Ólafsson teamed up with director Magnús Leifsson to shoot the video in a fish processing plant in Iceland, complete with grand piano. They use the fish, an early Christian symbol, to allude to the mysticism and timelessness of Bach’s music - as changeable as water, it has to be understood at a metalevel, given the many different ways in which composition, transcription and performance can be interwoven. “Everything is there in Bach’s music,” says the pianist, who transports the composer’s keyboard writing to new shores on his latest recording. Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson releases video featuring music from his new album, Johann Sebastian Bach.

What do you think about the music video's interpretation of Bach's music?

Your videos are beautifully emphasizing Bach's music. Full of emotions, penetrating deeply in our souls.Please, do continue making those kind of videos. Congratulations to the filming team, to Víkingur Ólafsson ( wonderful pianist ) and thank you Deutsche Grammophon. Thank you, Herr Johann Sebastian Bach.

The video, the story told, adds so much to Bach's music. The Prelude is not just music, it is telling a story of the human condition. The video is perfect and I think Bach would be pleased.

In answer to your question (of a year ago). I think this video is perfection. I am a 52 year old. I was a professional ballet dancer in my youth and so learned Bach (Scarlatti, Stravinsky, Hindemith etc. with a Balanchine company) with not only my ears but my body as well. Bach's prelude No. 10 has a quality of unreachable sadness, or melancholy, that stretches away from the listener. All our lives are filled with one kind of mechanized habit or another. Are they not? This guy here, well he's a spot on an assembly line, a cog in the machine, a life inside a box, a breath in concrete cave. And why? ...Vikingur is right. This is who he plays for. I've been in opera houses and stages all over the world full of awesome, wealthy patrons with white hair (like mine, now), and beautiful clothes. But that is not, perhaps, who needs Bach most. I feel this is a Paean to the warehouse man. and that is a right thing for it to be.

A very romantic interpretation of a baroque piece; the purists will object but I really like this. "So long and thanks for all the fish", Douglas Adams.
@StoneChords
@StoneChords 3 года назад
FYI there's nothing for "purists" to be concerned about here -- it's not Bach or Baroque, it's an arrangement by A. Siloti which is unto itself inherently Romantic (cf. for example the pedal markings in Siloti's score).

Vikingur Ólafsson is definitely a deep thinker and an artist in music. I can feel his persistence and passion through his interviews and the way he translates his thoughts through his piano music. So beautiful. I was in art school for 10 years before I dived into the world of music. I love Bach, too. When I stumbled upon Vikingur’s NPR home concert, I immediately felt in love with it. All the videos are very thoughtfully done. They speak well for his music.

I am still quite young, but many times I have felt tired of my life. I try to find meaningful connections, but society feels disconnected to me. A part of me just wants to quit the imaginary social construct we are all tied to. That is, a person must find friends and companions. But sometimes people make me feel more alone. And watching this video made me realize there is hope in exploring uncharted waters.

Lovely piece. I've had this job before. Except working on an actual processing boat 100+ hours a week. Sorting salmon,gutting them,packing add to the fact its small quarters and you share a room with 8 other men. Tempers rise and personalities clash. All in the end you make a few bucks and a lot is taken for taxes. Never again.

Or would you not prefer a contemporary, albeit romanticized darker rendition, included in a pre-apocalyptic visual comment, more in tune with today’s environmental and social concerns?
