Here's a tool that anyone overlanding needs to keep in their glove box. Its a glass cutter so when you get a star or the beginning of a windshield crack stop assp and cut around the star a 1/4 of a inch and the same on each end of a crack this prevents any further spreading and damage to the glass.

Chris, my ‘13 did something like that. An unexplainable hesitation, low rpms in 2 or 4 high. No codes and unable to recreate the issue for my local Jeep service dealer. I upgraded the fuel I purchased to mid-grade or I would add octane booster and the problem disappeared. Issue was gone with the first fill-up. Give it a try. If it doesn’t work then you are only out the $5-$10 for a bottle of booster or the few bucks for the 89 octane at the pump.

Chris - great episode. We had a strange hesitation in our '15. Try shutting off traction control, see if that helps. Ours turned out to be a wheel speed sensor wiring harness grounding out on the chassis occasionally after a wiring harness chafed a bit. Felt like bad gas, but the jeep thought a wheel was slipping and was pulling fuel from the motor to stop a skid. No codes.

I hope you get the jeep sorted so you can explore between the 53 and 54 parallel . Get on the rout De Nord to Namiscau ,a very friendly little Cree village , fuel up , or groceries , then Eastmain 1 to Muskeg 1, to Billy Diamond highway (James Bay highway) .Then north to Radisson Marker 617 KM, for supplies. Back down to marker 544 KM, and the Trans Taiga intersection , turn left and you are on your way to remote travel 666 KM long with no towns. It would be a shame to come all that way and not do the Taiga Bucket list or the little Cree town of Chisasibi near James Bay , and camp on the remote shore of James Bay. Cheers wild Bill overlanding the Arctic watershed of Northern Ontario and Quebec Boreal forest and Northern Taiga .Never stop Exploring!!

Hey Chris, I’ve been a mechanic since the early 80’s and if it were my car i’d put a fresh set of spark plugs in it before moving on to more complicated things. A bad plug will do exactly what you described and may not set a code. The next thing on my list would be to check for vacuum leaks particularly on an intake runner. if it was an electronic/ computer issue it would most likely set a code. An ignition coil pack could also cause that condition but would probably set a code.

I was there in that town back in the late '60s when I was a kid. My mother is had relatives there. I haven't been there since and by the looks of it it's changed a lot. There's only one road that went in to that town and it was gravel all the way from Southern Quebec all the way there. So a lot has changed and at the far end of town the road ended so a lot of things have changed in the last years. Interesting. Great stuff. 👍👍🙂🇨🇦

Check the Oxygen sensor, (there might be 2 of them...one before the cat and one after), and the fuel/air mixture sensor or the mass air flow sensor. Is the catlyltic converter the original one?. Could be dirty fuel injectors, or fuel pump starting to go out. You have dual gas tanks, so switch over to the reserve tank and see if it solves the problem. Might be contaminated gas since it started stumbling after you filled up.

As someone who's spent thousands on my jk I feel your pain. I've upgraded or replaced almost everything with the suspension driveline and steering. Now i have transmission issues. Code for a sensor going bad also. Sometimes I want my Toyota back. It wasn't as capable as the jeep but even though I abused it badly it never left me stranded and didn't cost me near as much as the Jeep has.
@janpur1417
@janpur1417 Год назад
Strange it happened today: I have 4 toyotas and still they are running good. Now I am searching my 5th 4x4. Options were LC 200 and Armada (Nissan Patrol). Though many have said Jeep is not as good as a toyota, Chris and his travel has made me to consider a jeep too! In fact I was thinking about a Jeep at the beginning of this video.

@@janpur1417 I've wheeled at one level or another around 30 years and jeep...they are beastly. Jk and JL seem to be the problem children. A good TJ or YJ would be my next choice. Depending upon application. The bigger the build the less road friendly. I'm on dana 44 ultimate aftermarket axles and stayed with 35 inch tires. 4.5 inch lift with 4.88 gears. Big part is mine is a 2 door so even less street friendly. But you give to get. If you wanna go places most Toyotas fear...you want a jeep

Hi Chris, it sounds similar to a common problem with Landrover Freelander 2 diesels where the engine seems to "cough" at 1800 to 2000 rpm. The accepted wisdom is a replacement MAF sensor, MAP sensor & replacing the intercooler hoses with silicon hoses as there may be a small split in one of them. I'm still waiting on access to a workshop where I can do the work so, currently "enjoying" the cough! I have in the past replaced the crankshaft position sensor which helped & the camshaft position sensor which also slightly improved things. Hope this helps.

As a fellow 2013 Rubi owner, we’ve shared a few common issues. I’m much lower mileage than you, but still over 100k with plenty of off-road mikes across the southwest. I’m assuming the shop you went to checked fuel pressure. That would rule out the “lifetime” fuel pump. Otherwise, that’s certainly a potential source. Another is the crankshaft position sensor. If they didn’t put on a new one with the engine swap, 200k is about the expected life for one. My guess is they put in a new one. It’s a cheap and easy replacement. So maybe it’s just a fuel issue. You go through plenty so I’m sure you get it from a variety of stations with varying quality. You might want to keep a fuel additive handy to add in every 3 to 6 months. I’d recommend BG 44K. You could even grab a simple octane booster to see if it was an issue with the gas you have in the tank. Add it, drive it, and see if the hesitation is still there. Was the transmission replaced as well?
@irishdefense77
@irishdefense77 Год назад
When a crank position sensor fails-the engine stalls instantly.What he’s having are fuel issues.Something as simple as bad fuel or water in it,or injector trouble.Every time I have ever seen a CPS go bad-the customer states the same thing-I was driving and the engine stalled and wouldn’t restart.
@micd9256
@micd9256 Год назад
@@irishdefense77 The CPS could be failing and not failed completely. It’s true that a failed CPS would prevent engine start. A failing CPS can exhibit a variety of symptoms depending on the type and placement. On the Pentastar 3.6, temporary stalling type behavior is a common symptom.

I think a vacuum leak could be plausible. Have the, hook a smoke machine to the engine which pressurizes everything with smoke to identify a leak. It could be very small, but that will do it.

Back in the 1960's, early 70's. You could file a mining claim down in places like Big Sur, CA. An annual fee of $35. Gave you access to 10 acres and all the natural resources available on those 10 acres. The permissions to build a cabin and a utility/shop structure, In perpetuity, Just renew the $35 fee every year, Then the area was converted to US National Forest. Expired mining leases were and are absorbed into the NFS. There are no new claims offered, The smart folks continue to pay their annual $35 fee,,,,,

What is new on your engine? Did you install a new long block? And use the intake manifold and fuel system from before? We need more info. It could be old catalytic converters clogging up with the byproducts of breaking in the new engine. Or the oxygen sensors could be off by those same break-in contaminants. There are many possibilities for your situation.

The problem with some technicians is that if the computer doesn't tell them what's wrong they don't know what to fix compared to many years ago where you could make funny noises to describe the problem to your mechanic and he'd know what was wrong or at least could figure it out and be able to repair it.. Maybe that's the real difference between technicians and mechanics.
