This video was produced for the June Sucker Recovery Implementation Program in 2009. It documents the methods being used to remove carp from Utah Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes west of the Mississippi. It has been determined that removal of 75% of the carp from Utah Lake will allow the lake to return to a more-natural state.
For more up-to-date information, check out JuneSuckerRecovery.org.

carp is actually good to eat if you know how to prepare it, you need a pine board as long as your fish and as wide, lay your carp on the board and nail it down. slide the board with fish attached in a 350 degree oven and leave it there for one hour. then remove it and throw away the carp and eat the board

My grandmother would can Carp in a pressure cooker and use it in tuna recipes instead of using tuna. Before anyone says anything negative, as long as you clean the carp thoroughly, you should have no problems with it.

George Foltz they tried that before. The cat food makers only want tuna. We should start a new canning business. Canned carp is really good! My friend used to can it and people came from 70 miles away just to get some! Crazy huh? We were trained not to eat carp. Why? Because back in the day the fish was raised for export. The government didn't want people to eat it so that they could create a national income bringing money into the new nation. It worked until everybody jumped on the band wagon! They soon flooded the market and everybody bailed out. Dumping their carp into the local lakes and streams. If you bleed a carp the meat goes sweet. The muddy taste goes out. They eat em in the south.

3:55 Pioneers died because they wouldn't drink pine needle tea. Utilize your recourses. Figure out how to eat them. Watch some Russian fishing videos. Most of what they catch are Carp and Pike. Anybody in the U.S. who knows how to prepare Carp knows the quiet joke. Many times I have gone fishing, never rigged my line, and gone home with 100 pounds plus of fish. I don't know about carp, but Northern Pike from Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence Seaway is very tasty. I learned how to filet the pike without any bones, cook them like bass with potato flakes - very tasty, not fatty, so you don't have to worry about contamination. Pike is just like Jack Perch, and prepared the same way.

The problem my logic tells me is if this was going to be successful they either would have to annihilate them entirely or this kind of large scale carp fishing would have to be a continuous without end. The carps were introduced by a very small number of a few perhaps even just by one pregnant female and decades later it is over ran. If they don't make them extinct in this lake entirely they will continue to populate and this will be a never ending project.

If from clean cool water , they can be filleted and smoked . In the 70s an old coworker would take all the carp I could shoot with my bow . Anything between 2' to 4' was his preference . He had a walk in fish smoker and must have done 200-300 pounds at a time . I must admit it was pretty tasty , and zero bones from his fillets . I think bow hunting carp was one of the funnest ways to spend a Saturday . The whole time I went carp hunting I would chop small carp in half and put it underneath my corn seeds in my garden . Corn would grow especially nice .

@@Mike-xi4zt carp were brought in as a food source in the 1800's in california. They were stocked in ponds on fish farms to be raised and sold as food to settlers and immigrants who had eaten carp in europe. First ones came from germany I believe, along with the brown trout and the ringneck pheasant for the same reason. It was a business venture that went wrong when the california state decided that it should be a food for everyone (shocking right?) and started stocking them in all the bodies of water. Well, other states east of there wanted carp too so the US gov transported them to their areas and did the same thing. Eventually they just spread everywhere and took over. Now they are naturalized almost everywhere in the US.

Because it will never happen. There are 8 major tributaries that feed the lake. In addition to that, there are side waters and canals that feed into those tributaries or the lake themselves. All of them are filled with carp. Utah Lake is the second largest natural lake and the largest freshwater natural lake in the state. The hope is that 25% will be maintained and not increased. As for the native fish, bonneville cutts cannot live in that ecosystem, however the June Sucker can and they are why this is happening. Keeping the feds out of the state to not control the management of the lake. They will be back regardless of how many are removed. Get swept over the dam from Deer Creek or they get in from the Jordan River somehow, they will come back.

As of 2017, the removal program has seen 25 million pounds of carp taken from the lake at a cost of $4.9 million dollars. They estimate 60% of the carp population has been removed from the lake and plant life is starting to recover. Plant life gives smaller, non carp fry places to hide as they mature. If the average carp is 30 pounds, this equates to 833,000 fish harvested at a cost of $5.88 each.

Funny? having read the comments in most parts of the world it seems carp are a major problem, yet here in the UK we do not see them as a problem and there are multiple places where people pay to fish, to catch carp, the turnover for angling here (UK) runs into the millions and by far angling is the most popular sport, as for owners who own carp fisheries they pay thousands to re stock there lakes and looking at some of the fish in the video they looked quite large and to buy one here would set you back 100/500 £ and even more for larger fish.

Paul, you can't argue with them, they don't do facts :). Utah lake is hyper-eutrophic, the more natural species have struggled with the pollution and algae blooms whilst the carp have survived as they tolerate lower oxygen levels. They can remove every single carp if they want, it still wont bring back there bass and trout as the water itself is gubbed! The fact that Utah has an almost identical climate to southern UK also seems to not register with them.

As the saying goes, “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure.” Carp keep the turbidity of the lake high by constantly grazing the plant life. This makes it hard for the June sucker to exist.
