Setting the engine up and breaking it in.Remember this engine is just being started after a rebuild so that's why it's smoking from the assembly lube and the rack will be set-up to stop the hunting etc etc. Then the oil is changed and the engine painted. These engine's go into Euclid mining rock trucks,and they were in many other equipment/vehicles.The engine has rebuild heads,turbo's, blower, water pump,all internal parts and the air compressor All done in the great north of Canada

GM diesels are some of the most reliable engines ever made... I've worked in the marine industry since high school,and in my experience marine applications are the ultimate stress test. We had a 71 series V16 that had a broken crank but did'nt shear completely,and that engine ran for 6 hours at 800 rpm to get us back to port.
@researcher4good
@researcher4good 10 лет назад
To those who think it's a v6, no it really is a v12. 12V71T to be specific. To those who think it's being revved too high, no. It's a 2 stroke with 12 cylinders. These redline at 2100 rpm. At that speed, a cylinder fires 420 times per second which makes it sound like a V8 four stroke revving at 6300 rpms. 50% more cylinders, firing twice as often.
@mikenkfalls
@mikenkfalls 4 года назад
These engines red line at 2500 at load and 2750 without a load. I have had many of the older 8v71's at 2500 with a load. These are not engines that you can lug. They have to be ran hard at high rpm. If you lug these engines they will blow.

These Detroit V-12 turbo diesels were used as a STARTER MOTOR on a General Electric Frame 5 gas turbine generator. They turned a torque converter and a jaw clutch to spin the turbine up to firing speed. For 3 minutes they screamed at wide open throttle, then went to idle cool down. The turbine put out something like 30,000 horsepower. I love that Detroit sound....

Yes, that Detroit sounds just like a V12 Deutz. Two of those on the planetary reduction gears powering the props would be awesome. They make great off shore fishing troller power plants! Two of these engines could power a 150-200 foot yacht or fishing vessel up to 35 knots. Sweet music from the exhaust pipes!

Back in the late '70s/early '80s I used to drive a Bedford TM running at 32 tons fully loaded. That truck took a fair time to become popular because it had a DD 6V-92. Very few companies wanted one as they were really committed to Cummins and Gardner diesels. Drivers didn't want it either because in our firm, they were all older than me and brought up on big, slow running motors, but I loved that wagon. It had been a demonstrator for a dealer so it had a nice paint scheme and twin vertical stacks, and it sounded awesome, especially going uphill, although it also looked like an air pollution monster as you were really aware of the exhaust smoke because of the stacks. The TM became more popular when it got the Cummins N14 and L10. They were cleaner and more economical but they never attracted the attention (good or bad) that my Detroit did.

BTW the engine shown is a 12V71 T. A second world war designed General Motors engine that just didn't die. It's little brother the 6-71 was used a lot by the Navy during WW2 in landing craft, PPBs, and just about anything that needed moving. Before they went out of production in the early nineties GM made a 24V71, two of the 12's bolted together end to end, that my friend was a sight. "General Motors 2 stroke diesels, the most efficient engines ever built for turning fuel into noise" love 'em.

I farm on the Texas Great Plains. Water well drillers often use the 8 72 and 12 71 Detroit to drill and bail 100,000 of wells is this area. There is nothing like a 12 71 on a cable tool pulling out the 14" diameter bailer from a 800 ft well in a minute or so round trip. This action is to clean out the drilling mud and set the gravel between the sand formation and casing.`

@robertreznik9330
@robertreznik9330 8 лет назад
+epistte I said they use these 2 cycle engines on a Bailer. Which is a cable tool rig that cleans out the well after the casing and gravel pack is in place. Some drillers use a 2 cycle on the turn table and mud pump. Because they like the simple dependable 2 cycle had about 30 hp / cylinder. If the power stops then expensive drill stem is stuck in the hole. The driller I used on my last 6 well was Hydroresources they use Cats the one before was W.D. Jones Drilling they use Detroit..

