Great video! But I don't see the schematic in your blog. Would be so helpful to see that. :)

According to the Noritake tech sheet "A Guide to Fundamental VFD Operation" the filiment AC should have a small DC bias (Ek). The reason for the bias is to avoid ghosting when the anode is at 0v.

This video was very helpful, thanks for uploading. There are some slight glitches and it jumps multiple minutes back at about 14:50 but it was very informative.

Chef Geoffrey Excellence eww, not sure what happened there. I have an issue with making videos: at the moment all I have is my phone, and that stops recording when the file gets too big, and I have to join files together. There's never any warning either.

I've heard of people setting a timer on a watch or something for, say 10 minutes then they would pause recording when convenient, then resume to stop those crazy cutoffs. In any case, I hope you get a solution in place soon. Thanks again for the video, thanks to you I got a new VFD and a vintage 1970s VFD that hasn't been turned on for the best part of 20 years up and running again. I'll be sure to check out your other videos.

Thanks for that tutorial Where can i find a parts list and schematic please? Cheers

Although I don't understand English well, but mainly because of the photos, the video was very informative. However, my great difficulty is related to the Arduino code, for example, how to map the VFD pins with the controller driver, like, for example, what is the connection order of the pins, or does it matter what the order is? In fact, I would like to make a watch; Thanks

Two weeks back I salvaged this VFD out of an old VCR. Having hard time figuring out the pin layout. Could you please assist me with this brother.

I'm would like to power the filament as you do with 2 pins alternating high and low but no VFD I've worked with draws as low as 19mA, all have drawn between 150-200 mA at 3-4 V. So I'm looking for a transistor circuit to do it, if you have a reference I would appreciate it. You mention an H-bridge circuit on your blog, I'll look into that.

I followed this and got it! Awesome! www.build-electronic-circuits.com/h-bridge/

scusa se sono un po' fuori tema, sono in possesso di 8 valvole IV-17 a 18 segmenti, è possibile pilotarle con arduino per fare apparire scritte a piacere? mi puoi aiutare ?Grazie

It could be the camera is picking up IR but it seems you have way too much filament voltage. You should never see it glow!

I pumped up the camera settings specially so you could see the filament glow. You can't see it glow with the naked eye, I just wanted to demonstrate where it is and how it heats up. For reference, the segments behind it are all off. They look on, but they're actually off, it's pumped up that much.

hmmm, you have 9 digits so you have 9 grids...9 wires for the grids,,,,,the anodes of the seven seg digit are all tided together with the anodes of the other digits....so seven wires for the anodes....so ,,,,,,,,,,,,,you strobe the grids correct....if my eyeballs were strobe to match the frequency i would be seeing one digit at a time?

Correct. Multiplexed just like many LED displays.
