VALIS is a crazy, semi-autobiographical exploration of either a psychotic break suffered by the author in 1974, or contact with God. No one knows for sure, but the results sure make for an interesting book.

Just started reading this one. Phillip k Dick is absolutely amazing. There’s very few authors that can grab my attention from start to finish.

ive experienced very similar experiences. what others call supernatural event. I've lived, experienced, and collected evidence of these occurrences as much as possible. Literally had a Bruce almighty experience. Tho this is just 1 realm of realty among several. I've seen fairies, teleported, read peoples life that I've never met, etc. the list goes on. I'd say that im crazy, but several friends and family have experienced this along with me. Sadly, most keep their distance afterwards.

A Maze Of Death... I would LOVE a review of it from you. Hearing you talk about PKD is so nice and wonderful. Great to hear him from a fan. Can't wait for more!

Read PKD's Exegesis prior to VALIS and it helped a lot to know VALIS' reference text.

It touches on some extremely esoteric philosophies. I was blown away reading this book. Having a basic understanding of these are essential to appreciating this book

Ask the novel to let it read you again and see what you make of it after it has had another go at you. This is my favorite novel of all time and it has read me multiple times. And each time it seems like a different book to me. Like a person, sometimes it emphasizes different parts of its personality over others. There are some other books and movies that have this effect on me but VALIS is number one in my heart.

Worth reading The Divine Invasion and Transmigration of Timothy Archer as they make the Valis "trilogy" if you enjoyed Valis they make the ride even better 😀

I've never read anything by Philip K. Dick but it sounds like I would like his work. I don't know if you've ever read any Boris Vian and in case you haven't, you might enjoy his writings.

Contact with God = mental breakdown. The illusory mental platform must dissolve before the Divine shines through.

Philip K. Dick was our era’s William Blake.

Right you are about the name. Philip means "lover of horses" in greek. And dick means thick or fat. Anyhoo, thank you for this rare VALIS analysis

Its worth noting he did a lot of amphetamines which helped him write a lot. I didn’t know he wrote it in 2 weeks but it makes sense if he was high on speed! I liked valis first half. The second half was just some sort of hippy setting and it just killed how deep the first half was. When I was reading the first half I was legit scared of the possibility of there being metaphysical beings and his analogy to camouflage was really good imo

Another thing I wanted to say is you should definitely check out this interview with philosopher Reza Jorjani. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NO8pLlbCr6I.html In the last quarter of the video he talks about Philip K Dick, and how Dick was deeply gnostic. Moreover, he talks about how other novels of PKD were actually dreams of PKD (specifically, Flow My Tears the Policeman Said) and how he believed some gods were influencing our world in order to cure it of evil.

Its nothing to do with drugs. Its to do with the affect of gnostic teachings of Hermes Trismegistus on the human mind. Try it yourself. Read the corpus hermeticum and see what you make of it. Good luck.

@@Chinnnnuz I agree with you. I was just saying he wrote it so quickly because he was high on speed.

Oh man I found this book a real chore to read and didn't finish it. I'm glad you liked it and appreciated it. I will admit the very beginning of the book caught my interest with the pink light experience, but he lost me the moment it stopped being a story and started being a lecture on mysticism. A rambling and unfocused lecture at that. The same thing happened with Streiber's Communion, a book that's about 1/4 autobiographical tale of a supernatural encounter, and about 3/4 long unbearable ramblings theorizing about it to no certain conclusion.

I totally understand that reaction. I think I found it refreshing as it was so personal, while most of Dick’s books are really abstract and intellectual, so I appreciated the change.

Bought this 4 years ago in London to get a taste of Philip K Dick. Very poor choice (as I later found out). To this day it's the only book I dropped off.

I don’t understand how you can review a single PKD novel I’ve read all his novels and many of his short stories (given that it is hard to identify all his short stories). VALIS is just a chapter in the PKD compendium. (I am rereading Ubik at the moment, which is in the same American Library volume as “Man in a High Castle,” which became a TV series (on Amazon Prime) and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (which become “Blade Runner,” which you might have mentioned if you had read it. All of these stories are interconnected and connected with his life in California. I’d suggest redoing this review after you have read more than 3 or 4 of his novels. You are still a novice!

I don’t claim to be an expert! I’ve read only a few of his novels (and all his short stories). I read this one and liked it, so I thought I would talk about it, which is what I do on this channel: talk about books I read. I’m sure I’ll have more to say after I read more, but this was never intended to be the definitive guide to Philip K. Dick.

VALIS is hard to read. Dick is a terrible stylist, to begin with. I don't mean to denigrate Dick''s work; I agree he was (or had) a genius. I have really enjoyed many of his books. But when he starts talking about himself; well, much of what has happened to him has happened to many people on hallucinogens. I speak from experience. His is not gibberish or nonsense. I reread some Dick recently fifteen years after my first immersion in his books and found his hacky style almost unbearable.
@rafetizer
@rafetizer 3 года назад
@@54MDigital_Media He's saying this is no different from any other "far out" stuff people have experienced on hallucinogens. Sounds great at the time, then doesn't make any real sense later, once you've come down. The problem here is that to accept the claims of VALIS, you have to accept a whole cavalcade of extraordinary claims, most of which don't make a lick of sense. The bulk of the story is just him redefining words to fit his narrative. It makes no sense, and is obviously just wild speculation. (regardless of how much thought he's put into this) No offense meant whatsoever, the guy has written some absolutely phenomenal works! This book in particular, though, comes across just like the infamous Uri Gellar, peddling magic tricks as being real supernatural forces.