@ThePaulv12 5 лет назад
About these parts I have seen on a drill rig (from a distance being driven in traffic) either a 12V92 or a 16V71 (poss even a 16V92). I can never get close enough to tell but I can see 2x cylinder heads on one bank and a turbo on one side sitting like this in the vid but on top of an inverted 'Y' so it can't be a 12V71. It may even be a 149 Series I just can't tell as it's always moving. It's on an old twin steer bogie drive rigid and has the derrick?? laying across the length of the truck and over the top of the cab and the detroit. I wonder what powers the truck?

@vtr0104
@vtr0104 7 лет назад
It would go slow because, in spite of what it sounds like here, it's only turning a little over 2000 RPM. It has torque, for sure, but your problem would be the weight of the engine itself. Detroits were never light engines, mainly because they were fitted to trucks and buses that had huge frames to support them. Considering the Honda joke usually refers to a Civic hatchback, which is a uni-body construction, this engine would literally drop through its floor if you tried to install it. And yes, I said floor, because you'd not be able to fit it in the engine bay... And given the size of the transmission and rear-end needed to run this thing, you're better off trying to swap it into a Ram or a Silverado , and even there you'd need to modify it heavily. But hey, at least those were made to tow things, which is what this engine was built to do :)

@kamphwagon1 I agree...buffer screw needs a little tweaking. Rolls a little at an idle too. This is what most veteran truckers would consider "ear candy", a very bad disease indeed. But you have to die of something, so it might as well be from overexposure to loud diesel engine noise and excessive exhaust fumes to end your life in the right way.

I think gm under estimated hp on Detroit engine. I remember my dads 8v71n it had 333hp rating with a Allison dr750 automatic transmission in a dump truck. I had the throttle set up only to open up 1/4 of full throttle. I done that to keep him from breaking drive shafts. I'm thinking that 12v more like 750 or more HP.

+Cem Sezer I 'drove' 8-71 T and 8-92 TA engines on the highway for 30 years pulling one or two trailers loaded with cubic freight but quite often heavy freight. The Detroit 2 stroke was a great sounding engine and when geared up properly and with the right diff ratios a great drive. Only problem was they did not have much torque and hated heavy loads in hilly country. I would 'round up all the Cats and Cummins guys on the flat ----- and give them a wave as they passed me on the next hill. They were an engine that had to be driven as if you wanted to blow it to pieces - and quite a few guys did just that..

M stands for marine. N stands for needle valve, C stands for crown valve, HV stands for high valve, Ect and the 92 in a 9290, 9205, 9215 or 9225 stands for developed for 92 serise engine but it is also a Needle Valve injector. The last two numbers denote the fuel delivery. 90 is 90 ml of fuel per 1000 strokes at full fuel rack position. 05 is 105 ml, 15 is 115 ml of fuel and 25 is 125 ml of fuel. I rebuild and use these engines and fuel pumps.

It is a nice motor, has a lot of power. I rebuilt several in the fishing industry. You will se two strokes engines, but many of those engines have no valves. Detroit has them, and they are exhaust valves, the air enter the cylinders when the piston is down, at that point the valves are open, and the exhaust gases go out by the valves. The turbos pressurizes the air entering the blower, ny this menaing the engine has more power. You noticed the engine goes up and down, this is an adjustment.

some people think that twin turbos will make it have a crazy amount of power. some times engines are turbocharged to "clean up" the exhaust. like the m35a2 or "deuce and a half " the stock m35a2 non turbo put out 130 hp. with the turbo added it came to 135 hp but the turbo cleaned up the crazy amounts of black smoke that are produced from a multi-fuel engine.
@opieknievel
@opieknievel 12 лет назад
In my opinion the smoke is residual assembly lube. If you notice after the engine gets running the steady smoke goes away and the only smoke is when the throttle is pulled wide open and the extra fuel causes smoke until the engine reaches the governed speed and the fuel amount matches the rpm's.

Ive seen two of these chromed out at Vegas truck show when I was there with my truck. This v12 also has blower. Take a good mechanic to tune these run like that!

I could do it with my eyes closed, not hard once you have set racks and governor gap, hundreds of times. At Detroit Diesel we used to cold tune them, dyno them under load, then hot tune the valves and squirters. Then you would see the horsepower at full noise.

Those engines go also in M108, M109, M109A1 and A2, M110A1 and A2 self propelled artillery. I used to maintain and repair those engines for 31 years.
