Thanks for the comprehensive breakdown on this process, helps me understand my bike better and why a valve adjustment cost as much as it does.

OC - have done valve inspection on a few cars, not bikes. Some pushrod engines have a screw adjuster and a nut.. so you can just change the adjustment easily (no shims needed!). I still learned something here though, thank you 👍
@tpelle2
@tpelle2 2 года назад
Some MOTORCYCLES have set screw and locknut adjusters. I know the Suzuki GSX250R does, and also the Royal Enfield 650 twins do, just for a couple of current examples. Maybe others. Honestly, shim under bucket valve settings is really race engine stuff, and if you want a "utility" motorcycle - one that you are going to use as a commuter, or maybe your sole means of transport, or maybe even a bike that you are going to use for touring internationally, you really don't need or want shim under bucket valve adjustments. Set screw and locknut valve settings are easy-peasy, and can be done quickly even be done in the back yard by the owner - without danger of the cams getting out of time with the crank and having a valve punch through the top of a piston.

Something I love is that Brian is insanely knowledgeable and he's going out of his way to make sure not only that everything is well done but also that everything is well explained and understood... As a tech i highly appreciate this because it can also make my job easier when I'm dealing with costumers. It's also nice knowing that at the end of this more people who are simply interested will have learned alot and that alone is great! Good job to the whole team! Love the bikes and love the vids guys!

I always do valves in mm, it's just significantly more precise, i know it's a range but a 0.006 inch is 0.154mm whereas 0.005 is 0.127, if your range is like 0.14 -0.22 and you can't fit the 0.006 in there but you can the 0.005 you could easily be changing a shim for no reason, or the reverse on the top end of the spec, not change a shim that's out of spec.

I do adjust my own valves as well and just thought I'd throw this out there about valves I've come to understand. In a well maintained engine you don't generally have wear that makes your gap larger... Valves tend to stretch so the gap "usually" gets smaller over time which is exactly what your video shows. And as you said about the tighter your gap the more the valve opens is true it also means the longer the valve stays open which also means loss of compression and eventually burnt valves if the gap gets too tight or none existent... So I'm glad you mentioned setting them in the middle of the range because I used to lean towards the tighter end of the range until I someone showed me I was robing my bike of compression and actually loading power

I'm already a certified tech, but I started watching before I joined MMI and learned everything Brian knows(sans experience in the field, Brian could still mechanic circles around me), but it's still a great refresher and watching Chase mess up while he's learning is what im really here for. That, and I just love working on bikes and watching bikes get worked on. Especially with bikes and parts I could never afford.

Full four-part tutorial on my channel for those interested. Every single step, following along with the factory service manual, from start to finish.

as a mechanic, done many a valve inspection, adjustement and replacement. from the bucket type to the type that has a screw and locknut on a rocker arm like older bmw boxer twins. those are fun to work on, since the cilinder heads stick out the side of the bike

OC: I'm a small engine mechanic (chainsaws, lawnmowers, tractors, etc) so I've done plenty of inspections/ adjustments on those, but its a lot simpler, just requires the turning of a nut/bolt, no replacing or removing parts needed. I'm planning on giving my bike (2009 GSX-R 600) an inspection/ adjustment in the spring so wish me luck on that haha.

I’ve done a valve inspection 3 times on my R1200GS. Almost the easiest bike to do because of accessibility to the heads. 2 times had to adjust, and did those myself as well. Bought the shim kit and swapped shims myself. I was nervous about it the first time, but this bike is cake (and pretty difficult to screw up if you have to make an adjustment).

Yamaha is nice where every 26k is the required inspection intervals whereas Honda and the other's are around 16k give or take. Basically that engine should be on it's second inspection and unless raced your specs seem just about right on a street engine for those miles. I do mine in the bike but with that many miles and the engine out I'd look at replacing valves, seats and hardware. Also, when properly adjusted your engine should sound a bit ticker. Hard starts on an hot engine north of 20k is usually always valves. Great tutorial guys.

Unexpectedly one of my fave wbr videos ever. Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki run 7.48mm shims can buy them in 0.05 and 0.04mm multiples here (New Zealand) rather than half mm so assume is same everywhere. Yamaha and most of the dirt bikes across all brands run 9.48mm I think. Could be wrong. Jumping between imperial and metric is a bit of a head f!

OC! Brian mentioned a valve adjustment would be a different cost than inspection. Which makes sense is a screw type adjustment cheaper than a shim under bucket though? Can he give a brief overview of why we go to shim under bucket now?
@joonya4427
@joonya4427 3 года назад
Shim and bucket hold their adjustment a lot better. My current FZS1000 (2005) has shim and bucket and has checks done every 42000km. Usually only needs any adjustments done every second check. My old 750 Katana (1985) had screw and lock-nut, and had to be checked every 5000km. Needed adjustments done every single check. Plus with cam-shaft acting directly on the bucket, there are less moving parts, and valve opening is more accurate. Screw and lock-nut generally require a rocker arm.
