Obstacle clearing: The mantra is said to clear away inner and outer obstacles.
Compassionate wisdom: The mantra is said to evoke Padmasambhava, who represents the mind, and call on the power of compassionate wisdom.
Protection: Sherpas use the mantra for protection from danger, such as falling rocks.
Rebirth: Some say that reciting the mantra 10 million times will result in rebirth in a realm of vidyadharas.
Becoming like Guru Rinpoche: Some say that reciting the mantra 1,200,000 times seven times will result in becoming the same as Guru Rinpoche in this life.
The mantra is "Om Ah Hum Vajra Guru Padma Siddhi Hum".
