IT is true that in general today's boys are skinnier and weaker, because of the aesthetic required today for taller, leaner dancers, but the standard of artistry, flow of movement and arms generally today is far superior. And I think today's female graduating students are as good as they ever were. Clearly they use the girls with the best fouettes in this section of the ballet, but to name just one recent graduate, Zhiganshina would have done fouettes just as good as in this section of the video. The girls are not sloppy today, and yes, Skorik and Shapran both have failed on the hops en pointe, but actually so do some other senior ballerinas, and we regularly see quite young children in Vaganova do these perfectly - it is taught early on in the Vaganoa course. I do not believe the standard of students has declined.
