Usually composers like Tomasek are standing in the shadows of the great composers, but this work stands totally on its own in full sun light. No shadows here. Brilliant, eloquent and very moving.

Not a single DOWN thumb as of 26 Feb 2016! Mr. Tomasek has made a very positive impression.

Another underrated Requiem to throw in the pile with Cherubini and Michael Haydn.

Quelle très belle école que celle de tous ces compositeurs de la bohème et la tchèquie, inconnus même des plus grands mélomanes !!! C'est vraiment très beau, émouvant...Quelle puissance, surtout dans le Dies irae...

Very impressive piece! Yes, there are some parallels to the Mozart's Requiem, but it seems that they are only the common stylistic elements of classicism, not more. And there is a lot of specifically Czech beauty in this music...

If you've heard God speak through Mozart (the original requiem, not sussmayrs perversion), it's difficult not to remember, even imitate, his voice in any attempt at a requiem.

While this Requiem doesn't seem too original, with echoes of Mozart's unfinished masterpiece (and by extension, Michael Haydn's) often manifesting themselves, though never to the point of slavish imitation, the high level of writing makes up for that. Overall, a very satisfying work (a minor quibble on the abruptness of the Agnus Dei's close, but it doesn't detract too much). Tomášek wrote this in response to viewing the village of Stran after its devastation by a flood. He wrote the Dies Irae section first, then continued the rest immediately without pause. Upon finishing it, he gave it a careful once over, then concluded that "there was nothing in there which could possibly disgrace the sacred style; rather on the contrary, I was able to afford myself with good reason the benefit of having met the strictest artistic criteria, and of offering to the world of music an opus which can safely claim its rightful place alongside other Requiems, including even the most celebrated ones." Now, nearly two hundred years later, we can happily agree with his self-critique. Well done, maestro! www.requiemsurvey.org/composers.php?id=761

Okay, if you say that this requiem is a slavish imitation of the Mozart's requiem, thus you'll agree with me that the Mozart's requiem is an Austrian imitation of the Jommelli's requiem.

This isn't 'unoriginal' in the sense that it is derived from a particular work or composer. You say it contains echoes of Mozart's requiem and by extension Michael Haydn's, but I would say it is simply written in a similar style to those composers and therefore is only 'derived from' those composers by extension of that fact.
@Galantski
@Galantski 2 года назад
@@Zimzamzoom95 One way or the other, it's mere speculation some 200 years after the fact as to whether there was a conscious effort by Tomášek to borrow from those masters. But even if for the sake of argument there wasn't such an effort, it can scarcely be denied that composers living in Central Europe would have at the very least have been subconsciously influenced by the music of firmaments of the First Viennese School like Mozart and the Haydn brothers. There would be no shame in lesser composers like Tomášek emulating the greats, when even a giant the likes of Beethoven.in his early works drew inspiration from them.
@Zimzamzoom95
@Zimzamzoom95 2 года назад
@@Galantski Of course, I just tend to be skeptical about this stuff because too often we overemphasize the 'greats' and downplay the importance of those outside that special group. Sure, Mozart and Beethoven and Haydn had a huge influence on shaping the music after them, but they weren't the only ones. The influence of the Italians, for example, is often left out of the picture despite their vast oeuvre of influential opera and sacred music. One might notice this especially in Haydn, who studied composition under the great Nicola Porpora.
