I got a record player for Christmas in 1971, when I was 13. I didn't have much money for records so I went to a local second-hand shop and found Pawn Hearts for 50p. It had only come out a few months earlier, so I guess someone had bought it, listened to it and got rid of it very quickly. I had never heard anything by VDGG at that time, but I liked the name and the record cover, so I thought I'd take a chance. When I got home and heard it, it blew me away. Absolutely amazing. Peter Hamill's voice was like nothing I'd ever heard. The fact that the band didn't feature a guitar was extraordinary. Everything about it was just weird, but I loved it.
You've spelled the band's name incorrectly (you've spelled it the way the scientific apparatus is spelled). The band's name is 'Van der Graaf Generator'
