When I got to the end of the level, I was so angry at the commander. Assuming I wouldn't be able to, I ran at him and swung my shovel to pretend to hit him. I expected to just swipe the air. I was completely shocked when the shovel actually connected. The level had successfully guided me into mutiny without giving me any goals. I will never forget this game.
@@wackyotter1235 from what I know the only thing that happens if you don't hit him right there is that he will shove the last few soldiers into the machine gun fire
@@internetstrangerstrangerofweb nope point doesnt stand, there are plenty of animations that are even more horrific than this, just because something is a cartoon doesnt automatically restrict it from being "dark"
General Robert Nivelle claimed that the offensive would accomplish in 48 hours and 10,000 casualties, but in reality, 187,000 casualties for French, 160,000 casualties for British, and 160,000 casualties for German. Moreover, Nivelle Offensive spent 24 days. Why did french soldiers mutiny ? Because their living conditions were "EXTREMELY BAD" and they suffered from the Battle of Verdun (that spent 10 months) and the Battle of Somme. Nivelle Offensive triggered french soldiers. However, when the mutiny had been suppressed, general Philippe Pétain (Lion of Verdun) promised the soldiers for improved their living conditions. French Government rehabilitated the mutineers in 1994. 77 years after the mutiny.
A lot of general at the time dreamed of doing an “all out 1 time knock blow to the enemy to win the war”, it always fails. Especially a lot of the generals failed to properly capitalise on new technology.
He also promised that he'd stopped the offensive if things got too hairy or it failed to achieve it's goals after the first two days. To add insult to injury pretty much every other general, the minister of war and the whole French government were skeptical of the offensive as it was slapped together without and care for the details. Nivelle should've counted his lucky stars the soldiers were still willing to man the trenches and defend their country, in my opinion they should've demanded Nivelle be either court martialed or be stripped of rank.
The mutineers were honestly justified in abandoning their post. The Neville offensive was incredibly ass backwards throwing hoards of men into a literal killing zone with no strategy.
@@iqstrats1250 They have no Choice, They Called Backwards People by the Entire Europe, No Crops, Water, Food, No Weapons, Vehicles, And Armored Vehicles. They Still Use Bi-Plane in Early War. They are Poor People. But this is France, Who Have Everything Except Tactics of War.
I think what really makes this level so impactful is that your character has to use piles of bodies for cover, and then by the end the floor is a literal carpet of even more corpses. It really drives home the brutality of the slaughter - you can only make it because so many others have already fallen.
using bodies as covers had always been a tactic once firearms developed. there's paintings from the napoleonic wars where skirmishers used dead bodies as cover
I kind of knew where this was going at the start, but then it just didn’t stop. The slaughter kept going, and going, and *going* with no sign of slowing down. Every step of the way, there was the officer in the rear. By the time we reached the end, it became incredibly obvious what needed to be done to save ourselves from joining the mountains of corpses surrounding us. At that point, when the officer fired on our own terrified men to keep them moving into death, it became clear who the enemy truly was.
*The painful screams of soldiers dying left and right throughout the field, the piles of dead soldiers who didn't even get to fight the enemy, fellow comrades dying before you, the helpless honorable groups of soldiers who meet their demise while your group lives on, the fact that there's wounded men trapped under the corpses of their fallen brethren, ruthless officers and generals throwing away their soldiers lives for a poorly calculated offensive.* Jesus... It makes tears leak out of my eyes just by seeing this massacre...
I love how during the parts where your fighting the Baron, it feels better. Sure it's still war, but the game uses a brighter color palette, and horrible disaster hasn't struck for the main 4 quite yet. You don't even think how people are still dying, just that you and Freddie are kicking ass. But once the Baron is beaten, it gets more horrific and depraved in the last chapter. Without even telling you, the game shows, primarily most in this level, that the war can't possibly be beaten by beating up some random villain. War is the villain. Fucking amazing storytelling.
Its almost infuriating seeing that commander show up again and again, entirely unscathed, driving you forward with a wave of his sword and pistol after narrowly evading death time and time again as your team slowly thins, as though never even seeing a German. But I suppose that's the point.
Just finished the game This level really made me look at the screen in pure horror for what I was seeing, "no, no this is wrong! This is madness!" I've never seen a game with so many dead bleeding bodies on the ground, and to remember that this actually happened just left me with pure horror. The best game I've ever played
What would one consider a good soldier after all... The person who saves his comrades but fails the mission? Or the one who succeeds the mission, at the cost of many ally lives? Valiant Hearts is an amazing game of how differing human moral is and the terrors of war.
