Vajrapani & Wrathful Deity Confusions

It is very easy to confuse the deities Vajrapani, Vajravidarana, Sengge Dradog, Mahakala and Yama Dharmaraja. They are all wrathful in appearance, blue in color, one face and two hands, holding either a vajra or curved knife in the upraised right hand. Great care must be taken to see the defining characteristics of each iconographic form as well as observing the overall context of a painting.

Is there any confusion between Vajrapani and Vajragarbha? Is the latter name attested in Tibetan and depicted visually?

At ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ODlBm0CX6Zc.html when you are discussing Vajravidarana and the vishvavajra, is the image displayed of Vajrapani? It appears that he image holds a single vajra aloft in the right hand. Thank you very much. These videos are wonderful!

Yes, that is correct. The example images displayed do not always track with the dialogue. And, the best possible examples are not always chosen due to the sheer number of images. See the Vajravidarana page for specific examples of the iconography: www.himalayanart.org/search/set.cfm?setID=517

Is there a relationship between Vajrapani and Vajragarbha in Tibetan? Is the latter named attested in Tibetan and depicted visually? There is so much overlap between Vajrapani, vajrasattva, etc.

There is no relationship between Vajrapani and Vajragarbha. The latter deity is found as a minor secondary deity in several mandalas of the Yoga Classification. There is no identified art of Vajragarbha.

Vajravidarana: “she” not necessarily “he”

In recent decades some Tibetan teachers explain the Shangpa Kagyu form of Vajravidarana as female. I have not seen the textual references for this.

All these are merely figures used as skillfull means to gain enlightenment. Traditions that obsess too much about art-form or distinguishing deities are very ignorant.
