Following the Critics’ Choice feature in the last issue of Dance Europe, we invited our readers to vote for the year’s outstanding dancer from the 12 Dancers of the Year nominated by our writers. And the winner was the Royal Ballet’s outstanding Russian principal, Vadim Muntagirov. AMANDA JENNINGS, one of the writers who initially nominated him, met up with him at the Royal Opera House to ask how the last year has been for him...

Vadim is such a modest guy..a lovely personality and magnificent dancer. A rare " breed" of dancer who just takes one's breath away when he dances..The Royal is fortunate to have him......Great interview..

Well, having just witnessed his debut as Rudolf in Mayerling, he certainly did have a dark side in him! One of the most stupendously devastating performances I’ve ever seen - incredible debut 👏👏👏

A good interviewer who allows her guest to speak at length. I hope the RB now assists its graduates a little better than in the past! In a way it was good that Muntagirov started at the ENB which led to his very successful partnership with Daria Klimentova, and lots of practice dancing the great classics, touring, etc. He is always a great pleasure to watch: a magnificent dancer and a lovely human being.

This was an Amazing interview with Vadim Muntagirov in November, 2021. I just finished watching Stella Mikhal's 2017 ballet documentary "Agony & Ecstasy A Year With English National Ballet Episode 1" when he was just 20 years old. Thru the years, Vadim demonstrated maturity, intelligence and good command of the English Language with this interview. Kudos to Amanda Jennings, Dance Europe Writer, for making this possible.

He's just such a lovely person, so humble despite his incredible talent and he works so, so hard. Just so lovely to see. It's amazing him and Nela both being such huge talents and humble, it must be why they work so well together and get on so well. The Royal Ballet is lucky to have him. I'm so privileged to be able to see him live in action.

We were really sad that Marienela and Vadim couldn’t come to South Africa to do Don Quixote in Johannesburg. We were so so disappointed when the lock down happened in March 2020. A once in a lifetime gift taken away. So grateful to see them together on RU-vid but it would have been an unforgettable experience to see them live.

So interesting how the Royal Ballet loves to claim credit for the Russians they acquire after they have received their basic training in Russia, which is the key to their talent and success as dancers. They invite these Russian trained dancers to complete their training at the Royal Ballet School, beg them to stay (often to the detriment of the dancers) then claim credit for their talent. If the Royal Ballet School wants to produce dancers as good as Vadim Muntagirov, perhaps it should revamp its school to produce excellent foundational training, without having to grab young dancers from Russia (with Russian training), then claim credit for their success. The irony is that, when the Royal Ballet has an excellent dancer in its midst, for some reason, it fails to acknowledge it and leaves the dancer without chances in the corps. Then a Russian director comes along, recognizes the enormous talent of the corps dancer, invites him to dance in Russia, with the dancer becoming a much loved and admired principal dancer in one of the top companies not only in Russia, but in the world.

Interesting comment and I have to agree with you- to a certain degree. Maybe I am uninformed but I only know of Muntagirov, Osipova and Polunin as russian trained (or as dancers from Russia). Polunin and Muntagirov both choose to go to the Royal Ballet school after the prix. They had a variety of excellent schools to choose from who all would have happily accepted them. If they wanted to be trainded at the Rbs as their first choice then why shouldnt they go? They choose the rbs over their old schools for a reason. If Vadim wanted to he could get into any company he sets his eyes on and same applies to Osipova I guess. They are loved and celebrated ballet stars all around the globe. And this is (in part) because of the royal ballet. They have been given the chance to dance and shine and represent the ROH over and over again. Vadim has danced and trained in England since he was 15 or 16. Do you you really think that he didnt learn a thing from his new teachers and mentors and stopped growing? It is isnorant to say that he only is who he is now as an individual and artist because he recived russian training once. Their journey starte in Russia/Ukraine but the all are where they are now because they went every step of the road. Because the didnt stop training and growing when they came to England and they got excellent training and coaching from teachers and Coaches, who were Ballet stars themselves, provided by the RBS and RHO. And I can only imagine that you get better payment and more individual freedome at the RBs compared to russian Companies. Big plus: no director or dancer at the rbs had to survive attempted murder.
@ntricker
@ntricker 2 года назад
Vadim himself, in more than one interview, has credited his early Russian training and his wonderful teachers, but he also credits his RB training with teaching him different techniques including fast footwork and detail, which he struggled with when he came to the UK. He has said that he is the product of both schools - and let’s face it, he is a wonderful credit to them both. I have huge respect for Russian training and ballet, but the idea that only Russians can teach ballet to a high standard is untrue and outdated these days, although it may well have been the case in the past. If RB training were so inferior to his Russian training, then his technique would have slid over the years and he would not now be regarded as one of the finest classical dancers in the world.

The clownery of this comment...Muntagirov and Osipova are literally the only russians in the company, but go off I guess.

Limited programme in Russia, no close connection with other stylistics as with Ashton, MacMillan , Wheeldon, McGregor et al. It's why other Russians claim to have come to London, a broader, more flexible experience. Their choices.

For those who are curious it would be interesting to know that Vadim Mutagirov is an ethnic Tatar. Tatars are a tiny Muslim (but mostly secular) minority in Russia. Most Tatars live in Tatarstan and nearby regions including Chelyabinsk. Just a bit of trivia for those who would like to know more about him.

@@m.h.6499 Two of my favorite ballet dancers are Nureyev and Mukhamedov. I know that they are both Tatars. But I’ve never heard Vadim mention that he was.
@SilhouetteSE
@SilhouetteSE Год назад
Well, I wouldn't call it "tiny." In fact, at almost 5.5 mln (4% of total population), Tartars are the largest ethnic minority group in Russia. Outside of Tatarstan, they live in Siberia, on the Volga, in the Urals Region, and in the Far East. Btw, it tajes about 13 hrs to drive from Chelyabinsk to Tatarstan, so they are not geographically close.

This interview fits with how he comes across on stage. Committed, humble and giving of all. For me he has the excitement and flair of Nureyev coupled with outstanding technique and I get the sense he tries to get the best from his partner as well as himself. I have really enjoyed listening to him and excited to see him live in Swan Lake next year.

Congratulations to Vadim on this award. It is well deserved. Vadim's talent was evident from a young age but in the past few years, I think he has really come into his own as an artist and as a wonderful partner. It is a pleasure to watch him dance in anything he does. You are right to keep challenging yourself as an artist because that is how you grow and refine your skills. It's important to be open to those challenges and you are.
