I left Utica close to 30 years ago. It's decline is heartbreaking. I miss it for what it was, and hate it for what it's become.

Born and raised just outside of Utica (near the Seneca Turnpike!). Left long ago after finishing college. I'm not sure Utica can recover in a state with such high taxation/regulation. The good jobs just aren't there, so folks who have an education/skills often move to states with a more business friendly environment and more jobs.

Yup, same here.I left for the same reasons. I remember in the 60's into the 70's when most of the industry left Utica .

Sad but true. Given the great history Utica once had, it really bugs me that politicians and their bogus self serving policies have ruined this place. It's going to take a major political overhaul to turn things around.

If they start voting republican sure but that aint happening.. The place is a haven for criminals and ghosts" undocumented persons". Grew up and spend most of my life there.... its gotten so bad. Not just the crime but the mentality.

The state taxation caused most of the industry to flee Utica in the 60's and 70's. If that doesn't change,Utica will probably not rise again.

@@davidmarks5400 Good point. It needs to rise again because look at the alternative. It isn't pretty, which is a shame because it used to be.

A great book that got me interested in Utica's history during the 1880's is called "Clear the Tracks", published in 1943 about the life of Utica & Black River RR engineer, Joe Bromely, who grew up in Utica and started working at age 16 in the Utica rail yards in the year 1880. It's funny, sometimes sad , exciting , detail oriented and historically accurate. You'll hear about Schuyler Street mentioned a lot and for good reason. Names were NOT changed to protect the innocent. Even if you've never been to Utica, after reading the book you might feel like you know some people who lived there long ago. Clear the Tracks is one of my top 2 all time "feel good" books.

@@LocalNYhistory Good, glad to hear that. I have a link to a Utica phone book directory from 1883 . Not only does it show the names and addresses, but also shows what their profession was and sometimes their employers. I looked up several people mentioned in the book, including Joe Bromley and sure enough , they were all listed along with the streets they lived on. Many of the railroad employees, which there were many, lived very close to the railyard, on streets like Washington St, Water St, etc and many of those homes .....and even streets aren't there anymore., but you'll see them on old maps from that time period. If you don't mind, get back to me with a message here after you have a chance to read it. It would be fun to brainstorm some of the events, people, locations and landmarks.
