The very first plant was built for Metsä Group’s Äänekoski Bioproduct mill in 2016. Valmet’s team developed the solution to meet and tackle the customer’s emission challenge - all within the normal project schedule.
The Sulfuric Acid Plant is independent, complementary and does not interfere with the mill’s other processes.
With the Sulfuric Acid Plant, Metsä Group’s Bioproduct mill has been able to drastically decrease emissions and cut costs at the same time. The plant reduces emissions to both soil and water and eliminates carbon emissions from the transportation of externally purchased acid. In-house production enhances the mill’s chemical balance in an environmentally friendly way, reducing the need for make-up chemicals. In any pulp mill, potential savings can reach up to 7,5 euros/ADT - or hundreds of truckloads of acid per year.
