*Problem With Utilitarianism:* We can't truly predict what is the greatest good for the greatest number because of the existence of CHAOS in Life. (Chaos Theory)
I hate how people talk about these two theories in such black and white terms. Here is just one case in which leftists are more utilitarian: abortion. Conservatives believe that abortion is inherently wrong and nobody should be allowed to do it, based on absolutist moral values provided by a god. Leftists see abortion, understand that nobody WANTS to have an abortion, but understand that having an abortion is sometimes necessary and in the best interest of everybody. So I think your assertion that human rights activists are inherently more kantian isn’t really true. I think this moral theory absolutism is dangerous asf.
I think your statement is also very "black and white". Kind of ironic. With your logic, I can say all conservatives want war with the middle east as that will bring the greatest happiness regardless of the innocent lives lost in those arab countries. But ik that's not the case with all conservatives.
I think so too. Both sides of the abortion argument think they have the morale high ground and will not relent as they firmly believe they are right. Who is to say what is right but the victor? Just like war, the victor is the one that writes history (until another victor comes along and rewrites it). A quick edit: I recently heard that every-time a group of people tried to deny another group the dignity/humanity of another group, they eventually failed. History will tell us which has the greater dignity/humanity, the mother or the unborn.
Kantian ethics do be bullshit. If a is true, and b is true, then c MUST be true. Kant puts this towards his whole humans have souls, humans have reasons, therefor there MUST be a god. Lil bit of a jump, no?
