Let’s get to know about these different varieties of Sarees from the states of Uttar Pradesh & Uttarakhand.
Banarasi sarees are a pride of Indian culture and heritage. Each saree is a fascinating tale of the traditions and values, reflected from the soft, lustrous fabric, brilliant craftsmanship, surreal designs and patterns, and intricate zari work which is carefully crafted thread by thread.
Banarasi sari originated from the holy city of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh which was known as Banaras in ancient times. During the Mughal period, the artisans from Banaras started making unique silk brocades using gold and silver zari threads. Though the Banarasi sarees are the most well-known for silk fabrics, they are also made using georgette, tussar, organza, chiffon, and cotton fabrics.
The pure definition of grace, sophistication, and unrivalled beauty, a Banarasi saree is a must-have in your wardrobe for weddings and ceremonies.
Another very beautifully embroidered saree is the Chikankari saree. Chikankari or Lucknowi Embroidery orginated from Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh. The word Chikankari, which literally means embroidery, is an ancient form of white floral hand embroidery that is intricately worked with needles and raw thread. Chikan is a delicate and artfully done which is one of Lucknow's best known textile decoration styles.
Chikankari was traditionally done on fabrics such as Muslin and Mulmul, commonly known as "Tanzeb." Over a period of time, it has expanded to fabrics like silk, nets, georgette, cotton and chiffon.
The Lucknow chikankari technique involves block printing the design on to cloth using indigo dyes. Then comes the embroidery process with needlework tracing the ink patterns.
The elegance and comfort of Chikankari saree is totally unmatched and makes it evergreen.
Now let's know a little about the Aipan Saree of Uttarakhand.
Aipan is ritualistic folk-art form, native to the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. It is drawn to commemorate auspicious occasions and festivals. Traditionally the Aipan was used to decorate walls, papers and pieces of cloth by drawing various geometric and other figures of gods, goddesses and objects of nature.
Nowadays this art form is used to enhance sarees as well. The beautiful painting is done along the border, pallu and blouse. Aipan is hand painted mostly on pure tussar silk sarees.
Pichora is a traditional attire of the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. It is a long scarf or dupatta that is worn by married women on all auspicious occasions, such as weddings, festivals, rituals, and ceremonies. It is a handwoven fabric made from a combination of cotton and silk threads. The unique aspect of Pichora is its reversible nature, with different designs on either side. The motifs on Pichora often depict local flora, fauna, and cultural symbols. Pichora is considered to be a symbol of marital bliss, prosperity, and culture.
Pichora is worn by Kumauni women as a part of their traditional attire, which consists of a sari or a ghagra and a choli. It is draped over the shoulder and across the chest, covering the back and reaching up to the knees or ankles. It is yellowish orange in colour with red or maroon polka dots, hence, it is called Rangwali Pichora or Rangoli Pichoda.
So, saree lovers, it's time for you to visualize the rich treats of the various types of sarees which you will witness through my eyes in my upcoming video series MY CULTURAL JOURNEY - SAREE YATRA
