@@BritanyBinges It's great. The original graphic novel (from which a lot of the dialogue comes) was written by Alan Moore, who wrote Watchmen and many other great stories. Very intelligent man. I cry every time I watch the scenes where Evey reads Valerie's letter.

Hugo Weaving crushes it as V, from Agent Smith to Elrond to V, the characters he plays are iconic, and I feel like he doesn't get the credit he deserves for this role, almost every word he says is gold, for a man who you never see the face of, you get to learn so much in the way of words from him.

I didn't realize it was him until someone mentioned it on Patreon after I published the reaction there. I mainly knew him from The Matrix at that time (I had technically seen LOTR, but only once and don't really remember much of it). He really creeped me out in the Matrix so I was shocked when I learned he was V. His performance in this is mind-blowing.

Seems like bullshit that RU-vid would demonitize you for music at the end when it's public domain: 1812 overture.@@BritanyBinges
@BritanyBinges
@BritanyBinges 10 месяцев назад
@@paintingcube3853It's not the song itself. It's using a long clip of audio from a movie that is the problem. Copyright owners submit their works to RU-vid so it can be used as reference specifically for copyright violation checks. If too much of my video matches up with too much of their video (aka, the movie or episode I'm reacting to), it gets hit with a copyright claim and the video can be demonetized or outright blocked. So, it's not the song that's the problem, it's the movie. The copyright checking system (aka the Content ID system) is an automated bot, so it frequently gets things wrong or is far more strict than it needs to be. Creators can appeal the copyright claims issued by the automated system and have a real person review it, but that process can take up 30 days. Also, RU-vid regularly demonetizes videos for using music creators selected from RU-vid's very own "copyright safe" music library. So, they literally penalize creators for putting music in their videos that RU-vid specifically told them they could use in the first place. I've also had a copyright claim on a video that was just of me talking. No music, no reaction. Literally just a video of me sitting in my office talking straight to camera the entire time. So, dealing with the copyright on things is definitely not at straightforward as it might seem.

@@BritanyBinges Not commented yet (& I don't want to edit my initial comment) so I will add it here; I like the symmetry between V (actually 5 from his room number but V is better) & Evie, both of their names are V, V was born in fire while Evie was born in water (rain), V was a person turned into a monster that never lost his humanity whereas Evie was a person that found herself & her humanity and finally that V started the revolution in anger & Evie ends it in hope.

@billlupin8345
@billlupin8345 10 месяцев назад
So an element I wish they kept, V was grooming Evey to be his successor. In the comic, when he died, he left Evey with a riddle; you must know the face beneath this mask, but you must never remove it from me. Meanwhile, the head inspector was telling everyone that V was shot to death. Cut to Evey dressed as V shouting to the crowd from a rooftop after parliament blows, quoting Mark Twain; "rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated!" To V's thinking, Anarchy has 2 sides, a destroyer who reduces the totalitarian government to rubble and chaos, and a builder, who uses that cleared space to build a new age of self governance. He was the destroyer, and he left it to Evey to build anew.

A detail I don't see mentioned is the white chalk cross Cready is told to put on his front door. As the camera pans over the test subject doors to V's room, the doors of the dead are marked with a white chalk cross. By giving the instruction to Cready V is getting him to mark himself as a dead man. Subtle, symbolic and deliciously petty.

A few tidbits: 1. The most important distinctions from the graphic novel are that A. V is explicitly an anarchist and B. All of the government systems were wired into a supercomputer which V had hacked, explaining why he could run circles around a paranoid police state. 2. The graphic novel was written in the context of the Margaret Thatcher era, thus the references to discrimination against gay people. 3. The dead characters appearing at the end are meant to be symbolic.

