CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Stauffenberg (Tom Cruise) plants the bomb in the same room as Hitler (David Bamber), and exits in time to watch it explode.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
At the absolute height of World War II, German generals hatch a daring plan to assassinate Adolf Hitler and effectively render the German war machine impotent. Directed by Bryan Singer, Valkyrie stars Tom Cruise as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, the real-life mastermind behind the elaborate plot known as Project Valkyrie: a plan to assassinate Hitler and overthrow his government from the inside. Stauffenberg has been a loyal soldier and an asset to the Reich for his entire military career, but after losing an eye, a hand, and three fingers in an Allied bombing, he reaches a breaking point. The destructive madness that his country is unleashing on the world has become too terrible for the colonel to stand silent. He joins the resistance movement -- a treasonous act, punishable by death -- and risks his life and the life of his family for the chance to change history. Comprised of high-ranking officials working in secret, the German Resistance has access to the inner workings of the government and military, putting them in the perfect position to dispatch the dictator and then use his own official contingency plan to seize power -

Hitler had a lot of strange coincidences on his side on that day that saved his life: 1) Colonel Stauffenberg took not one, but TWO bombs with him on that day. But due to his handicap (one eye and no right hand), he had trouble arming them both in time for the meeting. But he didn't think much of it because he expected one bomb to be more than enough as the meeting was taking place in Hitler's underground concrete bunker. 2) Due to it being an unusually hot day, the meeting was moved from the underground bunker (which had no windows and thus no way for blast force to escape) to the wooden cabin with several windows which were open. It drastically reduced the effectiveness of the plastic explosive that Colonel had brought. 3) Stauffenberg had left the briefcase right beside Hitler's foot to maximize the damage. But moments before the bomb went off, Hitler had asked one of his aides to move Stauffenberg's briefcase on the opposite side of the table because it interfered with his foot. This reduced the the amount of damage the bomb could inflict on Hitler even further. 4) The table was a heavy oak wood table. At the time of the blast, Hitler was almost completely leaning on top of it. The sturdy construction of the table top shielded him from the blast, only delivering a few facial injuries and to his legs from splinters and fragments of the table. Even if he had survived, Operation Valkyrie may have succeeded. But the blast interfered with the phone lines so the news of assassination (or potential assassination) did no reach Berlin in time, and the conspirators delayed their actions, allowing Hitler's inner circle to regroup and turn the tide. Had one of those things gone differently, we are talking about history in a completely different way. But like Beck had said "This is a military operation, nothing ever goes according to plan." Sigh.

Col. Brandt knocked the briefcase over twice. It was in his way, that's why he moved it. Had both explosive charges gone off as was originally planned then Hitler most shuredly wouldn't have survived. Instead, all he got were some minor cuts and burns, a badly sprained right wrist and a blown ear drum.
@JustHereForTheDialogue
@JustHereForTheDialogue 2 года назад
@@beachbunny8021 I mean it’s probably a bit of creative license there. There doesn’t seem to be any evidence past circumstantial that the bag was ever moved. It’s just a theory. Some say this guy moved it. Some say hitler moved it. Some say hitler had someone else move it. Like no one even knows if it was actually moved. I suspect he only lived because they changed the meeting place to an area where the bomb was less effective.
@davidarango4679
@davidarango4679 2 года назад
@@JustHereForTheDialogue the Gestapo conducted a thorough investigation. They questioned everyone that survived and that attended the briefing that day. It was Col. Brandt who knocked over the briefcase twice. It was in his way so he picked it up and moved it. He was standing next to Col. Staufenberg that day at the table. Once Staufenberg left the room to take that bogus phone call, Brandt moved down into the space that was occupied by Staufenberg. That's when he first knocked over the briefcase then later moved it to the other side of the table leg. As Col. Staufenberg was leaving the wolf's lare that day he ditched the second explosive charge on the road side, and that's where the Gestapo later found it. When it was all over some 2000 people were executed in connection with the assassination attempt.

@@sertu1462 There is a gigantic difference between anti Jewish sentiments and "let’s kill all Jews living in Europe in an organized industrial mass genocide" The military was not as fanatical as Hitler in that regard. There are good answers to why some of the Nzi forces sectors like the SS or the occupational police are to this day far more notorious than many others in the public memory. While the Wehrmacht certainly had its fair share of the usual war crimes involved with major conflicts and was occasionally involved with the genocide, often in the former regard very much like the Red army, the genocide was on another level than some units destroying a few villages and when you run the numbers, you realize that there aren’t too many people needed to create a lot of horror. I really like how you can see each person giving very subtle cues to basically "keep track" of either the timer of the bomb or per stage of the bomb. (I say that because I originally thought the bomb was primed initially, then had a reed switch to arm/start timer. So when knocked it would start the point of no return stage... When he hesitated to take his hat he was acknowledging that was the final cue and was scared.)

true but on other hand you can look it from different perspective...Hitler had to witness Third Reich and Nazism crumble to dust completely. So in a way he suffered more from that and from betrayal of Göring and Himmler in the end....and he was completely broken man by the end of it all. That being said, so many millions of lives might have been spared if only even this last assassination attempt had been succesfull

I could be mistaken, but as far as I know plastic explosive is incredibly stable. I believe you need to use a specific detonation device to make it go off, not sure a proximity explosion would do it. Again could be wrong though as I know there’s such a thing as proxy detonations.

Been a while since I saw the entire film, but I don’t think the conspirators considered how conspicuous it would look to leave so abruptly. Stauffenberg was already hustling to his car before the bomb went off. It was also highly unusual for a ranking officer to forget his headgear and be seen walking outdoors without it. That sort of detail is exactly what aides are used for, to keep their boss out of trouble. Too bad the innocent getaway driver and checkpoint guards got pulled into the deception unknowingly, and surely suffered Hitler’s wrath as a result.

I doubt it would’ve made any difference, Hitler was largely shielded from the blast by a thick oak table.