I can't help but feel bad for the little group of Men you take along with you- each one probably just wanting to go back home only to get sent back out there by their officer before getting gunned down again.
Just the coloring of the characters, oh man I love it. The Germans being the faceless enemy that brings death and destruction, the common soldier being grey and worn by the war, and the officer maintaining his clean outfit showing how he isn't the one who is really fighting yet he pushes those who fight into suicidal situations.
I want to thank the creators of this game and Battlefield 1: both devs made those games so realistic, and it showed us just a tiny spec of the horrific nature of the "Great" War. They gave us a form of entertainment, as we tackled the challenges in Valiant Hearts and fought massive operations in BF1, but in the end, the war is just bloody gruesome and pointless to the extent that they shouldn't have been such a sick war. I truly believe in order to achieve peace, we must accept the brutality of the past and make amends to ensure the past doesn't repeat itself
The thing that intrigued me most about the mission was that we were 3-4 meters away from the Germans and that they suddenly appeared to be radiating from the hills, not from the trenches. It confused me.
For all the ppl who support a war or believe than go to a war is the right thing...i will tell them to play this game. I never seen a war as the same after this game. A truly masterpiece
How do you know if you haven't been to war? This is just a game. Go watch all quite on the western front or a very long engagement. As to war? Sometimes you are forced into it by an enemy that attacks you. You defend your family, home, fellow citizens, and country.
I don't know if anyone else noticed, but the Officer pressing the player along reminded me of General Mireau from Paths of Glory. Had both a similar looking scar and a blatant disregard for the lives of his men
Most likely physically injured like losing a leg or limbs or suffering ptsd as they witness hell on earth. Those who survived will have to fight again in 1940
Those intact were interred in cemeteries around the area. Few bodies remained intact, so the majority currently rot in bits and pieces underground after being shredded by continuous artillery.
I was playing Valiant Hearts yesterday with 5 Other people on a 4K tv and i remember how rage inducing this mission was, primarily because how it turns out
This final battle is now showing the realities of war, the dark and dread among the soldiers, Bodies are everywhere, it shows the aftermath of the battle. When the first battle of game, there were only bodies with no arms and legs of the French soldiers, no blood, but in the Nivelle Offensive it have now shown blood around the pile of Corpse
This was called “the war to end all wars” but it ended up creating more wars after it’s over. The worst part is that there has been many opportunities where it could’ve been avoided too.
Another thing I find amazingly haunting. Every other level has some sort of puzzles and enigmas. Not this one. In this one, you just go forward. You watch your allies die and you can only push forwards. You cannot do anything else...
Pretty obvious, you show the soldiers that they have an 80% chance of dying to the enemy machine gun, and a *100% chance of being hunted down and shot or hanged by your own country.* War is hell. And humans are good at doing it.
@@p_filippouz Glory of war is a term usually used in an ironic way to refer to the brutality, or he also probably refers to the glory of Emile doing his best, and sacrificing himself to free his comrades.
Despite the cartoonish appearance and looking like a flash game from the 2000-2010, it actually portrayed war accurately and realistically, and it unironically gave me chills and made me imagine myself in that situation
I'm an idiot. I thought before that I understood. I understand now. This game is fucking masterful. We need every single military commander, to play, and understand this.
I still don't understand one thing, and that is that when I look for how Nivelle died, he tells me in 1924 of cancer and in the game he interprets that he died in the same offensive
They don't want to get shot by the officers or be called a coward and executed. They had a better chance of living if they charged. Even though many died...
Well how else would they get close enough to actually see the enemy? Your entire infantry was just muskateers facing againts the efficiency of early modern weaponry. Replace the gung ho banzai charge with muskateers march and they are practically the same.
It would be nice if instead of killing the general in the game, you could beat the general with the group and throw him under machine gun fire to feed him.
spoil: si vous laissez l'officier continuer de tirer pour faire avancer les soldats, toute l'unité mourra poussée par l'officier français sous les balles allemandes.
During this whole mission, the guy with the bolt cutters couldve been the only one except Emile to survive in the squad. (Im leaving the guy with the glasses up to interpretation, because the player can either save him or let the general push him to machine gun fire.)
