Great summary ! ...a few more points.. Valpys money came from a PENSION from the "Honerablr East India Company" rep[uted to be 1..2 thousand pounds a year! he spent it on the developing town but when he died it STOPPED! .He took his family & a few friends on the fashionable "GRAND TOUR " of Europe italy etc. He hired the "AJAX" ship & actually broughr=t a cow for children milk on the ship! when they landed in Dunedin the cow promptly ate TUTU (toot)poisonous weed & DIED ..BUGGER!...With 4 daughters (1 married with a family stayed in England& all died of cholera) two married in dunedin a couple of days before he died & the son when thrown off a horse at Herbert got an screwdriver in his neck! took a leat recovering but was lifelong affected. He (the "Judge" ) was very public spirited bringing a flour mill & Sawmill on the ship (1848 ). sadly his early death slowed city development ...think what may have happened if he had chosen NELSON !
Yes, I too would like to know why Valpy decided to immigrate. Perhaps he longed for adventure, but in a climate that he thought was better suited to his health than India had been.
