I’ll never forget that Montana episode. A lesser man (me) probably would have started crying and used the Garmin to call for help! 😆 Can’t wait to see Orangie the l legend back in action.

I loved that episode as well. My thought was just hang out enjoy the snow and let the sunshine do it’s work. There are far worse places to be “stranded”…..lol

Which episode was this? Trying to find it to make sure I saw it Nevermind found it. Yea that one was wild

Why? Maybe if the winch crapped out in that moment and more bad weather was rolling in or whatever.

It is great seeing it come together (Orangie v. 2.0). The flashback to the winching in Montana was, IMHO, the most enjoyable episode to date! I remember that one distinctly.

That comeup winch saved your bacon on that trip Chris.....I remember that video... you just stopped for a couple of hours and the snow piled up so quick you were trapped. That has to be one of the best documented single handed vehicle recoverees....

In know that episode had him second guessing himself afterwards, understandably, but it was great to see that he stepped up to working hard to recover himself. Bravo 🙌 I agree, it’s gotta be in my top five Venture4wd episodes of all time.

🤞 I installed my new Warn Zeon Platinum 10S (with the remote) in 2020. In 10 months I respooled it twice with only enough load to wind the rope tightly. The last time was before we left to go West to the Absaroka mountains you had to winch out of and up into Montana. 4 months later I needed that winch to flip a Jeep off of its side and it wouldn’t unspool more than 10ft and two fingers holding the line could prevent the motor from respooling the line! I know it’s likely an anomaly but Warn says it sounds like the brake failed so I decided to try the newer Comeup Seal Slim for almost half the price. Buying a $1900 Warn didn’t buy me any luck. I’m just glad it wasn’t needed when my family and I took our two Jeeps and family on a 6500 mile trip last Summer. (The trip west) So again, my 🤞 for the Comeup. If I get issues with the motor seizing, I’ll repack it with synthetic grease. Moisture/condensation may have gotten in there too rusting things up. I wonder if grease was the problem with your Comeup?

There are reports of the $300 harbor freight winches lasting years of hard use and no issues. And issues like yours with a super expensive model failing in a short time. You never know and I suspect a lot of the components are the same in winches but drastically different prices for name brands.

It's really kind of good seeing the progression over time from what you had then to what you are going with now. For us at least!!! nice to also have an affiliation with a source like OK4WD. We have a 4WD source here locally, but they only do 4WD...no overlanding or very little overlanding. It makes most overlanding modifications a DIY project....and you have to have the tools and expertise to do it right. Wishing you a million more miles with the New Orangey!!!!

Hi Chris, there is a company in the West of the U S, that puts extensions on Jeeps, maybe might be interesting for you if you ever need more inside space... Some fellow RU-vidrs " Epic Family Road Trip" put it on their 2 Jeeps...ì

Chris; did you ever repair the tear/crack in the sheet metal above your right front fender?
@TheWozWizard
@TheWozWizard 2 года назад
I was wondering if you might have any thoughts/solutions to a problem that has recently begun to affect overlanding. That is the rise in fuel costs. As a part-time overlander I have had to cut back on the number of trips I plan to take and instead of wandering the back country exploring any interesting trail I come across I find myself more closely following a pre-defined route.

I'm just wondering why the tech used a drill to drive screws rather than an impact driver. Also, why was there red line ahead of the Spectra on the winch?
@Jtwizzle
@Jtwizzle Год назад
Some people prefer drills for some reason. Ive met a few. The red is a extra shielding for the layer on the drum to protect from heat, it also doubles as a warning when you are getting near the end.
@darylnd
@darylnd Год назад
"A potentially lifesaving piece of equipment." Or a potentially lethal one. There's so much to have gone wrong with that recovery, in the middle of nowhere, I cringe to think about people spending thousands of dollars to hang hundreds of pounds of false security on their rigs.
@Jtwizzle
@Jtwizzle Год назад
I mean its the best option for most people. Ive had one for years and used it a lot and never a single issue. Probably just as likely to have other issues stranding you like engine troubles, etc. vs a winch failing.
@darylnd
@darylnd Год назад
@@Jtwizzle It's not the mechanical reliability of winches that concerns me. It's the many variables--some known, some unknown--that any vehicle recovery in the backcountry presents. Now make it a solo recovery, with no assistance around if things go awry. The author admits bad judgment in getting himself into the predicament documented here, but how many people heard that and how many were caught up in the admittedly excellent production values and the romance of self-recovery. The point is, it's sometimes necessary, always dangerous, and shouldn't be dismissed with blithe assertions about "a life-saving piece of equipment."
@Jtwizzle
@Jtwizzle Год назад
@@darylnd Valid point. One thing I notice since having a winch is I am willing to take more risks. A trail I would not consider becomes a "hmm might be able to make it, winch if not".. lol
