Validating 3 phase roof-top extractor fans

In this video we've been tasked with validating 16 circuits that supply high level extract fans in a distribution warehouse, with the objective of ensuring it was just the fans not working rather then the circuits.
The cables come from a MCC panel before making their way to a roof, we show how we trace and validate stuff like this and also show bit of testing.

Hi Mike, from old spark from the 60's. Another enjoyable video, I'm really envious of your knowledge on these industrial sites, I would have enjoyed working on them today with all the testing, in my day safe isolation was a neon screwdriver, and a wind up Megger for continuity and insulation, Most of my work was live, had no choice you can't close down a factory, just to make sure the connections was dead I used to brush past the cable with the back of my hand to test for tingles before grabbing with uninsulated cutters quite primitive compared today. Really looking forward to next video really good content. Keep up the excellent work. Peter.

nice to see a spark who understands the mechanical side of things. i do hvac and often deal with situations where electricians have done weird stuff because they don't think about what we're actually trying to achieve with their electricity

Pretty interesting design for that panel, incorporating exhaust fans and the fire control systems in the same panel. Unless these fans are just for smoke extraction? Sick video tho mate, you're a legend 👍

Judging by the little flashes each of the panel lights give when you turn the fans off around the 5 minute mark, I wonder if there aren't any flyback diodes on the contactors.

Not hard to guess whose roof you've been on! Jobs like that it's worth carrying a tone generator/tracer, even a cheap one saves faffing around - person on the roof hook the tone on whilst the one down below probes.

@@kellymarieangeljohnson114 he mentioned the general location & then highlighted a couple of landmarks, so with Google Earth it wasn't difficult locate. In this instance it's probably not a big issue, but it is something that should be borne in mind when doing such videos as it's very easy to give away information that shouldn't be public. I'm actually quite surprised that he was given permission to film on this site!

What did the red lamp on each control switch indicate? The green lamp went out when you operated the switch but the ones that were already turned off had a red indicator lamp. I'm guessing that they are some sort of fault indicator.

Question, does the contactor matter in terms or incoming power into the contactor matter? If you made the mistake on wiring incoming power into the T1-3 side of it, will this long term cause damage? In my head it’s just a giant light switch

Whoever build that board make a major mistake by using individual fuses per phase for the motors. As if one those individual fuses blows the motor will be left with only 2 phases feed to it and this will cause the motor to burn out. The fuses should be replace with 3 phase MCB pre motor or best practice with motor starters. This might not be the underline issues with the fan motors, but will one of the major factors casing them to burn out.
@MrWill2knz
@MrWill2knz 3 года назад
what is the kw rating for those motors as 32A fuses seems a bit over the top
@mrfrenzy.
@mrfrenzy. 3 года назад
It looks like there are motor starters built together with the contactors. Probably the red light goes on if a motor starter has tripped.
@MrWill2knz
@MrWill2knz 3 года назад
@@mrfrenzy. Nope, they are just contactors with thermal overload modules. They will be using the auxiliary contacts of the thermal overloads to switch the fault indicator lights on the switch board door if there is a thermal overload. A Motor Starter has both a MCB and thermal overload protection in the same module (Thermal-Magnetic). They can come with a contactor in the same module too or with a manual isolation switch.
