Västerås is an urban area in Västmanland and a central town for Västerås municipality , city of residence for Västmanland County and diocesan city for Västerås diocese . Västerås is Sweden's sixth largest urban area with 128,534 (2020-12-31) urban dwellers. The city is located on the northern shore of Lake Mälaren , about 100 km west of Stockholm .
The city's earliest name was Westra Aros , Västra Aros, where Västra refers to latitudes and Aros means estuary and refers to the Svartån's outlet in Lake Mälaren. East Aros (which was the current port of Old Uppsala ), originally only Aros , was located at the mouth of the Fyrisån river in Lake Mälaren, and is today called Uppsala . The place is mentioned in the Florence list , originally from 1103, as "Arosa".
