids with me even while in military training in '03. Few of my fellow Marines were surprised at how well she pulled off singing in both English and Japanese with her being from NY. Fast forward to the 2020s and one of our OTF coaches play her classic songs for about a year or two before the Shanghai Lockdown shut us all down.
I'm from the UK and she was not only my introduction to music in other languages but still remains my favorite of them. She really managed to bring an etherealness to pop that was palletable and still mainstream friendly. You could also hear her inspirations while she sounded entirely her own. but yeah I've been living in the US a while as well and it's crazy how people not only in Amerca - Europe and of course Japan ( I'm assuming a lot of Asia ) associate her to nostalgia and constantly come back to her.
@@saiko-rz7jb if we are going to be so technical like that then the success of movies like Parasite and idol groups like Black Pink are purely belong to Korea? Lisa is Thai but since she’s successful due to K-pop, me as a Thai can’t be proud of her as a Thai person? We have enough racism AGAINST us. Let’s not be racist among ourselves.
@@ciello___8307 idk, I heard about her a lot in the US because of her music in KH and then in Eva, but after like 2010 she kinda faded into obscurity here in the states
Hearing her sing her iconic First Love at her age and still reaching the high notes makes my heart ache like the first time I heard that song in my life about a decade ago. That's when you know a singer truly reached your heart and soul.
I didn't even know that Utada Hikaru performed at Coachella this year 😭 She's the artist that introduced me to not only Japanese music but foreign music in general. There's just something about her music that stands out to me. First Love, Beautiful World (from Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone), Hikari/Simple and Clean (from Kingdom Hearts II), Passion/Sanctuary (from Kindom Hearts III), Flavor of Life (from Hana Yori Dango), Sakura, Traveling, Deep River, Keep Tryin', Blue, Colors, Heart Station, and Stay Gold are some of the songs I love from her. She also went on a long hiatus back then. So happy to see her performing here 😭
…ever heard her version of Boulevard Of Broken Dreams?!?!…all the aforementioned people don’t have the blue-blood of J-Pop history like she comes from-including her parents. She doesn’t make records for cheap fame and trends, otherwise she wouldn’t come out at this point after* making record after record and living her own life. People have no idea.
Exactly. Utada's album 'First Love' is the one that sold more than any other J-pop albums in history to date, and the true piece of music which elevated the status of Asian pop to the globe.
Utada was so wonderful for us that knew her in Japan, in the 90s! She’s amazing and we non Asians also love her! ❤🎉 wish I could’ve seen her! These people are lucky! 🍀
For me, Utada Hikaru is one of the pioneers why the world is now appreciating music in Asia. There may be some other Asians who became famous but Utada is a legend.
omg she literally slayeddddd First Love. The crowd went so quiet like they were actually listening lol. Her voice sounds so strong! Always impresses me Utada mostly performs her songs in the same key they were recorded. A song when she was 16. Very underrated as a vocalist, imo.
Way before Korean wave, she's 1 of Japanese Diva that so talented and legendary. I wish she can bring old memories of high quality songs that ever made.
I knew her through Kingdom Hearts when I was about 11 and I got addicted to her music. I listened to all of her albums and I have followed her since. I have never liked j-pop, and even if I liked some manga or anime as a teen, I don't think you can like the rest of Japanese things just because they're Japanese. Her music stands out and she has a unique style and voice. It's a pity she's not listened to internationally. It is truly something else. It bothers me that only people interested in Japan get to know her. Music shouldn't work like that, but it is how it is. Great, great artist, very creative and unique voice and style. Thank you Utada Hikaru ❤
PLEASE utada have a US Tour! I want to be able to see you live so bad!!!! I've been a fan since the early 2000s and you are by far my favorite japanese artist till this day!
OMG! I grew up with Kingdom Hearts and Utada’s beautiful voice and songs. Simple and Clean was the perfect song choice for the game. Hearing her sing it live in 2022 makes me so happy, as if she’s keeping such an extraordinary 2000s game alive! She sounds just as wonderful as she did back then! ❤
I would've sang along to every song LOL! I used to sing with my friend in Tokyo. Her reaction to me busting out with Wait & See was the funniest thing. I have that video somewhere :D
Beautiful legend. Fell in love with the Japanese language thanks to Utada Hikaru in 2002 after hearing First Love. She's overcome so much to be where she is now and still doing her best to inspire the next generation. ファイト 宇多田 ヒカルさん! ❤️ She has an amazing live on Netflix for anyone who's interested. The storytelling through the lyrics are something that will be missed by many but a blessing understood by some. Play a love song 🎵
Thank you for your uploading. She's a much more better artist now. Lots of water under the bridge. I can't believe two of these songs are ones she made when she was fifteen years old.
I LOVE this sooooo much. I've been a fan of hers here in the US for like 10+ years... I SOOOOO wish she'd get more traction here. Her voice is so pretty and she's so great.
It would be great to see a live performance once in my life. Got hooked on her music starting with Automatic and First Love. All her music is special and brings back so many memories.
Awesome! One of the very few musical artists that I will gladly listen to until the day I die. She was the absolute best choice for the Kingdom Hearts franchise.
Sheeesh I would be singing my heart out If I was there 😭 I can’t speak Japanese but best believe I sang along with her at times on songs . She’s always been a vibe
Been looking for this. I'm a long time Caucasian fan from Canada who was introduced to Hikki through the First Love album by a friend from Japan who I went to school with back in the late 90s. I do also listen to other Japanese artists as well, but Hikki is just among my absolute top favorite queens.
