Every culture has its unique stories and explanations about the origin of life. According to our ancestors' traditions from the Baltic Finns, the world was born from a bird's egg. The "creation songs" in the regivärss style from Estonia, Ingrian, and Karelia likely stem from a common mythological source. According to this, at the very beginning, there is only the sky and an endless primeval ocean, above which the Ilmalind (Sky Bird) seeks a nesting place. Having found a solitary hill, it lays three eggs on it. A gust of wind rolls the eggs into the sea, and from them arise the sky, the land, the sun, the moon, and the stars.

Selle järgi on kõige enne olemas vaid taevas ja lõputu ürgookean, mille kohal Ilmalind omale pesapaika otsib. Leidnud üksiku mätta, muneb ta selle peale kolm muna. Tuuleiil veeretab munad merre ning neist saavad taevas, maa, päike, kuu ja tähed.
