When it comes to running an integrated farm, livestock is critical. What we consider a keystone animal for us may be different for some, but today we're sharing with you how and why we raise this particular animal here in the desert.

I wish you were my nextdoor neighbors. LOL! I'd be over there all the time, helping and walking around. However, I'm about an hour and a half away from you. There is nothing more calming and relaxing than being in the kind rural, natural surroundings that a farms brings. There is nothing like it.

Considering your loading design and particularly your thoughts to minimizing the stress of the pigs, Temple Grandin will sing your praises. Super goodness. "Oh yeah!" moment as I glimpse the moving of the turkey tractors at 8:59. Marvelous green layer of happy grasses and forbs protecting that soil. "Animanure" you heard it here first. Support for the passion and thorough planning for all your good animals, even the ones in the soil.

Another informative video about your farm. It’s great to see that you’re creating a symbiotic ecosystem where the pigs help improve the soil for the plants, which help feed the next generation. I appreciate the effort to raise your livestock humanely and healthily. Plus adorable 🐱!

Have you noticed how small plants grow behind your feeders. Plus there's run off outside of the pen. You could use that to pop small bushes being you feeders, and plant stuff in those run offs and maybe little trees or fruit trees in there too. Love how your gorgeous cat has to get in the frame 😂

Following you guys, your animals live such a good life❤ living in Georgia, Perdue is here, Tyson is here.. and, i used to work for Georgia Farm Bureau, and have met the farmers.. My question is??? They both came out with a free range, organic line?? But, NOBODY I know in the state has EVER seen ONE CHICKEN walking around outside??? They are raised by the thousands, in these massive buildings, and they smell, so bad, we all roll up our windows when driving by.. So Why do they list free range on chicken that's NEVER seen the light of day??? Do they open up a window and give some 5 minutes of sunlight and call that free range??
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 3 месяца назад
I'm glad you enjoyed this one and boy, do we know EXACTLY what you're talking about! My understanding is they only need to have "access" to a "pasture" in order for them to qualify. Problem is, meat chickens never wander far from their feeding troughs and will not go outside unless prompted. Hence the reason we raise ours in chicken tractors and essentially force them to move from one patch of grass to the next. Watching them pound the greens when you move them is a sight to see though!

so glad to hear your ethics with how you raise your animals. I lived for a short time in Indiana. there were pig farms. They were kept in large barns. I never saw them outside. even though the state has mass amounts of vacant farm land. You could smell the pig farms for MILES! I don't know how they could breathe. If everyone could experience their commercial environment, they would never forget it. it's horrible. My chicken journey started 8 years ago. I have free range happy, healthy hens, and my eggs are incredible. i'm sure all the commercially raised animals have high cortisol levels. I encourage people to raise their own or search out ethical farms. maybe you might know of some sources you could point people too.
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 3 месяца назад
Sounds like you're right there with us. There really is nothing quite like fresh eggs from hens that never see the inside of a barn. Our pastured chickens are pretty much the same. Haven't purchased store bought eggs, pork or chicken in years and wouldn't change that for the world!

Very useful video, Duane. You mentioned that sometimes one doesn't make it. My question, as a (hopefully) future homesteader, is what does one do with the carcass? Also, what if a chicken or turkey dies? I've heard some people feed the poultry carcasses to their pigs. Do you have any thoughts on that? Perhaps you could do a video on this subject? It's hard to find information because it's not a fun thing to think about, but it's a part of farming.
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 3 месяца назад
These are great questions and we do need to discuss that. We have a section in the far corner of the property we call the "bone yard". We place the carcasses there and within a week they are completely gone, save the head of larger animals. The coyotes, vultures and other critters do a very thorough job of it. We do feed our pigs cooked meats and chicken carcasses, but we avoid feeding them raw animal proteins.

I LOVE that you don't use vaccinated pigs! I also love that you treat your animals well. If you didn't, I wouldn't follow you. Here's my question...why do you buy a variety of pigs and not just one type. Does the pork taste different based on the variety, or is it just more fun and interesting to have different types of pigs?
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 3 месяца назад
Great question Taylor and I can't give a solid answer. What it all narrows down to is what's available when we get our pre-sale done. We're more particular with who is raising them and what they are (or as we addressed in this video are not) using on them. They also need to be the right age. We have not seen any significant difference in the meat quality from one breed to the next, but this year is the first time we've finished almost exclusively on corn, so we'll have to see if that makes a difference once we bring ours home in a few weeks.

We have a LOT of coyotes around, but no livestock guardians yet. They (coyotes) don't get anywhere near the pigs, even when they're small. I (Duane) have a hard time wrestling even little 30 pound piggies! We lock everyone else up at night until we got those dogs.
