During the college football game between UTEP and Fresno State, UTEP ran an incredible trick play in the fourth quarter when their QB lined up under center in a bunch formation on third and one. It appeared he would just try to push the pile and get the yard, but instead he dropped back to pass and found his tight end wide open and scored a 51 yard touchdown to cut the Fresno State lead to 26-24.

I've seen some awesome trick plays this year. Coaches are getting very creative. LSU had a subtle one in 2019 that a lot of teams have emulated where the QB fakes a QB draw and throws the deep slant after taking 2 steps towards the LOS (you risk a sack but it draws the DB's in like crazy). This play is just like that. So subtle but draws the DB's in within 2 yards of the LOS.
@andrewmcnicoll4268
@andrewmcnicoll4268 2 года назад
@Zac's DIY Guns I didn't personally care for it. It's taking advantage of a rule in place to protect you, as the QB. It's the same to me as a receiver intentionally lowering his head on a catch to try and draw a targeting call.

@@jackearley333 I watched Tebow and Cam almost every game in college and cannot think of this happening once. Source? (Regardless, it has no bearing on how QB's are protected today versus in 2009. Once a quarterback starts his slide, he can't be touched. In 2009, it was relative to when the QB was on the ground; if a defender hit him while just starting his slide, it was fair game.)

I've always wondered why teams don't do this more. It's very obvious when the defense is expecting a sneak and they're totally disregarding the possibility of anything else at all happening. There are a dozen different misdirection plays you could run off of this when it's clear the defense is expecting a sneak. Sure eventually teams would learn to stay home on receivers that are leaking out and be aware of the possibility of a pitch out to an upback, etc. But them just needing to have some level of awareness to guard against those possibilities would make the sneak itself much more effective.
@stephenbeck7222
@stephenbeck7222 2 года назад
Because normally the offense can actually get the 1 yard or whatever they need to move the chains with a pretty high success rate. But if the corner back stays with the tight end here, then the trick play is blown up, because those running backs aren’t holding back the DL much longer. High risk, high reward basically in these types of plays. Same thing with fake punts - if you know you’re going to pass, you might as well actually go with a formation that allows your starting OL to be on the field and run a play where they can effectively pass block.
@Rowgue51
@Rowgue51 2 года назад
@@stephenbeck7222 You use this kind of play when the defense lines up in a way that makes it obvious they're sending everybody to stop the sneak. Same with fake punts. They're normally only used when the defense lines up for an all out block and is paying no attention to receivers. You're not going to just randomly run a play like this for no apparent reason.