Hugo Weaving was excellent as V. There wasn't one bad actor throughout, even the cheesiest parts were played to the max. But Portman's portrayal of Evey was an absolute masterclass & she carried it over the line - utterly believable from naive fledgling to terrified prisoner to fearlessly decisive maturity. Evey's character is up there with other female roles like Ripley from Alien - being a woman or showing emotion doesn't mean there's no strength to get the job done. Like Sin City, it thankfully never shirks away from its comic book roots in look, action or dialogue. Special nod to Stephen Rhea as the Inspector he's such an underappreciated actor. (I know some of the original writers didn't approve of the changes, but IMO, the comic was politically relevant for it's time & the movie was relevant for ITS time).

It's Hugo Weaving beneath V's mask. That's Agent Smith from the Matrix, The Red Skull in Captain America, and Elrond in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, to name a few. Bonfire Night, celebrated in the U.K. every year on the 5th of November to mark an attempt to blow up Parliament by burning effigies of Guy Fawkes, the man who became the embodiment of that particular act of sedition and rebellion, is a proud tradition. We have a special toffee and everything

I mainly knew Hugo Weaving from The Matrix at the time I watched this (I had technically seen LOTR, but only once and don't really remember much of it). He really creeped me out in the Matrix so I was shocked when I learned after releasing the reaction on Patreon that he was V. I had heard of Bonfire night and Guy Fawkes prior to watching this, but I didn't really know anything about either and I didn't realize they were connected.

@BritanyBinges
@BritanyBinges 10 месяцев назад
I've responded to someone else regarding this, but it's not a quick/easy response so I'm just copy/pasting what I replied to them with: "It's not the song itself. It's a very flawed automated system. So, dealing with the copyright on things is definitely not as straightforward as it might seem."

Classical music from the classical music era is all copy right free. It’s all in public domain so you don’t have to mute it. That’s why so many movies and tv shows use classical music like Beethoven and Bach because they don’t have to pay anyone for the rights.

The film is adapted from a comic that was started in 1982, then the original comic folded (pun intended) in 1985 and it was republished and completed in 1988/89 by DC Comics. For all that it resonates now it was intended as a critique of Britain at the time. The film was released in 2005 and here we are, another (almost) 20 years later. The comic is well worth your time (the story is different in many details) and is available in a collected edition.

I definitely agree, although I know it's not a popular opinion among fans. Liberty vs. Fascism resonates, especially in the last 20 years or so. The graphic novel's dichotomy of Anarchy vs. Fascism for me does not. In addition, the GN is really an artifact of its time of Thatcher's England, while the film is more timeless, as a culture and nation being taken over by fascists/authoritarians/totalitarians can happen in any era.
@Muckylittleme
@Muckylittleme 10 месяцев назад
@@stevensauer8539 Oddly though, fascism is actually a left wing ideology but history got rewritten (again) The word fascism is derived from the Italian fascio which was used figuratively by late 20th century Italian socialists who became known as "the fasci" Mussolini was an ardent socialist much like his Father and formed their local socialist branch. Mussolini was arrested for rioting on left wing marches and wrote for hard left socialist newspapers in Spain before joining the Italian socialist party. Another rewrite of history is that Mussolini was kicked out of the party because his views were more right wing when in fact it was because he demanded Italy declare war on Germany in support of socialist France in WWI. Only in later decades has Mussolini been called "right wing" on the basis he took money from Western financiers in his later years to remain in power. It is much the same with Hitler who always referred to himself as a socialist. In interviews he was asked why he hated the Communists to which he replied the true nature and pure form of socialism was nationalistic and Communism was a bogus form of socialism. Hitler based his governance on earlier Scandinavian Socialism which he outwardly admired. The point is that right win and left wing are just labels, they are there to give the illusion of choice when all that really matters is truth and justice.

@@Muckylittleme fascism is a marriage of state and capitalism under far right ideology, liberalism. It is a compromise to protect profits at all costs. The italian fascist was an opportunist that cynically used his parents legacy to give him self some legitimacy in the eyes of the working class. Especially after the turbulent times of the interregnum.

It is scary to see certain parts of it reflected in today's real life, but it also gives hope that those times will never last. 😊 If you're looking for inspiration, I highly recommend The Lord Of The Rings.
