At least in Eastern European Christian countries, it’s because the Soviets tried to shift the focus from Christmas to New Years, due to them being against religion. As a result, most Russians, for example give gifts and celebrate New Years instead of Christmas. It has probably carried on to Muslim majority ex-Soviet states through this.
